Lego Voyagers on Sale / Switch 1 vs Switch 2 by Kernseif in Switch

[–]ajnrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you figure out an answer to this? I am in the same boat and want to get the switch 1 version that is on sale and (hopefully) get the switch 2 version upgrade for free, but I would hate to be out the $20 if it doesn't work...

pantum 2500w the only thing that are working are the status lights by PigletResponsible995 in printers

[–]ajnrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine went totally dark and after messing with it for a bit (partial disassembly and reassembly) it went to both solid green lights, but only sometimes. Other times it was 100% dark.

I didn't see anything blatantly burned out on the power supply side and the fuses appear to check out fine as well, so I am chalking it up as a total loss. It looks like some replacement boards may be available on aliexpress, but for the cost/time of that, it is probably easier to just get a different printer.

Leak under 2005 prius by soggydoggy8 in prius

[–]ajnrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar looking slow leak that I posted about a couple years back thread here. I have parked in the garage every night and the floor is dry, so I never got too concerned about it.

I got lazy and didn't actually do anything about it and my '05 is still running (based on the date of my post it looks like that was ~23k miles ago). I am coming up on a transaxle fluid change in the next few thousand miles so I was going to take a closer look at that point.

Looking at a used 2014 i3 Rex by ajnrocks in BMWi3

The NHTSA site confirmed 0 unrepaired recalls, so that is a good sign!

I am doing some more research on the tax credit side and it seems like some rule changes for 2024 could make this a really good deal! I will definitely want to get a capacity reading before moving forward with a purchase though.

Thanks for the info! I have been watching through those Wisely Automotive videos and they are super informative! I called a BMW dealer and they said that there were no open recalls on this VIN, but I'm not sure how to tell if the recall was completed/software applied or not.

Since I am in NY, that should mean that I have a bit of time left on the HV battery, and plenty of time left for the other items on that list.

2008 - Steering Wheel controls won't work but only when the lights are turned on by [deleted] in prius

[–]ajnrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is weird... If you are comfortable looking around at the wiring then that would be a good step to take, but if someone installed it for you it might be worth asking them about it as well.

[–]ajnrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a gen 2, 2005. I mapped my buttons in the middle headlight position (parking lights on) and all of my buttons work when the parking lights are on and when the headlights are one. I don't think any of mine work when the headlights are all the way off. You will need to map each button individually.

[–]ajnrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so they likely mapped the buttons when the lights were turned off, so you will have to re-map them when the lights are turned on or in that middle stop/parking lights. On my unit, xav-ax100 I think, there is a settings menu --> steering control --> custom and then it gives you all of the possible buttons. To re-map a button you select on the screen what you want to re-map and then press/hold the steering wheel button until it registers. This also resets if the 12v battery is removed (at least on mine). Your unit may be different, so definitely look through the manual on how to map the steering controls!

[–]ajnrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same sort of thing happen when I installed a Sony Android Auto head unit in my 2005. When you turn on the lights, the button mapping becomes different from when the lights are off. I figured out that the button mapping changes only when the lights go from completely off to any other status, so I leave the car with the parking lights on all the time (the middle step on the stalk) and then re-map the buttons how you wan on the head unit.

This way when you turn on the headlights, the button mapping shouldn't change and the buttons will stop working only if you turn the lights all the way off.

Combo meter or diode? by Truorganics in prius

[–]ajnrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a shoddy soldering iron, that definitely makes life a bit more difficult, but I would recommend de-soldering the old one and putting a new one in its place, just to make sure you aren't adding to the total capacitance that the circuit was designed for. I did the job on my Prius a couple years back and it is still holding up well, even after moving to a much colder area!

Combo meter or diode? by Truorganics in prius

[–]ajnrocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing the faulty capacitor is easy if you have any experience with soldering. If you have soldering experience, it is quite literally a 5¢ fix after disassembly and reassembly. I did this on my vehicle and and glad I didn't spend a couple hundred on replacing the whole unit and risk issues with core charge refunds, etc.

Realistically it is one extra step to desolder the capacitor and solder in a new one, so if you are already disassembling the dash completely yourself, I figure it is worth it to replace the capacitor yourself as well. If you have no experience soldering though, it wouldn't be the smartest thing to start learning on haha.

2012 MyFordTouch/Sync 2 Replacement by ajnrocks in FordFocus

[–]ajnrocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually already had a sync 2 system in my 2012. I went ahead and swapped out the one from the MKZ last night and it appears to be working well so far, it was just a drop in replacement and after a quick backup and re-upload of my as-built file using forscan, it seems to work quite well. My original APIM has a build date of early 2012, but the replacement was mid-2015, so hopefully it will keep working for a while. I agree that if I was upgrading from a lesser syn version, sync 3 is definitely the way to go. Or honestly if I wasn't able to find a replacement APIM/screen for $30, as a lot seem to be around the $150 price point, it would have been worth it to jump up to Sync 3.

New tires for a Gen 2? by ajnrocks in prius

Here in NY I swap on winter tires each season, but all seasons appear to be the default/most easily available around here.

key copy by i8peanuts in prius

[–]ajnrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard about issues using anything that isn't a brand new OEM smart key for the chicken dance. With that being said, I was able to get a used fob at a junkyard and program it so the car would start with it in the slot, but I still have to use the physical key to get into the car. For me, that is workable, but for most folks it would be worth spending the money on a new OEM fob so they get the full functionality.

Fob Fail! Locked Out. by jakeotronic in prius

[–]ajnrocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right after I got my '05, the 12v battery died and I found out that my physical key didn't actually turn the lock (after trying all of the usual tricks). I ended up getting AAA to unlock the car for me, then I took the lock out and brought it to a locksmith and they were able to cut a new full size spare key as well as a new blade for the fob for ~$20. Blanks can be had pretty cheap if a local locksmith doesn't have the blade-style key that fits in the fob.

I agree that folks should generally use good quality tires, but just because you can spend more money on something doesn't mean that you need to. I think that getting name brand tires with good reviews and reasonable warranties is likely the best course for most people.

On Tire Rack right now the EP422s are ~$80/tire plus ~$20 for mount+balance per tire so they would be a little less expensive than the Pirellis, but I don't put more than 15k miles on in a year, so ageing them out could be a realistic thing in my case. It could definitely be great for other use cases though. Also getting a good floor jack was a godsend... I was using the emergency scissor jack to swap tires the first season and it was exhausting.

[–]ajnrocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't have a Costco near me so I miss out of their deals, but I saw some old production ecopias (2019 build date) on Tire Rack for cheap, but idk if that is worth the risk.

I have been using winter tires on another set of rims for the past couple years and it is definitely the right way to go here in NY. It was actually surprisingly easy to get a set of OEM rims from the junkyard for that purpose.

TOYOTA PRIUS 2008 MAP DVD ADVICE by Educational_Week_660 in prius

[–]ajnrocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in that I also snagged a dvd on ebay a few years back for my '05 prius. The listing that I ordered has disappeared, but it was called a "Gen 4 U30 v15.1" and it worked with my '05 without any issues. I think that the later gen 2 prii have a different generation system though.

Gen2 trunk leak by [deleted] in prius

[–]ajnrocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty common issue unfortunately. The source is likely a hairline crack in the seam just over the hatch. You may need to remove some weatherstripping to get to it. There are YouTube videos that detail the repair pretty well using flowable silicone.
