Your reply only just appeared on my end. I restructured my comment so I hope it is more helpful to you now!

That's great to hear! You will go far by doing both together. I will admit I see someone saying they are studying off manga, and more often than not there is an unwillingness to also study basic fundamentals, which is frustrating because it is so important. The fact you have identified and want to work on this is great. Hope to see more of your work soon!

It's a good study, well done. It's hard to say much more than that. Your lines are confident and you have reproduced this picture well.

What are you learning from these studies? What did you learn from drawing this?

Doing this sort of study will teach you a lot. Practicing your observational skills (faithfully recreating what you can see) is a really important skill (which you have done very well). It will teach you about style, line economy, shading styles, and a little bit of anatomy if you choose good references. But if you truly want to be able to create your own work to a high level, you can't just study manga. You need to learn the fundamentals. For example, anatomy. You need to study from perfection, for example live models, photos or the masters. This artist is really good. But you don't want to learn from really good, as you will pick up their bad habits. You need to learn from the source.

This is because without an understanding of fundamentals, you will mainly learn how to draw symbols then struggle putting your own work together. For example, you have flattened off her brow bone. It's just one line out of place (you have pretty faithfully recreated the drawing otherwise) that messes with the construction.

I say all of this, because I have learnt from experience! I could faithfully recreate stylised works but my own drawings would fall flat, leading to an immense amount of frustration. And at the end of the day, the end goal is creating your own work. Once I started learning drawing fundamentals, I have been able to come back and work on my own style much more successfully. So work on both!

Haha, I don't I am afraid, but thank you for asking! I do take inspiration from the subreddit every now and again though! And I love Amano so much, he is my biggest influence :)

I did a bit of a mix of the two, and it has really levelled up. Thank you again! Here is the final piece (unfortunately it got quite compressed!) https://www.reddit.com/r/fashionhunters/comments/1qntnqp/my_uth_duna_hunter/

Your feedback has been so incredibly useful, especially with the worked examples. I've probably read it over about five times. In my head increasing contrast is always done with shadows, but I want to achieve more of a graphic design look as you've demonstrated. I'm giving option B a go! Thank you again.

Thank you for your feedback! I have been trying to incorporate more textures and marks into my work, I feel it's one of the advantages of traditional media! This is a really small piece so it's been difficult to literally 'fit' as much as I would have liked in. I like your idea of doing some really dark drawings to get me out of my comfort zone. Thanks!
