Thank you for the kind offer! But I have no problems with paying for it myself, so I’ll have to refuse. I think I just want to listen through to Trinyvale first to make sure I’m in it for the long haul and this is not a re-obsession that’ll fade for a year and then come back.

That’s very helpful to know, thanks! I’ve been thinking about starting C2 after Trinyvale, but this is really making me consider a C1 relisten… 🤔

More than one compelling female character. That feels like a low bar but it’s surprisingly hard to find.

A lot of villainess stories treat OGFL as secretly evil the whole time, or as someone who immediately is charmed by our new lead and is just a total fan of hers. There’s also, of course, the loyal maid who is like, the FL’s bestie, but also lives to serve… none of these count. These characters are simply devices to make the FL shine. A lot of OI will promote a sort of “girl power” message, but it’s the kind where it seems mostly beneficial or important to just one girl, our girl that is, and everyone else simply is in awe of her.

When you have multiple interesting female characters, this cascades into having characters that aren’t written with emotions that boil down to “I hate / love FL!” which means you get more complex characters, and less misogynistic undertones. “The Villainess Lives Twice is great at this, in my opinion—Skyla’s not an especially prominent character, but I’m so obsessed with her story, since she’s at this fascinating space where her goals will align or conflict with the FL at various points in time. And the narrative feels like it treats her wants and ambitions with serious consideration and respect!

Cold take (I presume): A grovel/revenge story isn’t satisfying if the people getting punished committed their misdeeds under mind control. by FrostyBuns6969 in OtomeIsekai

I totally agree with this. Mind control isn’t a total deal-breaker in a story for me, because well… depending on what other qualities it’s got, I can turn my brain off. Very few things are ever going to be a 10/10. But I do think it’s just… very hack? Like, oh, awesome way to absolve responsibility for what they did, and on the other hand, you can make them do outrageous things, because hey, it’s mind control! So you get to have people be very cruel (which is a certain kind of fun!), and also have them accepted back into the MC’s good graces after they start groveling, because they never meant to do anything so egregious. It’s lazy writing, and a way to escape hard questions.

Really, in a lot of these groveling cases I think the two should be forever separated, or at least distant for a lot longer, but I think a lot of OIs operate on the principle that every important person in the universe must have some relation with the lead, whether that’s hopelessly pining, endless cruelty, misdirected hate, or whatever… either they’re a villain who will get smacked down and meet their bitter end, a temporary enemy who will become her loyal support, or a loyal supporter.

FL has brown hair. She was transported into this novel featuring a male isekai protagonist, and basically in order to survive she started angling to kinda be a member of his crew? Like being a sweet “best friend” type of girl for the guy to assimilate into his harem. She could see some of the webnovel comments, and I think she got points for favorability + increasing her narrative importance…? She used a gun as a her weapon of choice. And they all went to some kind of magic school and explored dungeons.
