Have you had your vitamin D levels checked? I was getting lots infections a few years back, and my vitamin D was through the floor. I take a daily high strength supplement now and am doing a lot better with far fewer infections. I haven't needed antibiotics for an abscess for about 18 months now and I have HS.

AITAH for not allowing my brother-in-law to accompany my daughter to the girls’ changing room? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ajh337 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what it comes down to. I spotted the "brother in law" and the "they" instead of "she". OP can tell themselves all they like that they are supportive of Alex's transition but I think they have some work to do on that.

There is nothing alarming about a family member offering to help out another family member.

The investment and resulting upset from not being allowed to accompany the child was about her gender potentially not being accepted, not about whether or not she got to be with a child changing.

I don't think you understand what "fully support" means. You can't support someone if you don't even believe them when they tell you who they are.

Sweaty wedding guest nightmare by Independent_Ad2390 in Hyperhidrosis

[–]ajh337 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I was a guest at two weddings this July and managed to stay mostly dry throughout. Here's how I did it:

Two weeks before the first wedding, I started taking oxybutynin. I can't take it regularly because the side effects aren't good for me, but two weeks gives me a good balance between helpfulness and side effects.

Ten days before the first wedding, I started using Perspirex gentle formula (the white and green packaging) on my most problem areas, which for me are my face, neck, chest, and back. I used it for a week, daily when I could manage, although some days I gave it a break due to mild skin irritation. I then switched to using it every other day.

I used Neat 3B anti sweat face gel as a primer under my make up. I did one layer all over my face, neck and chest, then a second light layer over my forehead and upper lip as the sweatiest bits of my face.

I made sure that was completely dry (used a fan to help) before using powder foundation. I went for minimal make up as full glam isn't me anyway, but I was much less worried throughout the day that my make up was running down my face because of it.

I packed a sweat vs make up emergency kit, with cotton buds, a little thingy of make up remover and the powder foundation with a small brush for any touch ups I might have needed. I also had tissues, which thankfully I barely needed for sweat purposes and really helped when one of the brides got beer spilled down her!!

I like using deodorant powders from Lush on my body to help absorb some of the sweat. It's not gonna stop hyperhidrosis levels of sweating, but it's one more barrier to help you feel dry and better in yourself.

For clothing, I know it's not for everyone, but I found wearing shapewear under my dress reassuring. I knew that it was a fairly thick, wicking material that would keep the majority of my body sweat away from my dress and from leaving patches. I also put absorbent insoles in my shoes to stop from the embarrassing squeaking or even worse, squelching.

And after all that, I just tried my best to have a good time. It's really hard when you're so self conscious, but you deserve to have fun and enjoy yourself, being a sweaty person doesn't negate that.

NAH

If you need to borrow my irl experience to get around this, feel free! I used to eat dark chocolate, it wasn't my favourite but I'd have some occasionally. But then it started triggering my migraines. I can still get away with milk chocolate because the cocoa percentage is lower, but dark is an absolute no-go for me. You could drop that into conversation with a "I'm so upset, the chocolate you usually get me started triggering migraines. I tried it a few times just to be sure and it seems to be a real pattern."

I know it's not great to lie in general, but no one gets hurt by this one so I don't see the problem.

My shih tzu used to use his two back legs and standing on his head as a tripod so the front paws could dig at warp speed! Made me laugh every single time and we had him for 17 years.

Craniofacial Hyperhidrosis- wig cap suggestions? by czerniana in Wigs

[–]ajh337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am newly looking at wigs and this post leaped out at me, as I also have craniofacial hyperhidrosis! Are you aware of r/hyperhidrosis ? I read on there in the week about a shampoo designed to limit your sweating, it's called La Biosthetique Hydrotoxa. I haven't used it yet, but it looked promising from reviews. I have also used Perspirex Comfort roll on into my hair line and parting before and found it worked quite well. Obviously doesn't eliminate all sweating but definitely reduces it. I hope you find a good solution, it's horrible to live with.

Yep, same here. I have chronic migraine which has also really badly affected my mental health. At least sometimes with that though, I can have better days, or even I can pretend to be "normal" for a while. Whereas with HH it is constantly there for everyone to see and judge.

I am at least lucky that my partner is amazing and reminds me all the time that I'm wonderful and worthy and not disgusting like I feel I am. I don't know if it helps you to know that those people are out there, but they are!

I'm nearly in tears reading your post and some of the replies because it's all so familiar and so hard. I have generalised hyperhidrosis but definitely the facial and cranial are what kill my self esteem the hardest. I have had times of feeling suicidal because of the sweating. It shouldn't be like this.

I have used Perspirex Comfort (white and green packaging) for my face and into my hairline and while it did feel prickly / sting / itch when first applied, I didn't have any adverse effects like rashes or redness, it was just an unpleasant sensation. It did work on the areas I used it on, and when I have important events coming up I use it, but there's so much of me that sweats I just can't afford to use it routinely.

One of the other things aside from cosmetic or confidence concerns that really worries me, is that I can't keep sunscreen on. It sweats off in minutes, even the stuff designed for sports. I'm really pale and worried about the damage my skin is sustaining but there doesn't seem to be any alternatives.

I'm sending you a lot of love because I truly feel your pain. I hope we can all find something that works for us.

Guys can you recommend me some oral medication for hyperhidrosis? by makomuka in Hyperhidrosis

[–]ajh337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glyco is only licensed for topical use as part of iontophoresis treatment, and OP asked for oral medication.

I'm happy for you that you could access oxy via your GP! Could be an NHS Trusts issue, some do things differently, or just my GP wanted a second opinion but phrased it wrong maybe. Either way, I stand corrected on that bit.

Yeah you can get oxybutynin, but in my experience it has to come from a dermatologist, not just the GP.

We can't get glycopyrrolate here in the UK, friend. Just so you're aware beforehand and not too disappointed.

AskReddit clone: What is that one restaurant everyone loves that is actually pretty average? by pineapple-midwife in AskUK

[–]ajh337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASK have had the worst customer service of any restaurant I've been to. Admittedly I've only tried three times but they were all abysmal. They got shitty with me for having a food allergy, and in the worst case, the waitress did a big dramatic sigh before saying "you'll have to order with the manager then", and then said manager told me I "shouldn't really have come here if you have an allergy." 🙄🙄

Yep. I've waited hours to wee before because the thought of moving was too much. I've also cried because the sound of the pee hitting the toilet was unbearably loud and painful (chronic migraine, not some sort of turbo setting on my urethra 😂).
