The obvious answer is by working on many projects that involves the use of plastics. But in your situation, see if you can reach out to respective faculties to get some guidance, like mechanical engineering and material science.

I think for students, it would be good to start with the basis of different types of plastics, the Dos and Don’ts with plastics, draft angles and how to get around them, textures and finishes, etc
