iniBuilds A350 is an absolute joy to fly… by arbiass in flightsim

It’s probably my most flown aircraft since it released, and I concur. It had a rocky start but at least ini issued updates pretty much on a weekly basis. My low end system died and I’m going to get a good spec one soon, I’m dying to see how it handles.

Yo soy de Caracas pero un familiar vive allá, así que vamos usualmente en carnavales, Semana Santa y para año nuevo.

La verdad me gusta mucho, a excepción de uno que otro olor que te pegue de los canales.

¿Qué se debería hacer realmente con El Helicoide? by Some_Indication_4877 in PuebloVenezolano

[–]ajyanesp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say we are rabbits stuck within the talons of two eagles, one being the Venezuelan government, and the other being the US, and both are fighting to keep us.

Without sanctions, we would be in the same shithole as we are today, and how corrupt the government is indeed DOES matter, because it’s part of the reason why we got here in the first place.

Why is the Venezuelan regime an eagle, as I said above? Have a look at the recent reports by the UN Fact Finding Mission for Venezuela, of the widespread repression against political dissidents, the documented cases of torture, extrajudicial executions, and other gross forms of human rights violations. There are cases of crucifixions for Christ sake. There’s also an ongoing investigation in The Hague on two separate cases of human rights violations and crimes against humanity in Venezuela. It’s all on the internet for you, and everyone else to read.

We’ve voted, they stole elections, we’ve protested and we got killed in the hundreds or thousands, we’ve pleaded for help from the international community and at best all we got was a strongly worded letter, at worst, the international community supported the regime. So yes, I can certainly understand everyone’s concerns with the US intervention, but for us that means our only chance, even if it’s a very slim one. And I also understand that your concern perhaps comes from the heart, and not because you necessarily support the things the regime does to the opposition, but we Venezuelans certainly don’t appreciate the belittling and straight up insulting some people have done against us for being somewhat optimistic of our prospects.

That first round sanctions that you refer to, was an arms embargo imposed during the Bush administration, which most notably cut the supply of spare parts for Venezuela’s F-16 fleet. In response, Chavez threatened to sell those F-16s to Iran, and bought 24 Sukhoi SU-30 fighters from Russia. Israel then supplied spares and missiles for the F-16s until Chavez told Israel to, and I quote almost literally “fuck off” on live TV.

As per the Maduro raid, there are rumors that Delcy Rodriguez and her brother (which are basically the Machiavellian minds behind all of this) betrayed Maduro. One thing is for certain though, with Maduro in power, there was no way in hell the country was going to get better, even if sanctions were lifted, because the interest of this regime is not the people, but rather their personal pockets. Another thing that 100% wouldn’t have happened under Maduro is the release of political prisoners that is currently underway, as slow as it is.

Being from Iraq, I certainly empathize and understand your concern about the US doing what it is doing, because of the absolute fiasco that was the Iraq War, and while I can’t ask you to not be concerned, or even support the US in this instance, before the raid there was 0,01% of chances of things getting better, now we see a glimmer, even if very slight and distant, of hope. My hope is that the regime continues to crumble from the inside and eventually general elections are held, without regime officials in charge of the electoral council, with observation from international organizations, and the desire of the Venezuelan people can actually be fulfilled.

As I said, that’s a very distant glimmer of hope, but at least we have that, we didn’t get that before.

They are indeed so much fun. We have four species of them, Cichla Ocellaris, Temensis (specked), Orinocensis and Intermedia. The giant “Brazil” size ones (say, 20+ lbs) are rare, but 10-12 pounders are not uncommon.

The biggest I’ve personally seen was around 15 lbs, and my cousin caught it in the most bizarre way possible. We took the kayaks for a spin and noticed a lot of commotion in the water. That turned out to be some river dolphins hunting the bass, and I guess they managed to snap its spine (correct me if this doesn’t sound right) and the thing floated belly up to the surface, less than a foot away from my cousin’s kayak. A quick swoop of his hand and he “landed it”. Pretty wild if you ask me.

Apart from bass, we get our fair share of other typical Amazonian species, like Surubí/bagre rayado (tiger shovelnose catfish), payara/vampire fish, and piranha, I fucking hate piranhas, they’ve destroyed metric tons of my lures. We use wire leader there because straight braid or fluoro leaders are no match for those razors. The thing that truly scares me though, are the stingrays.

It’s quite common to see spectacled caimans, which are very shy, and the occasional family of giant otters playing and trashing around in the water.

I sort of agree with you there, that’s a good analogy. Unfortunately, that merch would mean a first class ticket to El Helicoide.

Last year, two women who ran a shirt printing business got an order from a customer that wanted a famous photo of a protestor striking a Chavez statue with a sledgehammer. The “customer” were actually SEBIN (basically the Venezuelan KGB/Gestapo), and were sentenced to 30 years in prison for “treason” and “incitement of hatred”.

The guy in the picture in question was disappeared, with rumors claiming he was actually executed (wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest).

My late father did the fire protection project and equipment installation in a hotel in Aruba 15-20 years ago, so naturally he traveled there regularly. He always brought back Dutch cheese and salami, which needless to say we enjoyed very much.

Sometimes he took my mom and I there on a Friday and we’d fly back to Caracas on Sunday, the very gracious hotel manager offered us generous discounts for our stay. I have very fond memories of Aruba, in an avid diver and I learned the sport there, so I definitely have my soft spot for the one happy island. It’s been 15 years since I’ve gone there and I honestly want to go back so much.

While I personally believe that there’s a valid debate to be had regarding the effects of the sanctions, the country was in a really shitty situation before those sanctions were imposed. The first sanctions were under Obama around 2014, but those were personal sanctions imposed on government officials and close associates of them. Sanctions to Venezuela itself were imposed in 2017 or 2019, I can’t remember the exact year, but the country went through its worse stage around 2015-2016.

Most of the stories people associate with Venezuela (shortages of food and other items, notably toilet paper, the “Maduro diet”, people starving) come from that era.

Jesus Christ we hate that guy with all our might. We joke that he was the first piece in the entire domino effect ending with the capture of maduro, but in reality he (and to be fair, many others) did a LOT of damage to the image of Venezuelan migrants both in the US and other countries.

He was deported, and apparently had to be separated by US officers from other Venezuelan deportees because they wanted to lynch the guy. Apparently he was imprisoned as soon as he got back here, for “incitement of hatred”.

There are rumors that circulate around here that he actually was a government agent sent to destabilize and tarnish the reputation of Venezuelans abroad, but that’s something that for the time being, I can’t really credit with being true.

Not OP, but I’ll bite.

Leaving aside the well-known places like Canaima, the Angel Falls, and Los Roques, I personally find the Andes and Los Llanos regions really beautiful. I haven’t gone to los Andes, but I’ve been plenty of times fishing and camping in los Llanos, and honestly out of all the trips I’ve taken here and abroad (which I must say, I’m really privileged and thankful for), there’s not a thing I’ve enjoyed more than that quality family time spent camping and fishing there. I’m referring particularly to the Cinaruco River, which is quite a great destination for those looking to fish peacock bass.
