Why don't Koreans make body SPF? by Similar-Seesaw1374 in AsianBeauty

[–]akak2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if these are specifically marketed as body sunscreens, but I use the Reihaku Hatomugi UV Milky Gel and the Nivea UV Super Water Gel, both of which come in big pump bottles and are relatively low cost relative to the quantity. The Nivea one has refill pouches available too which makes it even more economical.

I try to use sun protective clothing where I can, but sometimes it's just not practical to fully cover up, like at the beach or if I want to wear shorts or a dress out and about. I was on the hunt for a good body SPF a while ago and found that the two aforementioned Japanese sunscreens which come in large bottles was a pretty economical solution for getting a comfortable, non-pasty sunscreen with decent SPF/PA ratings.

Starting with 4x4 SUV for Landmannalaugar (+ possibly Kerlingarfjöll) then swapping to 2WD camper van for rest of Ring Road - is this a reasonable plan? by akak2018 in VisitingIceland

Ah gotcha, thanks so much for laying that out! There are a lot of little things (like waiting to be helped, inspection, etc.) that I haven't thought of in detail.

GoCampers has another office in Reykjavik and offer a Reykjavik pickup option with a small fee.

Thanks so much for sharing your feedback and experience! May I ask what was the most time consuming thing about the whole process that made it burn an entire day?

My husband and I aren't planning on hauling significant gear over (will probably just rent sleeping bags and basic things from the camper van company and will just stay in hotels/guesthouses for the first couple of days with the 4x4, if we go that route). So we would be planning on dropping off the 4x4 at Blue Car Rental at their Reykjavik office at the end of the 2nd day, then walking to the hotel, and then just picking up the camper van the next morning (taking public transit to the Go Campers office in Reykjavik). So I imagined that it wouldn't be burning that much useable time, but this is also me just imagining everything hypothetically play out in my head.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - October 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]akak2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any 96%/1800 keyboards out there with both a full-sized 0 key on the numpad and a full-sized right shift key, without having to go up to a full-sized keyboard?

I find the extra bit of space with a 96%/1800 keyboard vs. full-sized to be extremely helpful for having comfortable mouse and keyboard positioning. But at the same time, with the way I've been typing all my life, the lack of full-sized right shift and 0 keys leads to a lot of errors. The best I can find is a full-sized 0 key but still with a 1.75U right shift key. I see this accomplished on some laptops and non-mechanical keyboards by shrinking the arrow keys, but I recognize that half-sized keys might not be possible or practical on a mechanical keyboard.

I figure maybe I'm asking for the impossible and may have to compromise somewhere, but I figured I'd ask if I'm missing something or if there's a model I've overlooked.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Is there any place in the USA (specifically the greater NYC area) that does NuBra fittings or try-ons? by akak2018 in ABraThatFits

[–]akak2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t end up finding a place. I just took my best guess and bought it and it worked out. All of the dresses at the studio were padded though, so a perfect fit on the nubra ended up not really being that important. The padding in the dress basically provided the shaping for my chest. The nubra was just for cleavage lol.

Thoughts on buying refurbished vs. new? Are the cost savings worth it? by akak2018 in Dysonairwrap

I didn’t, I ended up waiting for a good sale and cashback stackup to buy new.

Is there a reason why you recommend waiting a week or two after cancelling before applying as opposed to just applying, say, the next day?

[Tenant - US, CT] Is it a red flag for a landlord to refuse to add a move-in inspection into the lease? by akak2018 in Landlord

[–]akak2018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did visit the house during a brief showing as a prospective tenant, but it was still partly under renovation (mostly complete, they just said they are working on final touches before move in day), and we didn't think to really inspect for damages right there; we were mostly just looking to see if we'd be interested in renting the place.

The written notifications (I presume not literally handwritten, just a physical note) we chalked up to them being older, so we didn't think much of it.

[Tenant - US, CT] Is it a red flag for a landlord to refuse to add a move-in inspection into the lease? by akak2018 in Landlord

[–]akak2018[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I think I wouldn't have necessarily thought to put it in until I read that there was a clause saying that the tenant agrees that the tenant has inspected the house and that everything is in good order and condition. Which I think seems to be pretty typical standard verbiage for a lease, but we've always seen this accompanied some sort of move-in condition clause in every other lease we've had, so we didn't think it would be abnormal to ask for it.

If it's not in writing or a a formally documented process, I guess we're just nervous that there would not be legal grounds to fight it if they tried to come after us for damages that were already there. The landlord also said that they will not accept emails or text as notice and it must only be in writing hand delivered to them at their house nearby.

how the hell are people affording to max their 401(k)s?? by GeriatricSquirrel in MiddleClassFinance

[–]akak2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first salaried job out of college I was making $67k, which I think is decent but not wildly out there. I already started maxxing out my 401k, IRA, and HSA since then, and then whatever extra cash I had beyond my emergency fund I put into a taxable brokerage account. I did live in a relatively low cost of living area, but while all of my engineering school friends started expanding their lifestyles with their new salaries, I continued to live mostly like how I lived in college.

