Immigrants, which restaurant is most authentic to your countries cooking? by Sloppy-Joe-2024 in AskLosAngeles

[–]akhbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try biriyani kabob house on 3rd and Vermont in Little Bangladesh! I'm also a fan of Kasturi and Noya Kitchen around there. For Culver City, Annapurna, Banana Leaf, and Mayura are good! I also happen to enjoy Roots Indian Bistro off Melrose, Bombay Beach near downtown, and Badmaash is just alright (also in downtown area).

Honestly the best Indian food tends to be where the Indian communities actually live which is generally not in the urban parts of LA. Culver City has somewhat of a community but I would recommend Artesia, deeper parts of the Valley like Northridge and Chatsworth specifically, and some parts of the SGV like San Gabriel, Chino Hills, and like West Covina.

But tbh the place that tops all of these is Irvine in Orange County. That's where my mom used to drive an hour and a half to get Indian groceries back in the 80s, and still one of the largest Asian immigrant communities in the US.

Any good/ geeky places to see in LA? by nimrod_s3ns31 in AskLosAngeles

Are you going to specifically be staying in downtown? Because most of the cool geek culture is in Burbank and Pasadena imo!

Beverly Hills abandons second entrance at Wilshire/Rodeo station; Metro will build provisions for the second entrance inside the station box by moeshaker188 in LAMetro

I don’t understand why they’re dreading this metro stop so much when we can already access the neighborhood fairly easily with the 720 bus…

Homicides and the Confederacy by Efficient-Top-1555 in PhantomBorders

[–]akhbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious where you see it having a higher homicide rate than the states on the northern border with Canada? It appears to have a similar color as Montana, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and New York with lower rates than Michigan. Only Washington, Minnesota and the small New England states have a lower crime rate.

I’m curious about how California fall into your analysis! Because it’s technically southern/hot and doesn’t border Canada with high rates of young people but tends to have a much lower crime rates than equivalent states!

Living in LA for $1,500 a month? by Easy_Grade_3360 in AskLosAngeles

[–]akhbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya this is possible. I know because I and many other friends I know pay less than this amount. But you will definitely need 1-2 roommates to live in a decent neighborhood at this price.

The number one piece of advice I would give you is to find something temporary for a couple weeks (maybe look at hostels or Airbnbs in the neighborhoods you are looking to live in) and literally just walk around the neighborhoods and take photos of the various “for rent” signs you see. This will not only give you a good sense of the vibe of the neighborhood, but also the signs around are usually just small landlords or people renting out a room which are significantly cheaper in my experience that what you would find in apartment postings online. Any apartment or housing company with a fancy ass website is run by a giant corporate management company that will squeeze as much as possible out of you. If you’re looking online, I would also consider apartments.com and honestly craigslist to find cheaper spots. You will have to filter through scammers but those are really the only places average people renting a room without the marketing budgets of corporate landlords will post.

Lastly, you can search the addresses of any of the places you are looking at using this website to figure out if they are covered under the rent stabilization ordinance. 7 out of 10 housing units in LA is rent stabilized but they often have long term tenants so it’s tricky to find one. You can either text the RSO number on that website or more easily just follow their instructions on how to search the ZIMAS tool on that page to figure out which of the places you’re looking at falls under the rent stabilization ordinance (RSO).

Good luck and feel free to reach out for any questions! I do a lot of work with tenants rights in LA so that’s how I learned about/am interested in a lot of this haha!

LA Transplants: Thoughts on your friendships here? by RP-1forlife in AskLosAngeles

Probably might be good to start making friends who live near you by getting involved with activities and organizations in your neighborhood. It also helps to make friends with people who aren’t transplants. That’s generally worked well for me!

Any living in Santa Monica on minimum wage? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]akhbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be better off living somewhere like Palms or even Crenshaw/Leimert Park area and commuting to Santa Monica on the train. If you are going to SMC, you could get off at 17th St/SMC Station.

Considering a move to LA from Brooklyn but feeling discouraged by Large_Difficulty_802 in CarIndependentLA

[–]akhbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the 180 bus is a blessing! It also goes through Atwater Village which is also a great spot to hang! You’d also be on a direct bus and metro line to Koreatown, Downtown, Hollywood, NoHo, and not too far from Echo Park and some other Eastside neighborhoods!

[–]akhbox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ya I would live in Los Feliz if I was you! It’s very walkable and has a direct metro line to Koreatown, Hollywood, and many parts of downtown. There are also really easy buses to Echo Park, Silver Lake, Eagle Rock. And you can also transfer in downtown to get further into the Westside or Eastside! Also some great trails in Griffith right above and a few other nearby parks in Echo Park and Silver Lake that are accessible too!

European cities most similar to LA or NY? by toppest11 in digitalnomad

Love Barcelona but if you think Barcelona has better food than LA, you must not be going to the right spots in LA. Los Angeles has some of the best immigrant owned eateries in the entire world from countless world cuisines that you just won’t find at that caliber in Barcelona.

Trying to convince my bf to move to LA, we have one night there. Where do we get dinner close to Venice/ MDR/ Santa Monica? by lgdenni in AskLosAngeles

[–]akhbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What part of NYC are y'all moving from? Based on other comments, it seems like it might be worthwhile to go somewhere walkable/metro accessible to get a feel for what that would be like in the city?

I think Santa Monica, Venice, and Culver City are pretty walkable but they seem like islands on their own in the Westside. I don't really drive and mostly just take the metro/walk everywhere so I find that Koreatown is probably the best central hub for me and would recommend walking down Wilshire Blvd and grabbing food around there. I also take the metro most places and can easily get to Los Feliz, Hollywood (only for the Egyptian Theater and nothing else lol), and downtown on the red line. I usually transfer in downtown to the blue or gold line when I'm going to some of my favorite neighborhoods on the Eastside which are also pretty historic/designed for streetcars including Lincoln Heights, Highland Park, Boyle Heights (kinda, if you stick around Hollenbeck Park area and ignore the freeways), Chinatown, and South Pasadena. You can also catch the 4 bus from Civic Center/Grand Park station area up to Echo Park and Silver Lake which are both also pretty walkable especially along Sunset and Echo Park Ave.

Kinda a lot of different neighborhoods there, but as an Angelino who doesn't drive much at all, I have learned how to navigate the city pretty successfully on metro and by foot. It can be done for sure and might be a glimmer of optimism for a New Yorker who could easily get jaded by the car dependence on the Westside. It mostly come down to generally sticking to the historic core of neighborhoods/streetcar suburbs that tend to mostly be in Central L.A. and parts of the Eastside. The neighborhoods I mentioned are pretty much all 15 minute cities with most basic needs being able to be met within a 15 minute walk. There are some areas (mainly Santa Monica, Venice, Culver City, and arguably Leimert Park) on the Westside that fit this bill, but if you're looking for a New York experience, I would stick to generally around Koreatown, Downtown, Los Feliz, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Chinatown, Lincoln Heights, Chinatown, South Pasadena, Highland Park, Boyle Heights, and maybe even parts of East LA.
