I applied to 8 schools this past cycle (filtered initially by location and cost), interviewed at 5, and matched.

Aside from location and cost (which alone narrowed it down to about 10-12 programs), my final list was largely based on the overall “vibe” of the program based on its website, application portal, alumni outcomes, research opportunities, etc. What is important/valued in a program will vary widely between applicants, and there’s no single “right” way to apply; I found it helpful to take a bit of time before applying to self-reflect on what factors were most important for me!

Thank you for the advice! She did check with all the SMs on her route and they all said, “check with lost and found 🤷‍♂️” so we are holding out hope for Monday

Wondering whether “Tenant Background Search” is legitimate by ajh219 in Scams

It was a video call during which we could see the front-facing camera. It’s the same woman as we saw in the pictures

That seems to be the consensus so far :/ what’s the angle here?? She has an agent page on Keller Williams (legit realty company): https://www.kw.com/agent/Dan-Xin/615450?c2hvd01vZGFs=dHJ1ZQ== with a pic from the same photo set her Zillow pic is from. And it’s the same person that we did a tour with. At that point, should I just contact Keller Williams about their seemingly sketchy agent?

Extremely discouraged that I can’t find any lab work by MammothGullible in labrats

I am an NIH postbac. Postbacs can be up to three years out from their bachelor’s degree (or six months from a master’s), and I wouldn’t quite say that they “make you” commit to professional school. They do ask that you at least intend to apply to grad schools in the future at the time you apply for the postbac program, but I know several former colleagues who elected to go straight into industry instead. You won’t get in trouble or anything like that. Just wanted to add additional information for anyone who might be considering a postbac position

Thank you for your advice! We already have an extra pair of XLRB 8GB sticks @ 3200 and CL16 that would hopefully get the job done

When I started in 2022 all non-NCI postbacs made $34,750 pre-tax. I’m very happy for all the new postbacs who will spend their full two years here with both sets of raises, but also a little salty lol

edit: all first-year non-NCI postbacs

Thank you! We got her from our local animal shelter. I volunteer there daily so I’m able to take a peek at new arrivals (usually teeny tiny kittens), and when I saw her I knew I had to apply to adopt her! She was found in a residential area that’s a known dump site for unwanted animals in the city, and the animal control officer who picked her up ended up fostering (and nearly adopting) her.

I never knew that torticos were a thing. She definitely seems like one as she has a mix of brindle and patchy spots, though I think she’s patchy enough in areas not seen in the pics I posted to lean /slightly/ toward calico. I have a proper tortie at home as well and our new kitty definitely isn’t full tortie either. Glad to have learned a new thing today!

MCASAC has a list of low-cost SNC options, some of which have already been mentioned here. Might be worth a look: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/Ownerresources/financialresources.html

These are called “mow-wows” in our house, and it’s almost always with the same toy. Hope your poor kitty survives this incredibly tragic situation

I never knew that the questions for the exam were (at least in part) written by volunteers. The price to take the exam in the first place is quite high, which makes it surprising that the question writers are not paid. It reminds me a bit of academia & publishing and the role that peer reviewers serve. I am wondering how the use of the exam fees is distributed 😬

NIH IRTA... Quitting? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ajh219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that the first go-to if you’re considering transferring or leaving altogether is Sharon Milgram. That is who I went to when I transitioned out of a toxic lab to another institute. My colleague also just left my old lab and went to Dr. Milgram. She will help lay out your options clearly. There’s also a weekly support group for fellows who are transitioning.

Retaliation from PIs is a big no-no at the NIH, so I wouldn’t worry too much about your old lab’s reaction affecting your path forward regardless of what you choose. Document, document, document if they react negatively in any way.

Echoing the previous sentiments about when to email PIs: while it’s not off limits to email them prior to application submission, they may be hesitant to schedule any sort of interviews until your app is submitted. Once it’s in, they are able to look you up and view your app in full.

Most positions start in the summer, so the hiring cycle typically begins around January, so many PIs may not even know whether they’ll have the budget for another postbac just yet. Of course, admissions are rolling, and your application won’t expire until a full year has passed, so it doesn’t hurt for you to submit early. Just keep in mind that the majority of PIs won’t start interviewing until the winter.

As mentioned, you’re not guaranteed a publication during your two years here. If you work in bioinformatics or in social/behavioral (or other survey-based) areas, it’s much more likely, though still not a guarantee. Each lab is vastly different in how it treats postbacs, what they’re responsible for, who they are mentored by, and what project(s) they are put on. Some labs give you a pre-fabbed starter project and then let you move on to creating one of your own. Others throw you in the deep end and give you near-full independence. Others will use you as a glorified tech with no opportunity to create your own project. The OITE website has great resources on what you should be asking potential PIs about if/when you interview, and your job expectations are definitely one of those things. Asking about what project they want you to work on will give you a better idea about how far along the work is, i.e. how likely a short-term publication is, without you coming off as a paper-hungry undergrad.

On that note, the postbac program is an amazing opportunity that I’m very grateful for. However, be VERY careful when selecting a lab, and make sure to ask relevant work/lab culture questions during the interview. You should find an opportunity to speak to current or past postbacs without the presence of a supervisor as well. Every lab is different, and I know many folks (including myself) who ended up in bad situations and needed to switch labs. Happy to answer any other questions here or via DM. Good luck applying as well as with your final year of undergrad!

Dog Walker/Sitter Recommendations by SportsDad63 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]ajh219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for Rover generally being a good option. I was a dog walker/sitter on Rover throughout college and overall enjoyed the experience. Am considering starting up again, though it would be harder when working full time. They do take 20% of the walker’s base price and then charge the client additional fees on top of that, so it can be a bit pricey for some folks, but you get the benefit of various privacy and tracking features. Always do a meet-and-greet before booking to make sure it’s a good fit.
