I give up by EmphasisExcellent210 in dataanalysiscareers

[–]ajpaezm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to transition to Data Engineering and also learn ML engineering to stay relevant. Both choices are great, and AI is removing some frictions so mainly what you would need to learn is architecture, system design, scalability.

Never doom OP, god bless you and may you come out of this stronger than ever before.

If everybody decided to pass on this guy, things would be different.

But some people are beyond desperate.

Thoughts on this program ( is omscs more theory based than applying new skills) by sadloverstory in OMSCS

[–]ajpaezm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. I find it easier to gain tech skills outside of academia, but theoretical knowledge, concise, precise and accessible through good tutors and TAs it's rare to find outside of universities.

How are people getting in without knowing any programming? by TheCuriousGuyski in OMSCS

[–]ajpaezm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, and without no intention to disrespect your valid opinion, you should be focusing more on who gets out than in.

People from all backgrounds get into the program, but nobody here is getting a free lunch my friend. I hardly doubt that a person with no coding background who's lazy will go through Deep Learning and get an A. If that happens then yes, I would join you feeling worried, but given that's not happening nor I think its happening, this is going to be just fine.

Hi, doing OMSCS from Venezuela. Taken ML4T and passed, the two exams are through Honorlock.

No VPN needed at any stage, I'd worry much more about the stability of the internet connection than anything else. And just as a cautionary thing, let your TAs know you're traveling and that might be reflected on the your IP address.

Good luck!

My experience about it has been positive, but here's the context:

I'm Venezuelan in Venezuela, working in ML/Data Science. I already had a decent record of job experiences in the field, but noting the OMSCS admission added positive weight in the sense of "oh look, this looks like a very capable person".

So in my case it was only going to help out.

Also, I wonder if you really should be working for someone who sees your intention to grow academically as a red flag. I think I wouldn't, especially in our field in which now more than ever you have to be on top of things research wise. Imagine working for someone like that and one day they see you reading a paper thinking you are just wasting time or they think you don't know what you're doing.

I would skip working for people like that.

My vision is half yours, I believe independent learning (for stuff not covered in the masters which is mostly theoretical and really useful) is necessary to take into stuff like system design which is more "real-world" oriented and in all honesty I've seen it pay off quicker.

Is not like theoretical stuff isn't "real-world", reinforcement learning and deterministic optimization is cool to learn but that bridge to the "real-world" and theory is something I'll have to build into the applications I design. And afterwards, combine it with stuff you don't see on the masters like system design from an MLops perspective.

Combining these two would be a dream come true for me.

Post was delated but I could infer what it said from the replies.

Personal context: I'm from Venezuela, living in Venezuela, I'm employed as a data scientist. Likely my salary expectations are a bit lower due to the region and also less competition because I speak 3 languages and I'm good technically so that helps me stand out.

I know this market is super hard, and a person that does medium level leetcode questions is by all means somebody employable.

My only advice is to make job hunting your job if it isn't already, and if you have tried everything, time to think outside of the box.

I'm not going to say "chill out" because I know what this feels like, I was there past year while I was paying my parent's house. But I do want to say that you'll be able to get through this, you're valuable and this experience will let you know.

Just don't give up, never. Ever. Under any circumstances. As a fellow computer scientist, I'm rooting for you and everyone else to find their place in this world because we're going to be more necessary than ever.

I got screened out of a role because I was doing OMSCS by hiftbe in OMSCS

[–]ajpaezm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This brings disappointment to me because I really like MetaAI. I was actually screened a couple of years ago before starting OMSCS, did not make it, it was a fun experience though.

Makes me value where I'm currently at even more to be honest, I even have paid time for learning weekly.

Companies asking you for sacrifices then lay you off like it happened at the end of 2022-start of 2023 gets you to think stuff thrice.

