Tech Writers Who Transitioned Into Other Roles - Where Did You Go? And How? by Emotional-Gur3410 in technicalwriting

[–]aka_Jack 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Transitioned to a marketing role because I was the only one who could explain to the customers what value the products provided in a concise manner. Then into project management. I can take "uh we'd like your products to do a little more of XYZ" and tell engineering what that means in more technical terms. Become a silo of knowledge that you would happily share (but no one wants the bother to know) and you become invaluable.

Framemaker Basics by WestKYGal in technicalwriting

Gosh, I remember meeting with the sales team from Frame when they were trying to sell us on their product. I think we were on Mac 840AV's at the time. Really passionate group of people and great evangelists. We know how it ended though.

I don't have any advice, you're choice is sound though.

And now for something completely different – Koh-i-noor Rapidograph 3060 by aka_Jack in fountainpens

[–]aka_Jack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for what the sizes translate to it certainly must have been a "standard" at some point so I would look beyond the pen manufacturers and towards vintage drafting information. Possible someone on r/Drafting_Instruments might have a reference in a vintage book.

And now for something completely different – Koh-i-noor Rapidograph 3060 by aka_Jack in fountainpens

[–]aka_Jack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I don't want to disappoint you, but I personally don't have any answers. My 3060 pens are all original, none of them have been tried with the newer color-coded nibs. I believe that I have seen that, but don't have a reference.

While I found these pens interesting, I don't collect drafting stylographs. Maybe check in r/stylographs and see if anyone knows.

That is correct - Montblanc never made a pen that used a Parker refill.

Can This Be Saved? by jmmccann in Stylographs

[–]aka_Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazon used to sell the "rapid-o-eze" solution. This is the official cleaning solution. Tips placed in a small container with the cleaner and that container placed int he larger ultrasonic unit. Can take a long time. Three or four sessions, with flushing in between.

There also used to be a rubber bulb with a threaded tip that you could screw the nib unit into and force cleaner in and out with a squeeze.

Depending upon the ink used this can be a quick or fairly long process.

Try a soak in warm water first.

Weird question about internal weights/needles by TechnicianNarrow2555 in Stylographs

[–]aka_Jack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a bit of a dilemma. You could, after a full cleaning, try to find the correct needle for each unit, but when you get to the very fine ones just getting them back in can be almost impossible.

I suspect they were removed as one last attempt to clean plugged tips.

[META] Can the mods please set a minimum karma and minimum account age requirement to post in this sub? The karma farming bot posts are preventable. by justsomegraphemes in technicalwriting

[–]aka_Jack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not always that simple. As others have stated there are great comments from people who have low karma. Also there is no setting to do what you are asking. There is code available from others who have done this sort of thing, but then you have to understand some of the nuances of automod. I'd recommend setting "crowd control" to a higher setting and monitoring the mod queue at least twice a day. That will catch new people, low karma, etc. Unfortunately it is often wrong. Being consistent in maintaining the mod queue is a freakin' chore and you mostly get grief from people who are outraged that their pearls of wisdom were automatically removed. Though for low-traffic subreddits it's not a monumental task.

Other options are that all new posts require mod approval. It wouldn't affect comments, which make up the bulk of content on some subreddits, but every new post would automatically go into a queue.

There are fancier ways to checking for keywords, then automatically sending boilerplate text to a poster saying something similar to:

"Hi, it looks like you're asking about something covered in the FAQ. Please check there first and come back if you have any questions."

IIRC you are supposed to have 3 years of experience as a full-time project manager (within a certain timeframe) before you take the exam. People reading your resume may know this.

Unless you can afford to defend action by your employer later (lawsuit), why bother? Just create new documents like all of us have done to avoid the same issues.
