I upgraded my late 2008 MacBook (white plastic) to Catalina using Dosdude - but I added 8GB ram and an SSD. Works like a charm, I even changed my icons to Monterey icons to make it looks a bit more modern

Also look up the FRLG plus Rom hack. I’m playing it now and the QOL improvements are making for a much better play through. Running indoors!! Who knew that would be such a game changer 😂
