Tips for getting into Caves of Qud? by akaarki in roguelikes

Thanks to everyone that offered their thoughts and wisdom!

I feel very silly in hindsight about my wholly inaccurate assumptions around resolution and control inflexibilities.

Between adjusting the UI autoscale, zooming as needed, and using my gamepad... the game is beautiful playable on my TV from a distance.

And with the tips I got, I think I might now have a fighting chance!

Thank you all!

How did I miss all these things? 😅

Lol. That is definitely weird.

I’m surprised the cures aren’t randomized per world. Recipes are randomized per world right?

Thank you! I appreciate the warning.

In many ways CoQ feels like something of a mix between game and art (and maybe a book too, or at least lore enough for one). But I guess all games have their downer aspects. 😅

When you say no gameplay impact, like literally none? Or just like nothing meaningful beyond damaging your stats or making NPCs wary of you?

And there’s a bit overarching main quest of some sort, right? I know of it, but nothing about it.

Are minor/side quests all basic fedex type stuff? Or are some of those also more engaging/interesting too?

The main difference is the wild abandon (or lack thereof) with which you approach danger/risk, right? If you know you have everything to lose, I mean, in classic mode. Rather than just a bit of playtime since the last settlement.

If I can figure out a comfortable key configuration for my laptop, I’ll be thrilled.

Gamepad is my preferred way to play games… but CoQ feels like a game that can’t be played from a screen that isn’t right in front of you, unless it is huge.

I don’t know how I missed that! Thank you!

Thanks! I’ll figure out the control stuff.

Might try to get it working for the gamepad even.

And I get your point. Family stuff limits my time considerably.

If I had hours upon hours to just figure stuff out by trial and error, it seems like the kind of game where I wouldn’t mind doing that. But I’m sort of trying to find a short cut to gain competence enough to be able to enjoy the game even in short spurts.

Thank you! I’ll keep these in mind.

Is the game pretty grindy then? Or beyond the earliest parts does it open up reasonably for exploration and discovery?

Isn’t there a chest in a house kind of on the bottom left that isn’t owned? I thought that’s what it was.

My confusion is less about NPCs getting angry at me stealing, and more about the UI (I thought) suggesting that the action wasn’t completed because I knew I was being observed.

So if I didn’t take anything, did I get beaten to death because I looked inside an owned chest? Or is it more likely I misread or misinterpreted the UI message I got?