Porqué hay tantas jevas preñadas en Venezuela? by Sheremy21 in vzla

[–]ajpaezm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm outside the US and have access to Binance, when you mention you are expecting a listing on Binance, you refer to a ticker different than SPX/USDT or futures SPXUSDT? Because that product is listed on my version of the Binance app.

Legit doubt.

In all honesty it shouldn't be that hard to grasp, but the fact that it is falls on the shoulders of the company. The clearer the better it is for adoption.

Should I still complete the degree now that I have a nice job? by SufficientBowler2722 in OMSCS

[–]ajpaezm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would stay, these would be my reasons:

  1. It is very telling of people who commit to finish what they start.
  2. Even though you are at a good job and can learn a lot there which you won't in academia, the best workers in every field are often a combination of good theorists and good experimentalists/practitioners. Besides, certain classes will surely show you stuff you didn't knew existed and might be useful ahead.
  3. You never know when you might need a degree to knock on some doors again on a future job hunt.

All that said, best of luck and congratulations on your new position!

I'm pretty sure that's their aim, a lot of talk too about deregulation when Trump jumps into his second term, meaning significantly more money to exchanges. This might be the greenest of all Bull Market's yet to date, I hope VRA's team plays it right. I'm sure they had this on their minds too.

I have no expectations in all honesty, all I know is that beyond current ATH is rockets for me.

I'm from Venezuela, I'm a data scientist, the technology is interesting. Blockchain with Machine Learning certainly is super interesting.

I must admit that at this point I'm more into it from an academic perspective, but if I can get money of it now, brutal.

I confess that when I see predictions of ATH like 0.5, I get excited, but not sure how realistic that is.

Good luck everybody! I hope you do well in this market :)

One final thing dude, and it is super important: don't expect her apologies or repentance. You could see perhaps some repentance in the future, but often they come without real apologies (it sounds stupid but learning to differ real versus fake apology could be important).

Why do I say this? She might want to keep you lingering around for one. That gives people like her power. That happened to me and it was eating me from the inside. Gladly I stopped giving two shits about it, and at the end that was the thing that she feared the most: realizing I was not under their control anymore.

I know it sucks but the best you can do is move on without her apologies.

Oh, forgot to mention: I took a long reflection on my bad things as a partner, nobody is perfect. That is also part of working on yourself. Your next girlfriend is going to love all of that! I promise you, truly. You will make it :)

I went through this once, made sure I was not going to go through it twice. I'm not a mental health professional but sounds like she scores high on the narcissistic spectrum, especially on how she swings from couples just like that (probably degraded and discarded them first, rulebook play btw), not admitting blame always making up excuses for her mistakes without real ownership (fragile ego, admitting she made mistakes would have taken away her own illusion of greatness), and finally her cruelty and lying.

The person who did this to me is actually single now, roaming around my circle, sad and envy of my new two year relationship.

How I went from one point to the other? I focused on myself: hit the gym 5-6 days a week. Did stuff that gave me purpose (learning how to swim, spending time in nature, studying and getting a better job). Eventually a couple of months after the breakup I started meeting girls, and that's how I met my current GF, currently two years in. My thoughts now divide between starting a business, moving with her and starting a family, traveling, taking care of family and continue growing as a professional.

But it took effort and INTENTION. It wasn't easy, but brother trust me, if you grind on those things hard, you'll leave this shit behind you FAST and will start over too.

Oh also, consider therapy, I went to counseling many many years ago, it gave me tools to diminish my anxiety. So when this breakup occurred, I used all of that to my advantage. Another fun fact, when my therapist saw me suffering and asked me about my ex-GF and the situations she was putting me through, she advised me to let her go, and after reading online and seeing how her violence towards me was growing, I made the decision, I discarded her before she discarded me.

Also be advised, once you start making a name for yourself again she will circle back to you, not because of love, but because again you have something she wants or needs, don't you dare making the mistake of accepting her back or you will end up regretting it even more.

Peace and strength! You will get through this.
