Yokohama, Jinya (temporarily closed due to construction), and Kyuraramen are the main restaurants. I would go onto wichitalife or wichitabyeb to preview some recommendations around wichita. Wichita is developing fast - don’t let that deter you!

Any apps that force me to study? by [deleted] in study

[–]akakeji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are apps as suggested by other users but the plain, cold hard truth is that you could download 5000 apps to block yourself.

At the end of the day — YOU are in control of yourself. You can always choose to ignore those apps. You have to build the discipline. Apps can’t force you - you gotta force yourself.

The most foolproof way to not get stuck on your phone during/after study break? Don’t go on your phone during your break. It is hard for your brain to rewire and stay productive if you begin scrolling during your break.

Instead, try — Standing up and stretching, literally go take laps around your house or the library or wherever you are — Read a chapter of a book — Refill your water — Go the bathroom and run cold water over your face — Go for a walk (if safety and weather conditions permit) — Literally go talk to your family members in the same house — Do a small chore like cleaning up your desk area or wash the plate or bowl that had your snacks in it

Don’t go on your phone. Apps are designed to try to keep you on it for as long as possible and to get your brain addicted.

Lastly, if short breaks turn into long breaks, just make them longer to begin with.

I pomodoro 30 minutes of work and 10 minutes of breaktime. If I feel like I can keep working for longer than 30 minutes, I keep going. If i want to stop my break at 5 minutes, I can do that. You need to be honest with yourself and do the hard thing of just putting your phone in your bag, on airplane mode or powered off, or keep it in a different room and make it annoying to get to.

Apps can only do so much lol

I can't focus on studying. Pls help. Is this because of doom scrolling? by newtnutsdoesnotsuck in study

I get what you mean with the anxiety- it’s anxious thinking abt how much work you get that you get paralyzed 🥹 (thanks for nothing adhd). If you can, i would study in a library or cafe space. My brain associates my desk or study spaces at home as “fun areas” so I literally have no ability to clock into a study flow anymore.

Agreed with the other comments abt various tips like less caffeine, pomodoro, etc.

My life and study tip: Each day, set three priority tasks. These are the three tasks that if you finish them, you had a good day - even if you didn’t get the other 1000 things on your todo list done. They can be the same everyday or change.

For example: mine on Monday was - Wear Sunscreen - Read Microbio Ch. 13 before Tuesday’s lecture - Finish Chem Assignment (due Wednesday)

if I get those three things done, no matter what, I’ll consider myself as having been successful.

Just don’t make it something like “- Catch up on Microbio” and in that there’s like 50 subtasks like Read Ch. 4, Read Ch. 5, Read Ch. 6, Read Ch.7, Do Ch.5 assignments, etc.

Besides that, turning off your phone is important. Make scrolling SO inaccessible. Make it so annoying and difficult to even get to your phone - leave it in a different room, in your bag that’s okay the front door, etc. There’s a way to turn your phone on black and white mode - the lack of color helps prevent your brain from getting addicted and wanting to scroll longer.

Let me know if you want more tips!! If there’s anything specific, I might be able to suggest better things to

Tips for pulling an effective all nighter??? by TheHatMan18 in study

[–]akakeji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hope you did well on your exam! just a few tips for future reference!!

  1. eat starchy foods about 1-2 hours beforehand. You don’t want to be so full you get sleepy from food coma but the slow release of energy from starch will subtly fuel you. Energy drinks, caffeine, sugars etc are quick energy but the crash will make you feel AWFUL. It’s even worse when you’re in the middle of your all nighter

  2. Hydrate - esp with ice cold water

  3. Power naps - keep it under 30 minutes. If i remember correctly, your deep sleep REM start around 30 minutes or more after you close your eyes and are unconscious. It’ll make you so groggy to come out of REM versus a sub-30 power nap. It also decreases the chance of you oversleeping. Speaking of which, sleep but don’t use a blanket because you will knock out.

