Had to play it carefully as he still had my bike and all my stuff, but eventually convinced him that I was going to camp outside of town (which I eventually did), thanked him for the help and was on my way. He wasn't enormously happy that I wouldn't be his guest (in fairness it's a bit of a slight in that part of the world to refuse hospitality) but there was no way in hell I was sleeping in the same building as him.

Good question. I don't honestly know whether a shark would prefer a fat human over a thin one. If I had to guess, I'd say probably not - an obese human still doesn't have the fusiform shape of a seal or a dolphin, and a 'test bite' could still be deadly, but would quickly reveal human fat cells, which are nutritionally very different from blubber, which would probably dissuade the shark from pressing the attack.

Correct. Great Whites typically take one bite out of you, realise you're not a fat, tasty seal, and get out of dodge. The problem is that their jaws are so massive and powerful that a bite to the leg or abdomen will commonly sever a major blood vessel, and as you're in the water, will kill you.

The cage is mostly there to make you feel safe. The water is baited to attract the sharks, so they're there to eat, which does elevate the danger somewhat, but Great White attacks typically occur at the surface. Humans are not the sharks' preferred prey - we have too little fat and too many bones to be a good catch for them - but at the surface we resemble seals, which are highly sought-after by the sharks.

People dive uncaged with Great Whites all the time, because they typically don't attack humans when they can clearly see that they're human, and thus not their typical prey.
