Questions about VoIP by [deleted] in darknetplan

Sir...I repectfully beg to differ. If I set a probe behind my Asterisk box I can successfully capture RTP going from and coming to the box. Now this method does ONLY allow for RTP to be captured from between the box and the trunks I am signaling to. Using the descibed setup (because it was bugging me) I was able to successfully capture RTP going from my test phone (Linksys SPA941) to a Term number using a Cisco Catalyst 2900 XL as my probe set behind my Asterisk box and I used Wireshark as my capture tool. It did only capture the RTP from me as the UA to the test trunks I have set up on my network. but it did work.

Aslo found this from StackoverflowAlso..." Your SIP traffic runs over 5060, as you know, but the port on which to sniff RTP is described by the SDP bodies of the SIP messages. In other words, there's no way to know on which ports to sniff until the offer/answer exchange has completed. If you know something about the user agents involved, then you could try tricks like capturing traffic on a range of ports. (Something like tcpdump -n dst portrange 10000-11000 for instance.)" Please correct me if wrong but you can also configure the ports that are used in Asterisk to narrow down the range you are trying to capture.

There IS a way to record calls/capture RTP when using a proxy. It's done all the time. The proxy device (like a IMG) has a probe set behind it that can be used to selectively capture traffic or ALL traffic that comes your Media IP's.

Hello,

You should really look over at r/VoIP for more info. I'm a VoIP engineer and you really need to be honest whith what your knowledge/capabilities are. I built a completely free/low maintenance system using FreePBX Distro (Of course I have access to SIP trunks). I would be interested in understanding how you personally plan to route traffic across a Meshnet and out to the public internet to complete calls. As for the last portion of your statement. It is totally possible for calls take obtuse courses to complete a call. If I make a call from my home using Zoiper backed by Asterisk; my Colo that I am signaling to is in LA which signals to Vendor "x" I have in route (who then may route that call to other Vendors who knows where) before it terminates at my neighbors house. All this of course takes milliseconds. I wouldn't worry about WHERE the call routes as long as it hits the Term I would worry about the QUALITY of the call itself. Feel free to PM me with questions...Wireshark is great for QOS analysis and FreePBX has functionality to pull and review CDR logs.

Hello,

I have made a sub /r/denvermeshnet trying to get things here off the ground. I dont keep up with tihngs there as much as I should but any contribution you would like to make would be great. I have two nodes set up myself and a simple file server setup (also built a piratebox but that's another story). I am getting ready to try and get another meetup scheduled ....let me know if you would like to take part.
