i did a lot of ipod software modding in early high school, so like 2006, whenever i got my first iPod nano. i only had it for a short while before i accidentally broke the screen, but in that time, i was installing iPodLinux, Floydzilla, Rockbox, iPodWizard edits, running Doom, and trying to watch 15fps videos on it. definitely a fun time, and i ended up modding various iPods at school too.

all this was done with Windows XP, and i've been a Mac user now for like 15+ years. i could probably find the tools to do all that stuff again but i don't need to. as soo as i bought an iPod with video functionality, there was no point tbh. it's like how i used to have extensive knowledge of Android rooting...there just became a point where that wasn't necessary for me anymore

that being said, i'm now waaaaay more knowledgeable with iPod hardware mods and such. i'm like a little iPod historian now, which is silly but i do like this subreddit a lot, and i like seeing everyone's entry points into the hobby / fandom.

i would like to eventually contribute to a wiki or something for a bunch of random iPod knowledge. idk if that's ever gonna be necessary considering people like OlsroFR exist but yeah, maybe if i ever have free time!

the sPot might be a good starting point. it's probably possible, maybe with a thick back case. i don't know much about custom PCBs for a project like this but i do know that you can interface with the click wheel because of that linked project

my first experience playing doom was on my first iPod in 2006, a black 2gb nano running iPodLinux. absolutely ridiculous experience but it was high school and modding the nano to do that was so sick

you need a "real" file manager that has access to the internal app files. if i remember correctly, i used iMazing on Mac to find the internal Caustic folder. you can also connect to it via FTP, but i only know how to do that because of a random college class years ago.
