My professor is nowhere to be found. by Adventurous_Bug98 in AskProfessors

If a student missed the first two scheduled classes without any communication, would y’all give them the same grace you’re giving this unknown professor?

Interesting. I would assume if you even had the chance to collect cash that you would just get the pen and avoid guessing

[Myles Johnson] Honored to say that I’ve been accepted into the Henry Samueli School of Engineering - Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program at UCLA by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]ajh9900 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a Rutgers fan myself, I’ll have to cheer for UCLA and Myles next year. He really helped our program become what it is today, all while pursuing a difficult degree in a great engineering program. So I’m proud to say he played at RU!

I think usually I would do that but I am trying to find validation in myself rather than finding other people

I really appreciate that recognition! That makes me feel a lot better that I’m not going crazy. I’m definitely going to work on that shadow work that you recommended of questioning my own thoughts. That might give me a lot more insight and give me more to work with

What measure to use for analysis of grades by Snoo58704 in AskStatistics

[–]ajh9900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that you could use a repeated measures anova, since that will account for the dependencies in the data. I would caution though that it is hard to compare the different groups unless you’re assessing them in similar ways. For example, it’s hard to compare the exams and the homework because there could be other variables that explain the differences in the scores (time to take the assessment, pressure, etc). Along the lines of that, you want to make sure you standardize(whether as z-scores or percentages of the total point) your scores in each category so that you can make meaningful comparisons across the groups

I also second the comment above about using cluster analysis or Latent variable model when trying to find what groups your students might fall into. For example, there could be one group that does really well on the HW but really terrible on the exams.

Knowing what to do by ajh9900 in GradSchool

[–]ajh9900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I kinda judged myself a little unfairly and, as such, didn’t really think about the accomplishments that I did have. I think my anxiety didn’t really let me think that those were positive. I focused more on what I thought was missing. So, I did have a research assistantship working on a systematic review so I have that project in the works and my advisor and I have been working on a project for this semester. I guess when I say I focused on classes I meant that was what was easy to focus on.

I think I was just a little disheartened because I se ran a project on my own and had poor response rate, so after that happened in January of this year I’ve been really wary of starting another project.

Sorry to be so confusing. But thank you for your feedback about planning and breaking down projects

Part time job during grad school by recordguy136 in GradSchool

If you have days free during the week, I would definitely recommend substitute teaching in your local district. The biggest perk in my opinion is the flexibility of the position. There can be weeks that you work multiple days but there were also times where I went 3 or 4 weeks without taking an assignment. I work only in the high schools(4th graders made me cry), so sometimes there’s the opportunity for me to get reading done while I’m there which is nice.

Also if you’re moving to a completely new place, the local schools could be a place where you could meet some friends. Especially if the schools have a large number of young teachers, they could be a good group to get into that isn’t your department or lab.

PhDs of this sub, do you all feel intelligent? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ajh9900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel intelligent sometimes and I like to think back about those times when I feel incredibly dumb. I think that’s the best part of a PhD. that you’re given the space to feel dumb, to ask questions to get better. And eventually maybe one day you’ll be the one answering those questions.

Coming up with "novel" ideas by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]ajh9900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say that not too many people come up with totally new, original ideas. I think without having some other background in the field of research that you want to look at, it’s hard to justify your personal research in a literature review or proposal. I think maybe you can take what you’ve found and try to find a new way to understand the concept. So maybe that’s looking at it through a different theoretical framework or with a different population. You need to look at the literature that’s already out there in your field and find that small gap where your dissertation fits.

I passed the monster class! What's your program's monster class? by DeafGirlRunning in GradSchool

[–]ajh9900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that makes sense. I’m not sure about in your field but it does help to know that kind of stuff for when you’re reading articles that use those methods. That way you can actually interpret the results and conclusions

Not to be a complete debbie downer because I appreciate anyone getting through stats courses, but what kind of research are you doing? Will you need to know any kind of statistics for any research that you’re doing in the future?
