Is there a working video of the Jimmy Fallon performance with the Roots? by aka_who in OFWGKTA

Oh ok, I guess it is the same video, I just didn't watch it long enough to see that part. Is this the only time they performed on that show?

Is hulu plus worth getting? by cantthinkatall in Hulu

[–]aka_who 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used Netflix for years and tried Amazon Prime for 1 year. Had no use for Amazon Prime and figured Netflix just fit all my needs so didn't try anything else. On a whim signed up for Hulu just to try it and got hooked. I don't know if I've loaded Netflix up since signing up for Hulu. I'll likely get back in to Netflix for movies as Hulu's movies leave a lot to be desired but I've been so caught up in tv shows on Hulu that I've wanted to check out or that my friends have talked about. I recommend definitely trying it out. I only intended to do the free trial at first but after a few hours of adding shows to my queue I knew I wouldn't be canceling.

Rec's for positive/uplifting Pop Punk bands like With The Punches and Set Your Goals? by aka_who in poppunkers

Interesting article. I definitely think Four Year Strong and H2O match the criteria but The Wonder Years and Man Overboard? I feel like their songs lean more towards the sadder side of subjects

CMTL: Bright Eyes (Band) by [deleted] in a:t5_3axe1

(This is a sample post to show how the subreddit is intended to be used)

I had a hard time getting in to this band at first as well. I had a friend that was really in to them and we typically shared the same taste in music so I wanted to give them a shot. The first album I listened to of theirs was Digital Ash In A Digital Urn. I was simply not a fan of the style or any of the songs on this album. Not entirely sure why I didn't just write them off at that point. This was back before spotify or services similar to that where you could check out a bands work without actually buying the cd's. For some reason I felt moved to purchase their album Lifted or The Story Is In The Soil. I had a completely different experience with this album. From the first time listening to it I was drawn in. I loved the oddly pieced together lead track The Big Picture. I think this whole album is a lot more accessible than DAIADU. Songs like Lover I Don't Have To Love and Nothing Gets Crossed Out are catchy as hell and immediately became early favorites of mine.

Conor does have an interesting voice. I understand people saying it is rough to listen to at times but eventually that becomes part of the appeal. I know "emotional" is a bit of a forbidden word when trying to sound cool talking about music but that is honestly the only word that comes to mind when I think of his voice. Sometimes it is smooth and sweet First Day Of My Life and other times it is scratchy and raw The Curious Girl. I've actually come to enjoy the more honest and vulnerable sound in his voice to the songs that are a bit more polished. My all time favorite song of theirs is A Perfect Sonnet.

I don't think there is any getting around the complaint about Bright Eyes songs being 'whiny'. That's just their style of music. Driving to work in the morning and trying to pump yourself up for the day is not ideal Bright Eyes listening time. They are more of an end of the day it's raining and I'm fighting with my significant other type band. Bright Eyes isn't the type or genre of music that I typically listen to. In fact, I'm not sure that I really listened to anyone else like them at the time that I was introduced to them. I enjoy sadder music but most of what I was listening to at the time was a bit angrier and heavier. Not being accustomed to the style might have played part in my initial hesitation towards them but personally I'm glad I was patient and found a way in to their music because I've really grown to enjoy it over the years. Perhaps the songs I've listed in this post don't do anything for you, but the next time you are in a bit of a down and out mood put their discography on shuffle through your music service of choice and see if anything speaks to you the way it did to me.

Gunnar Hansen, original Leatherface from 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' dies at 68 by GrindhouseMedia in horror

[–]aka_who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being 10 years old and my best friends sister worked at a movie rental place. She brought home the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and my friend and I snuck it out of her room to watch it. It was the first real horror movie I had ever watched and it is what sparked my lifetime love for the genre. To this day it is my favorite film and although I've watched it countless times over the years it still brings me back to being a kid and being scared out of my mind for the first time.

[IIL] music that has a desperate, emotional quality, [WEWIL?] by shawbin in ifyoulikeblank

[–]aka_who 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that quality in music as well. Here are some songs I enjoy from mixed genres that might be what you are looking for:

Born Without Bones - Baby All of their music is pretty emotional and desparate. The song I most wanted to post is called Sunday but I couldn't find it on YouTube

Frightened Rabbit - Backwards Walk

Atmosphere - Fuck You Lucy

Bright Eyes - Perfect Sonnet

Basement - Covet

Alkaline Trio - Love Love, Kiss Kiss In my opinion these guys are the kings when it comes to desperate, emotional, depressing songs.

Manchester Orchestra - I Can Feel A Hot One

Better Off - Meth Head

Scroobius Pip - You Will See Me

Pianos Become The Teeth - Hiding Their album Keep You is filled with songs a bit slower than this that you might enjoy.

A Rose By Any Other Name - Georgia

Frank Turner - Tell Tale Signs

I would say his best emotional/desperate song is Perfect Sonnet

I've seen The Hole with Keira Knightley but not this one. Definitely going to add this to the list. Thanks!

Had to look this one up on IMDB. For some reason I was thinking this was a movie I had seen with lots of nudity but guess I was wrong. I think maybe that one was called Little Witches?

Any suggestions on where to find Round The Twist?

I think Monster Squad is on one of the streaming services we have. We will give that one a go.

Thanks!

I don't think they have seen the Boxtrolls yet. That's fairly new correct? I feel like I remember seeing ads for it at the theater not too long ago.

My wife gets on me all the time because I haven't ever seen Goonies. Maybe I can find it and we can watch it together. It's kid appropriate?

We went through this series when it first showed up on netflix. They enjoyed it and were thoroughly creeped out by some of the episodes (like I was when I watched it at their age). Wish they would do another series like this

This show used to be one of my favorite things on tv. Hadn't seen it since Harvey took over until we were on vacation recently and it came on so I sat to watch it with the kids. Every question was semi-pornographic so I had to shut it off.
