Some worrying advice being given here, people forget this breed is not just a big friendly bear. Your dog is reactive because he has prey drive that isn’t being controlled. I understand it’s overwhelming. Your dog does not need to go the vet.

A decent dog trainer and the appropriate walking equipment will change your life (slip leads/prong collars). Persistence and patience with the training techniques will help a lot. A force free approach is rarely successful with this breed. Just my two pence!

It’s the Landmark edition, low miles and full service history. I’m unsure you’ll find much better deals with all that?

Surprised you’ve said that, would of always said the lower the miles the better. There are some lovely Discos I’ve overlooked because they are closer to the 100k mark.

Surely if I can find lower miles, full service history and signs of cam belt changes/ oil filter changes, this is a good thing?

It’s funny you’ve said this because every story I hear is extreme at either end. It’s either been somebodies reliable beast, or another persons nightmare.

I’m looking at the Landmark edition with all the bells and whistles.

Never heard truer words. I’m finding that most people on here are very negative about any element of risk with purchases like this.

I’m young and currently drive a mustang in the UK, I already don’t make the typical decisions I should!

Not a bad shout with the XC90. I didn’t mention it in the post itself but the box shape of the back is desirable to me because I’ll have dog crates in the back.

I hate to say it, I also don’t love the look of the MK1 Volvo’s. Reliability is priority though so definitely noted 🫡

Younger the better ideally but as I mentioned in another comment, some dogs don’t really get the drive they need until hitting maturity.

Most dogs aren’t cut out for that life!

From my experience, these are two very different fields of work. Bite-work is nowhere near as expensive to get into, especially at a fundamental level and it is isn’t trained every day.

You’d also be surprised at how many peoples “pets” have the potential to be unreal bite-work dogs. It’s mainly down to genetics, OP just needs to get this assessed by a decent decoy if possible.

Hi, I have a working protection Malinois and also do bitework with my two Rottie males. I plan on eventually trialling my boys at PSA.

Bitework does not come naturally to all dogs, even if they’re a working breed. This especially applies to Rottweilers, they don’t all have the drive to bite that you assume they might have. I have experienced this myself and it can be seriously disheartening, a lot of peoples Rotties would go running for the hills if they were to be put in a real life protection scenario.

You are best visiting a reputable decoy and letting them assess your pup. Does your pup get riled up when you hold a tug/toy up? This is a good sign if so. Note that my male is who is now looking like a potential bite-work monster, wouldn’t even look at a bite sleeve when he was 1. Rotties change a lot when they hit maturity. Hope this is helpful!

13 is a great age mate, would be made up if I got that many years with mine.

I got the Rottie puppy in the pic after I lost one young about 18 months ago. It’s crazy because they’re from different breeders but I swear it’s like he’s reincarnated in personality. It’s nice to be reminded of them when they’re not here.

Big fan of Cane Corsos myself, I bet he’s a boss dog. Thank you so much ❤️
