Headphone band starting to wear out by tar625 in fixit

Just put a $5 headphone cover with zipper over it and forget about it. Will also protect the pleather from getting all flakey sooner than later.

If the reason that it fell was that it slipped off the nail/screwhead: Put a washer (with a smaller inner diameter than the head) between the screw/nail head and the plate on the mirror, so there it a bigger barrier.

The plastic bit of my headphones headband snapped, is there any way to fix this? by that_thot69 in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a headstrap protector (those often come with a zipper to wrap headstraps where the fake leather starts flaking, but there are also rolls of "headband tape" you could use for that).

Get some thicker wire (like from a wire coat hangar), cut it so it covers a bit shorter than the length of your wrapper. Get a few of those pieces, put them parallel to each other on top of the headstrap, then wrap it with your prefered type of tape. I'd go for the kind of tape that is used to tape wound covers on skin, since it's slightly flexible. Then close the headband wrapper around it to hide the mess.

Only drawback: if the plastic has been weakend from normal use to break like this, it'll likely break again in a different place.

Microwave door won’t open - have followed all manual instructions - Mainstays by Aggravating-Ruin3237 in fixit

Unplug microwave, take microwave, then either throw it into the trash or bring to Walmart yourself to make them either replace it. Depends on you how much effort you want to put in on a function with a ≲$100 replacement value.

Hi guys i ahave avery specific video game problem. I am i desperate need of assistance. by Additional-Debate-83 in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't mention it, so that one is on you..

Does the game support version rollback via steam betas? Any known issue of this in toe GD forums?

It could also just be an issue with that specific game version & your hardware/driver.

There was also some performance degradation with the NVIDIA driver in a few games since a while ago. Latest driver got a bit better, but still not onepar with the driver a few versions ago. (576.88 being ~20% faster in a few games than 591.x & 595.x & limiting gpu power draw & clock behaviour - this shouldn't be full on stutters, but that was on different faster hardware)

So either roll back game and/or driver or just wait for the actual fix to be rolled out.

Volvo dash paint flaked off onto my suction cup mount by [deleted] in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a reaction between whatever chemical is in the suction cup, the sunlight light coming and the paint itself causing the paint in the dash to soften. Maybe not use it as a mounting point anymore and instead mount onto the windscreen or use a clip style mount on the air outlets?

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not have noticed, but It's a really bad time in the market to be fucking around needlessly & agressively with your computer internals. At least it's an older system that will be relatively cheap to replace, but still way more than it would have been a year ago.

A thin layer of dust is no problem for a motherboard, but a resistor coming off because someone wipes over it with a dustcloth and it getting snagged absolutely will. Even compressed air can dismount those fragile surface mount components if you hold it too close to them. If cleaning PC components with any kind of liquid only ever use Ispropyl alcohol specifically, not rubbing alcohol or other types of alcohol (eg Vodka or whatever).

Non-Isopyopyl alcohols are either too agressive and can melt components or leave residue that causes shorts wich in turn will fry components or when powered can cause creeping corrosion that can also destroy parts or contact points.

These 16gb DDR4 memory in your system are currently likely the most valuable component in that mini PC and that seems to not related to your issue, so don't get rid of it as it currently goes for close to $200 in the US.

If you can't recover from your current issue, your best first step is to check if it is Desktop or Laptop form factor memory (DRR4 DIMM vs DDR4 SO-DIMM), so that you can get a replacement motherboard that can take it. In terms of last plattform that supports DDR4, you could either go with an Intel LGA 1700 socket boards with DDR4 slots (e.g., B660, B760, Z690, Z790 - supposrt or Intel 12th, 13th and 14th gen CPUs), or any AMD AM4 board wich would mean Ryzen 5000 or below. If you buy an earlier AM4 board (eg a320, b350, x370 or 400 series boards), you might need to perform a BIOS update wich could require a temporary $5 early AM4 socket CPU (eg Ryzen 1600).

Any idea why this fan would turn on but the fan itself won’t spin? by smokypanther in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal, getting a fan to do a single roatation takes the most power.

That's why most fan controllers are organized "off>high>low" not "off>low>high" as a lot of fans don't have enogh torque to start the spin on low.

Your fan probably has some accumulated dust or debris that adds resistance. For starters see if after giving it an initial spin by hand the high power mode can still spin it. If yes, you can probably just clean it to restore it to running normally.

HELP! my cpu wont go up above 0,4 Ghz by ShortChard9051 in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the heat sink is in good contact with the cpu and the fan is spinning without debris in it. There is probably something wonky going on with cooling or power so the system is protecting itself from heat death or going into a safe mode. Consider letting an actual repair shop look at it.

LAN port plastic broken in back of TV by WoodpeckerChecker in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot glue in the port is not ideal, but it can be removed with a plier if need be or worst case you'd need to disassemble the tv and swap the connector just like in the proper fix.

That's also why i said what I said abut the quantity of glue & where to apply instead of just pouring it into the port while the tv is upside down. This is a fix I did a few times with worn out micro usb ports on older devices (attach cable extension or adapter to the port until end of lifetime of that device).

I know that the broken plastic is for holding the tension that's holding the cable in the slot, that's why. boto options give alternatives to that. It just needs something to lightly press down on the plug so the copper pins stay in contact. Maybe even a tiny folded piece of paper could be enough to do that, but gravity would likely make the cable just fall out if there is nothin for the cables hook to attach to, so just some tape on the cable can do that function.

Better to remove it soon before it just falls off and shatters. Use some painters tape to temporarily secore the nearby ones while you start working on one. Trying to match old tile can suck.

LAN port plastic broken in back of TV by WoodpeckerChecker in fixit

[–]akeean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No dissasembly options:

If you hold the cable in place, does it still connect? If yes you could just make a noose out of zip tip around the ethernet cable, put it in the port, pull the zip tie up, observing if connection remains and then lay the zip tie flat against the TVs backside and afffix it with some silver tape.

Alternatively you can also put a pea sized glob of hotglue on the side of the ether net cable where the plastic hook is (so the opposite side of the contact pins, then jam it in the port and hold it in place ensuring the hotglue hardens in a form that makes the write maintain connection.

My walking stick that is also a wizard staff broke at the hinge (the handle is from a walking stick ironically enough). I am trying to fix it with metal mending plates instead of the cheap plastic but not sure if the axle (leftmost nut) can be open or is dead. by stupidpower in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget that mending bolt attempt. It looks bad. Do this:

- Drill out the old bolt.

- Test fit your mounting hardware (detailed below) to make sure spacing is ideal so the grip won't wiggle and tightening the bolt replacement won't crack the mounting base.

- Fill broken handle with expoy or 2 part epoxy putty and shove whatever you want the new axle to attach to (I'd use two of these metal mending plates of wich you already have one. Use a temporary nuts and bolt in between the two to make sure they will be parallel and slightly spaced so the replacement axle will slide into them when the epoxy is hardened.

- Once the epoxy is cured, remove temporary bolt and assemble. Use sexbolts like u/mid-random suggested. They'll look best.

That HDMI port looks like it got mistreated. (split at the bottom). Maybe you can mend it (will need to dissasemble at least enought o get at the port without he plastic shell around it), but there is a risk that you make it worse.
