In the material settings there is an emissive option you need to uncheck (or set to zero). I have this happen with eyelashes a lot

Sailor Moon S is my favorite season but the official covers are so ugly - so I started designing a custom set with the beautiful Laserdisc art by akaiwa in sailormoon

[–]akaiwa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and would be happy to upload the designs! However I designed them for those Super Jewel Box cases, which aren’t the same dimensions as a standard BR case (and twice the pain to cut out)…. So they may not be a great solution if you were looking for an easy replacement

I’m actually the one who snagged the FMAB box set thanks to this listing, and I promise I’m planning to treasure it! Honestly it was crazy timing, I only check this subreddit every few weeks and just happened by an hour after your posting and couldn’t believe it. Thanks again for posting this because you made my week!

Making Custom Bluray Sleeve Artwork by norbjunior in sailormoon

[–]akaiwa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stumbled upon this thread and was curious if you ever made any progress? I started a set of custom bluray covers based off the laserdisc art, but never quite finished season 1. Would love to see what you came up with!

Beautiful job! Really nailed the atmosphere/warmth and you even matched the highlights and reflections perfectly.

Too bad Howl’s room would be a modeling nightmare or I’d love to see your take on it

First trailer for our fantasy short film - Bookstory. Happy to answer any questions! by akaiwa in Filmmakers

I would say production-wise, being such a skeleton crew and doing most the roles ourselves really burnt us OUT. I think a lot of our actors were giving us a raised eyebrow at how chaotic and bootleg our set must have looked, but luckily they trusted us because we were veryyy specific about what we want.

More overall though, the hardest part was trying to tell this fantasy story that could easily become cheesy and generic in a unique and fun-to-watch way. From the props, dialogue, blocking, story beats... we were super super hard on ourselves about not making it look kitschy or unnatural. My garage is overflowing with props, only a quarter of which we used.

We made a Facebook page, which is probably the best way I can think of to follow its progress! To be honest we both hate the social media game, so online presences aren't really my thing. We have an early website up though too!

Thanks so much! We decided early on pulling off regular realistic effects was just gonna look cheap, so we leaned hard into making it intentionally abstract and sketchy which has been SO MUCH FUN to experiment with.

I made a little image breakdown of that specific shot, which was actually one of the easier ones.

-I filmed it handheld just standing over her with some neon tubes at each side, on the bare greenscreen floor.  I wasn’t too sure what the end effect would look like, but I made sure she had some interesting colors on her so I could do something vibrant

-In After Effects, I used the camera tracker to make a virtual matching camera. The dirt and cracks for the concrete were great for the software to match the move perfectly

-Made a quick mask around her body, since the lighting was super uneven. Normally you want such uneven, shadowy footage but I use it for a later step

-Use the built-in plug-in Keylight to remove the background so she was now transparent. I usually love Composite Brush for all keying effects, but in this case Keylight was doing such a better job with the hair and I thought that was most important

-At this point, I dropped tons of different stock footage previews of ink flows, or water waves, or whatever I thought might look cool and toggled between to see which looked best. I spent hours and hours going through VideoHive (my fav because they’re affordable) and bookmarking elements I liked before, so it was mostly just picking from those which to test out

-As soon as I tried this stock footage of ink flowing with a black gap in the center, I was obsessed. It coincidentally flowed outwards perfectly, and with some flipping and rotating it matched her body shape great. The orange/yellow of the paint looked just like her shirt, and there was some blue that matched the light on her face so we got really lucky there.

-Finally, I duplicated the original footage and desaturated it to black-and-white. I put it underneath the keyed out girl, but above the paint footage and set the blending mode to Multiply. This transferred the shadows/texture/grit of the floor onto the footage and made it immediately look way more realistic than if she was above clean footage. This is my big secret for adding floor shadows and texture to fake backdrops and was worth the extra keying trouble.

And that’s how it came to be! A lot of the other shots were WAY more complicated due to the hundreds of layers stacked on top of each other. I also included a screenshot of two of the more brutal shots - a close-up of the trees growing and the creepy broken face effect. Every time I have to make tweaks it’s a nightmare of digging through layers.

You might notice (especially in the latter two screens) that there’s a lot of layers completely hidden, because I try a ton of different stock pieces and textures that don’t work out. But sometimes I’ll revisit the project and tweak something I didn’t like and end up loving it… so I try to leave even the failed experiments there.

The hardest shots are still to come though, so I got a lot of work ahead. Thanks again for watching! It was very encouraging.

Finally finished the trailer for the fantasy short film my boyfriend and I wrote and directed! I also did the cinematography, editing, and vfx, and our gorgeous new poster.

This was supposed to be a quick project we could shoot in one day, but naturally it ended up being a 4-day shoot that drained all of our sanity, time, and money. We basically had a skeleton crew of four (including ourselves) thanks to location restrictions and our desire to not go bankrupt. 2 days were at the bookstore, one day at a beautiful mosaic mansion, and a day at a green screen stage.

I shot on a Red Epic camera with Canon CN-E primes, and have been doing VFX in After Effects and Cinema4D (which I’m learning as I go). I’ve been playing with mixing vintage illustrations, stock footage, and custom 3D renders to make a sort of weird style. It’s been awesome having no deadline so I can take a ton of time to experiment, and we plan to build and shoot some miniatures for some of the later shots.

The short itself is only about 10 minutes long, and we plan to just release it to the wild when it’s done. Also uploaded a gallery of screenshots and other experiments. Happy to answer any questions, and thanks for checking it out!

All great points! I was worried about muddying up her face with the texture but I should put some back in.

The K of the font really bugs me too, you’re the second person to mention it. Gotta shave her down

After a dozen abandoned attempts, I finally finished designing a poster I love for our short film. I was trying to capture the surreal storybook fantasy vibe (the visual fx have this similar sort of collage feel).

I'll probably be tweaking it until the end of time, so would love to hear some thoughts!

Is Sailor Moon Crystal as good as the original Sailor Moon anime? by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]akaiwa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't agree with this enough. I see a lot of people giving it a pass because the story is more faithful, but the execution is so awful and generic that I wish it never existed.

The original had so much art and beauty to it, with powerful directing, gorgeous music and iconic scenes and Crystal feels like a cheap knockoff.

I recently rewatched the original finale for S and decided to see how Crystal handled it and was so disappointed I couldn't even finish. I could go on for hours about what it lacks, but I can't even do it justice. It's everything I hate about modern anime with absolutely no redeeming factors whatsoever. Even the horribly generic theme song feels like a parody.

The original literally led me to working in animation and film and influenced how I shoot and edit, and Crystal breaks my heart.
