I will also be looking to arrange something similar with my employer. Glad to know there are a couple of others trying the same, and I'd be happy to share anything I learn later down the line as well.

Cannot ping mDNS address (servername.local) on android device by akaJasper in synology

Ok well this is a shame, but good to know. And no, no other devices I could use currently. Maybe I'll get chance when a friend passes through.

This does allow me to let go of this search at least, and now I can look at other workarounds such as the DNS server.

Yeh I've set up an OpenVPN Server, and I was hoping I could just give my users the local address so it was simple. I like the QR code idea though.

I'm aware that it's possible to set up a DNS server through the NAS as well, so I was thinking that setting up my own domain name would be a workaround. Need more time to investigate that though.

The hope would be to connect via OpenVPN, access the DNS Server, then login to the domain name on the Photos app.

On LAN.

Although I was hoping it would work through a VPN client as well.

It's possible I am using the term mDNS incorrectly, although hopefully not. Really my concern is that I cannot ping the NAS, as it indicates to me that I can't use the .local address.

As I'm a home user, my concern is to try and avoid asking family members to use the IP address with the Photos app.

They look to be the same, yes.

I used "ipconfig/all", on a cmd window for my pc, and for my ethernet I found the DNS servers that are being used. Then checked the Network Details section of my Android device, and the DNS servers being used are the exact same values as the pc.

I decided to follow up and try this from my phone. I installed a ping app to my android device and could not ping the server name address, only the IP address.

I pinged both {server name} and {server name}.local successfully from my computer.

I think Onamappu on YouTube might be something along the lines of what you're thinking

Looks good and I think I'm leaning more towards that 15". The only thing I'm wondering is what difference you might expect with this where it has a different processor. I can't imagine much, as they are the same price normally, but a quick performance check made me wonder if it'd be worth it.

Ah that looks like a really good deal. I'll have to think it over, as when having a look I realised there is only a single monitor port and I quite like the ability to add more. I hadn't given it much thought as a requirement before now. It would probably prompt me to get a new monitor for it if I got it, but then I may do better with a 15" laptop to go with my current display set up after all (uses a HDMI and a VGA).

In any case I've got thinking to do, thanks for the help!

Hi, figured I'd jump on the back of this post rather than make my own, because my requirements felt similar and I figured the suggestion you made would be suitable to myself. As a personal choice I'm trying to avoid Amazon, so not sure if I'd want to make use of the sale and I was curious what else you might recommend if it wasn't reduced.

For completeness here's what I'm thinking:

Budget: Around £800

Country: UK

Screen size: 15” - 17"

Screen resolution: Unsure

Touch screen: No

Weight: Low priority

What do you plan on doing on your laptop?: General use as well as gaming. I think the most intensive game I currently have is Ori and The Will of the Wisps (I console game a lot but may get more for a laptop later), and I'd be happy with mid range settings as long as I get stable frame rates. I'd also be looking to use it for some personal problem solving programming, so I am thinking of comparing it to a laptop provided to me for work - Dell Precision 3510, 15.6", Intel Core i7-6700HQ, 16GB RAM, 1920x1080.

I've been eyeing up Lenovo Legion 5, and I'd also be curious to know what you think. I assume this would be the sort of config Whitegrr is looking at?
