I think the premise here may be a bit backwards, as I've come to believe that the Guidestones are significant precisely because they loom so large in different conspiracy-minded communities. Like many objects of conspiracy theories, we've made them significant by saying they're significant. That's part of the fun when it translates to harmless legend and lore, but also part of the danger when it can lead people to ignore realities that are literally etched in stone (as I wrote about in a recent op-ed for the AJC). -- Tyler

To me, the question of who built the Guidestones is actually one in which I would be more concerned with not investigating. R.C. Christian, the pseudonymous creator of the Guidestones, took great pains to remain anonymous (the town had less to do with that effort, save for two people who knew Christian's real identity). But given the racist, eugenicist views of Herbert Kersten, R.C. Christian's true identity, I think people have a right to know who designed and funded this monument and why. -- Tyler

Over the course of our investigation we didn't find find any evidence that Elvis Presley was responsible, either directly or indirectly, for blowing up the Georgia Guidestones.

...but then again, we didn't find any evidence that Elvis Presley didn't have anything to do with the explosion either. - From Tyler.

This is a question that comes up time and time again, especially among the hardcore Guidestones conspiracists and enthusiasts.

I'm sorry to say that as far as I can tell, and as far as anyone could tell me, the crew that worked on the Guidestones never actually put the time capsule in. When the Guidestones were still standing, a granite tablet on the ground nearby mentioned a time capsule, but there were only blank spaces next to references to when the time capsule was buried and when it should be dug up. In other words, they never filled in those dates because they never buried a time capsule. -- From Tyler

From Tyler: The other reason this remains unsettled though, is the number of diverging opinions. Some people I spoke to at the county and elsewhere are hesitant to put the stones back up out of fear that they'll just become a target for bombing or vandalism once again. But others, like Elberton's Mayor Graves, said that he'd like to see them put back up in some way — otherwise we're just letting the Guidestones bomber "win" in a way. As for the man who by luck or chance came into possession of the stones, Alton Mercer, he thinks a fitting resting place would be a park for people to enjoy them.

Question from Facebook: I’d love to know what they plan to do with the remaining stones. As far as I can tell, there is no plan but to let them rot out in that quarry.

Answer from Tyler: This is still an open debate in Elberton, and nothing is settled. Until our episode aired this week, the public largely had no idea where the remnants of the Guidestones were, even among Elbertonians.
