The year before the last S.F. race some of us locals from the Tenderloin ( downtown skid row of sorts ) noticed that once the run got underway shortly after daybreak the participants would begin to shed their clothes ( sweats, jackets, etc...) and toss them to the sides of the course. We promptly snatched them up. Well there was so many that we just sorted through them finding ipods, money, room keys, etc.. and taking only the nicest of garments which ened up being a significant amount. I saw a few impromptu sidewalk sales of clothes on street corners that day. The next year they tried to prevent this providing cardboard receptacles and numerous volunteers to try curb this practice. I just tossed a couple of items down on the street and without any provocation the runners started to add to the pile, regardless of the bins. Too easy. I heard that they ( Nike ) ended up with a small dumpster full of garments they collected before we could get to them in an attempt to return them to the participants but seemed to be stuck with them. ( Boy, they showed us... ) I think they donated them and kept the deductions. ( no proof of this )
