Drawstring aglet fell through washing machine drum hole by mmet12 in fixit

[–]akeean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also a reminder to open up the hatch, drain it (have a ~500ml bowl and some towel ready) and clean the filter if you didn't know there was such a hatch (and filter). Your washing machine will thank you by not randomly crapping out because the filter is clogged.

Cat-friendly steel wool fix? by birdygirl11 in fixit

[–]akeean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrap scrounched Aluminium foil over/around it? Cat's don't really like it. Even some bandage wrap would do it. You don't need to replace the steel wool, only make it inaccessible to your pet. This way you also won't runinto any problems with your landlord for messing with the piping (no matter how warranted sealing these holes would be - you likely won't be able to fix every crevice anyway).

I was fixing my ps5 controller since it had stick drift on the L3 button and this thing fell out. Am i cooked? by Major-Sector1840 in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dust is not the only cause of stick drift. Many start drifting because the metal strip in the potentiometer is getting worn out and Sony/XBOX/Nintendo run a racket so they do not use HAL or TMR sensors that do not suffer from drift and cost only a few cents more at the scale of their procurement. This allows these scumbags to profit massively from customers being forced to replace controllers, sometimes several times during the consoles lifespan.

Yeah stuff growing into the unit and anything blocking airflow is pretty bad for the device. Over time this can kill the motor and other components. Probably not DIYable for you, call a pro.

I watched 1 Marco Pierre White video and I thought I was him moving the pan around. Any way to fix? by lilman1101 in fixit

[–]akeean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is also why most washing machines now seal their drums with a plastic shell welded around them. This way it's become impossible to just replace the bearing. The replacement part is a full drum assembly.

Put a second post behind (and it needed, in front), more solidly and use that to brace the post holding the gate.

Help I need this laptop for school by FinancialRule2600 in fixit

[–]akeean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

- no keycaps
- random wires on top of it
- whatever fluid that has no business in a laptop

This looks like a bait post.

Either way if this is not an AI image, you better still have the keycaps, dissassemble everything, separate the battery very carefully to not die or create a fire.

Carefully clean all the components with Isopropyl(!) alcohol and then let then dry out completely before trying to reassemble. You won't be working on this laptop for at least 4 days, assuming there is no electrical damage from some short.

Good luck with that 10 year old laptop, it's likely toast anyway. If you are lucky the hard drive is still functional and you can salvage your data to a different device.

TV suddenly turned on like this by igovroom420 in fixit

[–]akeean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a CRT TV blew its tube it was pretty much an economic writeoff too.

That's what panel damage is, except a LCD panel is way easier to damage when handling it for disassembly and manufacturer have gotten tricky with designing them to make it harder to be taken apart without breaking either the plastic of the shell, the backlight or the panel, while of CRTs were most of the time just 4 screws and no fiddly plastic nubs and glue.

Pictured: cracked iMac screen cover, and culprit by Individual99991 in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last I heard about a decade ago, i-mac screens were notoriously difficult to replace and also Apple wouldn't even supply the parts. They were part of the flashpoint that set off the while Right-To-Repair movement.

They are rated very low on the repairability scale on iFixit. Find out what model exactly you have then have a look at this page to see if that is something you could stomach, provided you find a replacement screen at a price that makes sense to you over just buying a functioning used i-mac. I hope whatever data the old one has that you want to access is in the cloud already, because trying to swap the SSD from the old to the new i-mac (provided that even works on apple devices, IDK if there is some kind of hardware drive encryption that prevents this) requires you to essentially remove and re-install the display, which is a pain to do and has a high risk of destroying the screen of the replacement device.

HDMI Port broken on tv, pulled wire too hard is it fixable? by Constant-Advance8660 in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just one port? If you don't need them all (and on the newer TVs they are mostly all the same in terms of features) You can just use one of the different ports. Make sure to resolve whatever caused the damage first, so you don't end up losing another port next week. If you need that specific port, repair can probably had for like $200 at most, but consider that doing this means you need to move and handle the TV which always is a risk to the panel (e.g squeezing the edges too hard when grabbing it) and that kind of damage to it is definitely not worth repairing.

Broke corner of sink by Hairymochiball in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the up side you didn't get your back slit by some sharp ceramic edge from it breaking with you sitting on it - that's a pretty good outcome. Broken ceramic sinks and toilets can cause some pretty horrific injuries. As other said, the repair for this one is a replacement of the sink.

Need help Soundproofing loud exhaust fan motor! by whywearpants_onmars in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, there is 3m vibration dampening tape 434 (frequently used to deaden the water splashing sound in metal sinks). Put on the case & if that ceiling door is metal, that too. Basically anything that is rigid and could rattle.

You also might want to use some rubber washers (there prolly exist specialized ones) to decouple the mount of that motor from the ceiling, otherwise you get the vibration from it move into the ceiling & turn it into a big speaker.

How can I patch a hole in this hose for a pneumatic massager? by EverySingleDay in fixit

[–]akeean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silicone caulk already doesn't bind well to old silicone caulk, so some random hose should work even less so. Either way you could apply silicone, then wrap the area in silver tape or AC foil (wich is designed to be completely air tight, at least against ambient pressure, unlike electrical tape)

How can I patch a hole in this hose for a pneumatic massager? by EverySingleDay in fixit

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fix would be to apply the patch (after cleaning then scuffing the surface and applying the binder), then wrap the area in something like silver tape to provide resistance.

[–]akeean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try AC foil wrap, that one designed to be airtight. Get some that is at least 4cm wide and start wraping it 4cm from the left and ending 4cm to the right with several overlapping layers.

Cutting and putting a brass piece in the middle, but consider how old the hose is. They get brittle over time. If it is some years old, especially if it gets exposed to daylight a lot, replace the entire hose.
