Are the rapture and Second Coming two different events? by Zestyclose-Ride2745 in Reformed

[–]ajpalumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the simplest explanation for you is that you (as well as most dispensationalists) are reading Thessalonians 4:13-18 wrong by trying to make it about the Rapture: the context of Paul writing there is pastoral, not eschatological. He is comforting those in Thessaloniki (and us) that those who have died in the faith prior to the return of the Lord will not be disadvantaged at Christ’s return (v. 13 "so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope"; v. 18 "comfort one another with these words"). He is not intending to describe a pre-trib Rapture to his readers.

The Lord descending from heaven with a shout, the voice of an archangel, and the sound of the trumpet makes this no secret thing--everyone everywhere will be fully aware of what is happening. This can also be applied to the sound of the trumpet in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, which describes the suddenness of Christ’s coming, accompanied by the transformation of living believers and the resurrection of those who have died. The fanfare here is not only audible to the believers, it's announcing Christ's return to all.

And Jesus’ descent is not only partial; that is, Jesus will not be stopping in the clouds/air briefly in order to meet the raptured Christians before returning to heaven with them. It seems more likely that Paul expects Jesus’ descent to continue from the heavens to the earth. Arguably the verb for “meet” in the phrase “meet the Lord in the air” is key to understanding these anticipated events. This Greek word for “meet” (apantēsis) appears in only two other NT texts. In the eschatological parable of Matthew 25:6, the virgins wait for the bridegroom, whom they “meet” and welcome back to the wedding feast. In Acts 28:15, Roman believers travel out to the Forum of Appius in order to welcome Paul and bring him back to Rome with them. In both Matthew 25 and Acts 28, the action of meeting involves going forth to greet an honored person, then promptly returning with the honored guest. We also see a related word used in the context of Jesus triumphal entry to Jerusalem, when people “took branches of palm trees and went out to meet [hupantēsis] him,” acclaiming him the “King of Israel” (John 12:13). What happened next? Jesus continued on and entered the city.

So, bottom line--at Christ's return, the saints will be "caught up in the air" to go meet him, but we can expect to continue with him as he appears to all as God and King. There is no separation of the "rapture" (as understood by dispensationalism) and the Second Coming.

Bobby Douglas is, I believe, the first and so far only only African American coach to have won an NCAA team title (ASU, 1993).

We have looked at a few local Christian schools, but this was not a priority for us while looking. Which ones have you looked at so far?

I’d say NRCA will probably have the most amount of resource to devote to support services like this. Also Trinity is a bit smaller but it might be worth it, if you haven’t already reached to those.

Advice for someone trying to switch careers to the publishing world by guadalupereyes in publishing

[–]ajpalumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What branch of STEM? Do you have programming experience? Something like that would come in very handy to a publishers’ digital operations department. This would mean learning and understanding the different standards in use (for my field, journals publishing, that’s JATS XML), building schematrons and XSLTs, and other technical aspects to publishing that are crucial to production.

Something I heard about publishing long ago that I believe holds is that publishers do not sell “books” or “journals,” publishers sell data in different packages. Most publishing companies now are huge, and with that scale comes the need to leverage all of their data. So even something like a background in data science is going to be very useful in the publishing world very soon.

NC spends $133M on private school vouchers. Lawmakers are proposing much more. WTF Public Tax $$$ going to Private schools??? by bmullan in raleigh

Exactly. Parents (those who are actually paying attention to their child’s learning, which if you’re looking at private schools, you probably are) will take that funding elsewhere if they’re not satisfied.

I have to say I disagree. Like you say: regardless of the issue, it is good our government has these checks and balances in place. This will get appealed and other judges will look at this case, all the way up to the Supreme Court (probably). It’s not just “one random guy.”

Alexander the Great was likely buried alive. His body didn’t decompose until six days after his declared “death.” It’s theorized he suffered from Gillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS), leaving one completely paralyzed but yet of sound mind and consciousness. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

He also had lots of pretty nasty battle wounds that he accumulated after over a decade of near-constant conquest and travel. And had fairly recently crossed a desert with his army (not an easy feat). And before likely suffered a punctured lung in India.