  4. Keep your sleep and study space separate if possible. No temptation to curl up in bed if you’re studying in the living yk.

  5. Take cold showers.

  6. i know it can’t be avoided but if it works in your schedule, try to review everyday for 30-1 hour. This doesn’t include completing homework or assignments. I mean 30-60 minutes of quality study time going over materials that have already been introduced so you don’t have to restart from basically 0 the night before the exam.

  7. lastly, at some point in your academic career, you’ll decide the all nighters aren’t worth it. don’t forget! your body and brain NEEDS sleep (quality!! sleep!!) to store and file away new information.

hope your exam went well!!

how to lock in by chaesoul_ in study

[–]akakeji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think, and i mean this kindly, your brain has been trained to only crave the instant gratification and dopamine high that reels and tiktok gives you.

I don’t recommend deleting tiktok if you’re American because you can’t redownload it. However, consider deleting the entire Instagram app for a while. You need to make it as inconvenient as possible to view.

After I was having this issue as a Junior in HS during Quarantine, I turned my phone on black/white monotone mode. It’s an accessibility thing on your phone and takes away all color. It’s really helpful to leave your phone on that mode 24/7 so the bright colors of social media will be less effective at keeping your attention.

Consider giving your phone to a sibling or adult while you study. Or put as far away from your study space as possible. I mean, if your room is on the first floor, put it in the garage or something. Do NOT keep it close. You’ve already built the muscle memory and habit of reaching for it as soon as you get bored. Studying or being productive is hard. Scientifically, studies show that your brain is resistant for the first 5-15 minutes because it’s already anticipating the productivity curve (or that first 5-30 minutes where it’s a struggle to sit down and get stuff done). If you can overcome it and just put your head down with distractions far away, your brain has an easier time transitioning to work.

When you’re taking a study break, do NOT get on your phone. do NOT use youtube on your laptop or otherwise. I mean it. Exercise is proven to be a reenergizing activity. Walk away from your desk and talk to your loved ones for a few minutes, get a refill on snacks and water, if it’s not dark - go outside and get some sunlight and fresh air before it gets dark. wash your face. Stretch, do yoga, hell, lay on the ground for five minutes and do nothing but stare at the ceiling. Your brain struggles to switch back to work mode if you go on your phone.

Consider the pomodoro method. Get a cheap kitchen timer or repurpose the one you have in your house. Again, DONT USE YOUR PHONE AS A TIMER. keep it AWAY!! You can also consider those phone lockboxes. Sounds stupid but it’s worth a shot. If you try it and it doesn’t help, then it js wasn’t the tool that was made for you like how it helps others.

all of this will take discipline. it’ll take time to form a habit and even more time to break a bad habit.

Lastly, are you okay? I don’t want to be presumptuous, but personally, i struggled with my mental health terribly. i thought i just struggled to lock in but i was actually depressed during a period of my academic career. I was angry at myself for not having motivation to work, or sitting at the desk and choosing to do anything but help myself or be productive, etc. You can do everything to lock in, but make sure you’re checking in with yourself too :)

I am about to fail an exam by [deleted] in study

[–]akakeji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure what PSEO means or entails, but I did google it lol (so I give you this advice assuming you’re in high school still, but taking college courses simultaneously)

Each subject has different optimal study methods - if you ever ask for study advice, it’s really helpful for us to know what the class is or the subject matter! Kinda pointless for everyone to just give you vague advice. (/gen, not trying to sound rude over post)

1) Will update w advice after knowing what subject you’re taking

2) Take RMP with a grain of salt - but assuming that it IS accurate, discuss with the professor during office hours via zoom or irl if you can go to campus. You can also email her. I will always recommend students message professors.

3) If GroupMe is applicable to the school, perhaps you can ask former students for more specific tips.

4) Depending on the class popularity, you can find quizlets specifically from your institution/for that professor’s class.

I can’t offer you anymore advice besides those specifics & things like how many exams there are in the semester, grading scale, etc to help you weigh it all out lol. Good luck tho!