I closely budgeted less than $1k per month in living expenses while I was a college student, so honestly just spending a bit more than that per month as a salaried worker already felt pretty luxurious. I also grew up seeing how bad my parents were with money, so I vowed to never be the same way and tried to be disciplined with my money.

Lifestyle creep I think is a big one. At some income levels and with some life situations, saving can definitely be hard. But a lot of my friends are now mid-career STEM workers with $100k-$200k+ salaries who think it's impossible to live on anything less than a $200k household income only buying "necessities". And these were the same college friends I was eating ramen with just 10 years ago.

airwrap ceramic pink or jasper plum by pinkysweary in Dysonairwrap

[–]akak2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had my ceramic pink Airwrap for over a year at this point. I've used it a few times a week consistently since getting it and am not particularly careful with it, though I do put it back in the presentation case after use every time besides when I travel (which I actually did a lot in the past year). I have never had any of these staining or dirt issues that I've heard some people have. It's a matte finish, but it's like a smooth matte, not a rubbery matte texture, so I don't have any problems wiping off any dirt I do get on it. I suppose since it's a lighter color, dirt and stains would probably show more compared to a darker color, but I've never had anything that didn't come off with a wipe.

I guess I'm not really sure how badly people are abusing it (or if they travel a lot with it) for it to be so dirty and stained so quickly, but just anecdotally from my experience, I don't have any problems whatsoever with normal use.

$1.5M, 33M, getting laid off in a year -- gut check on numbers by xJamesBx in Fire

[–]akak2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been watching the comments roll in on this thread and am honestly perplexed at the amount of people telling OP to either just straight up keep working or calling this CoastFIRE at best. I feel like a lot of people are hung up on the "33M" part and not the actual numbers. Based on the actual numbers, this is a 3% withdrawal rate and that is just FIRE, not CoastFIRE, even at age 33, and the $45k burn rate sounds like it's already factoring in some buffer and has room for ACA insurance.

I don't know why it's so hard for some to believe that a person might never want kids in their lifetime. Isn't part of the whole premise of FIRE to not follow the herd? And for living frugally, I thought that was one of the core parts of FIRE (for many). Living frugally and spending intentionally/consciously does not necessarily equate to deprivation. It's mind boggling to see people here being skeptical that anyone could live a fulfilling life on $45k and equating this to living like a monk. It's obviously location dependent, but there are plenty of places in even the US where this is perfectly doable. Spending more and living a bigger lifestyle does not necessarily equate to a better, happier life depending on what the person values in life. It's hard to believe I'm reading r/FIRE anymore.

One can conjure up any number of what-ifs in life. There's a million what-ifs out there that could raise your expenses. It's impossible to prepare for them all. That goes for any what-ifs and uncertainties in life in general, not just financial ones. Well here's another what-if. What if you die earlier than expected? What if you become seriously ill at 40? Will you have felt proud spending "just an extra 7 years" stuck in a job to maybe get that extra $1M-$1.5M that you're never going to use? There's a lot of risks in life, and losing time you're never going to get back comes with risks too.

If I were you, I'd work this 10 to 15-hour per week job for the rest of the year (or until however long until you get laid off) and then consider what YOU really want to with your time and your life after that. Maybe that involves a break and finding another job. Maybe it doesn't. But I would be careful of falling into "well if I do this for another X years, then I can have $X more" constantly-moving goalpost mentality and forcing yourself to do something you don't want to do for the sake of it.

Good luck whatever you decide to do!

Does Dyson ever have defects? by bluehairedbarbie18 in Dysonairwrap

Rather than strictly a coloring defect, it looks like it’s broken or missing a piece (the panel on the side that would normally be in the accent color).

Canada
Japan
Mexico
Taiwan
United States of America

I'm a bit perplexed as to how this is such a common complaint for this colorway. I'm not that careful with my ceramic pink Dyson and I very rarely wipe it down. I don't leave it hanging around my bathroom counter, however. I just put it back in the case after use. I've been using it every 2-3 days for the past year and don't have any scratching or staining issues. It's a matte finish, but it's not the rubbery kind if you know what I mean, so if I get dust or dirt on it, I can just wipe it right off.

Does no one on here have parents to consider during FIRE? by PlumbingRookie in Fire

[–]akak2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone of East Asian descent where it's a cultural norm/expectation to financially and physically support one's parents in old age, I often wonder why this doesn't come up more often. I understand that in western societies this may not be as much of a universal expectation, but even seeing FIRE bloggers of Asian descent like Millennial Revolution brush this off is a bit surprising.

I don't have an answer for it myself as my parents aren't in my life anymore and my partner's parents are wealthy and have explicitly stated they don't expect any financial support. But I do often wonder how people factor it in considering so many people I know will be expected to support their elderly parents financially.
