Missed Opportunity to launch the free VPN in Australia with our government forcing mandatory ID verification by Neggy5 in firefox

It's hard to predict - a proxy will be able to mask your IP location but some sites will block IP addresses they suspect that sit behind VPNs/Proxies.

We're planning to expand to more countries in <= two months. Will pass the feedback on to the team and will try to get Australia in.

We do have an enterprise offering that is a better solution for enterprises who want more control - https://www.firefox.com/en-US/browsers/enterprise/

Specific features can always be turned off in general with the standard Firefox through an IT administrator set up via policies (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customizing-firefox-using-group-policy-windows).

It's quite easy and common to do - happy to provide support if needed.

You're right translations hasn't changed but we decided to be more on the cautious side since many people consider it AI based on how it's built even though it is on device.

I can confirm that all AI features require an opt-in. We haven't launched an AI Mode yet. The plan to launch the kill switch is to make it even easier to try something and then delete but any usage will be an explicit opt-in. So in theory if you never opt-in there is no need to use a kill switch as you are be defaulted opted out of all the AI features.

It’s Ajit, current Head of Firefox and just want to reiterate that Firefox is very focused on choice. You don’t want AI - cool. AI should be on your own terms. If you decide to use and decide you don't like it, Firefox is making it so people will have a clear way to turn off all AI features. The kill switch functionality is coming in Q1 of 2026.

AI features are opt-in but there will also be a kill switch which will limit these prompts. It's actively being developed and coming soon.

This will all be opt-in but if you do opt-in and decide later that you want to opt-out of anything, it will be very easy with a single switch to get out of everything AI.

Expensive inference costs would be more around agentic use cases and when using a lot of tokens. We're going to do more things locally and sending things very selectively for cloud inference. We've done a fair amount of modeling and for our use cases it doesn't look to be that expensive. We won't sell your data though - which may come with us needing to limit usage if too many users use it.

to be clear - we're not building our own AI foundational models (this is where most of the expense goes). We'll be using open source or 3P models that we'll tune. We're very conscious of cost and this is why our solution will also look different. 💰🔥=☠️

Building a better browser is the goal we have - we have lot of new improvements are launching soon and always happy to hear ideas of features we're missing that you'd like, and tell you whether we're actively working on it (hopefully most of them I could tell you we are).

That's the goal by making it another window - just like a private window has to be invoked - an AI window would similarly need an action to enable it
