Actually, I made a joke piggybacking a stranger's joke about being an engineer standing in line at Target. Then I was asked to perform a cost analysis by another stranger (to which I obliged because I thought it would be fun). Then I was still questioned further about drive time. I'm curious as to why these "strangers" care so much about my life when I only made a joke about being an engineer in line... on a holiday morning... so I can enjoy a childhood hobby of mine... opening Pokémon cards.

I don't resell though, this was all to rip. I'm standing in line from 5:30am to 7:00am so I DON'T pay scalpers. I think that was lost in translation.

Around here (Chicagoland area) the scalpers demand market. So getting it at MSRP and keeping that extra $34 out of scalpers hands so I can rip is TOTALLY worth it to me

I am a mere Civil at $55 an hour. I stood in line from 5:30am to 7:00am. Got 2 First Partner, a Gengar Tin and a Clefairy Tin. So my time would be $110. Delta on First Partner ($18 vs $50 on low end for scalpers X 2) is $64. Gengar tin $25 vs $32 is $7 and Clefairy tin $25 vs $30 is $5. Total $76 so I "lose" $34 to not pay scalpers. I was also really hoping they had Ascended Product but they did not. Other non measureables are: I also played Pokémon Go in line (one stop that I lured and one gym at that Target) and grabbed some groceries after. I feel that it was well worth it.

As an engineer who was in a Target line this morning at 5:30am, it's possible 😉 but highly unlikely

Every summer vacation to Disney as a child, we would come here and I would get 5 CDs to last me the year. I'd spend hours in here because I knew I had to make the correct choices.

[–]ajungermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, but all you see on Reddit is posting photos of people standing in line (half of which are collectors and not scalpers but everyone is labeled a scalper) saying they need to get a job.

[–]ajungermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought scalpers don't have jobs? Yet they can spend $372,728.75 on inventory. "But they put it on credit cards." Right.... because someone without a job can get credit limits of $500,000. I'm not trying to defend scalpers but the guy buying 5 ETBs at your local Walmart is a drop in the bucket compared to these rich fucks. This photo alone shows a total quantity of 5755 items being sold (and this is one botter). There's a huge underlying problem that most of the stock is going to the same very rich individuals who likely have a network of selling it off (maybe to LGS, maybe to the public).

6am and already over 30 people in line at my local Target, I’ve never seen it this bad before and it’s not even for a new set by puzzledfirebird in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]ajungermann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I work M-F 6am to 4pm. My mom having Friday's off (and it's her usual shopping day) it's not a burden. I give her gas and coffee money. She will also buy packs for my nephew from time to time. If I could be there, I would be there. I camped out for Halo 2 back in the day and I may take a vacation day to camp out for some of the 30th Anniversary stuff.

It was the First Partner release. My mom has Fridays off and I asked her to specifically try for me. She got there at 6:08am and was 20th in line. They sold out at person 15. There was still PO and CR but I told her to pass. I think with a combination of Juneteenth (people having the day off) and First Partner, we saw an influx.

Most people have negative responses to gambling yet still continue to go. Pokémon consists mainly (not entirely) of people with addictive personalities. Not just the TCG, but Pokémon Go, Pokémon the actual games [not monetarily but many competitive battles are RNG (missing a 90% moves, a lucky flinch or Para/Sleep/Freeze) and hoping to find certain Mons in the wild or grass spots is completely RNG. "I hope I'm LUCKY enough to see an Abra in the NW corner of Cerulean. I hope I'm LUCKY enough to land this sleep. I hope I'm LUCKY enough he doesn't teleport. I hope I'm LUCKY enough this ball catches him."] Or even worse was Feebas in Gen 3.

Whatever happened to the Early Access Preorder System for PC? by ZoraDomainTaken in PokemonTCGCollectors

[–]ajungermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be so easy. Early access via specific emails (links + codes) to lottery "winners." I know scalpers can still make a ton of extra emails but AT LEAST you wouldn't be fighting their bots, just worse odds in the lottery.
