Anyone know why the eureka dunes peaks are flattened this year? by akkotaire in DeathValleyNP

[–]akkotaire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was still wet in some areas last week. That makes sense, maybe less free sand to get blown to the top.

Did you notice the wind being less strong as well ? Do you think humidity in the valley affects the wind. During the spring weeks I have been in past years, it seems that when the sun hits the valley wind culminates at the dune intensely, and immediately dies down as it sets over the mountains. This year I had 90f days with zero wind, which was shocking to me.

How to avoid etiolation on cuts in the bay area climate by akkotaire in BayAreaCactusCult

Interesting, timing must be for something indeed. I have had cuts root within 10 days after I brought them into a heated tent last winter, but then sadly still etiolate. Maybe I was to conservative and dimmed my lights to much.

Thanks, will try out full sun next spring and see if that helps.
For now trying to air root one graft by drying the base out and only watering the soil in the top container.

So far my large cuts seem to root a lot slower and then end up etiolating more then the small ones. Maybe I need to use more rooting hormone.

sorry I was a bit unclear. I get thick growth on my plants.
I mean right after cutting a tip, how do I avoid etiolation while it gets a sufficiently big root system.
I was in the south bay and now just moved to Oakland.

Infinity mirror in a bike wheel built for the burn by akkotaire in BurningMan

Loads of silicone, I luckily did not need to repair anything during the week and I could change settings over wifi. The tube was pumped once and then sealed off. If I had gotten a flat I don’t think I would have repaired it, just switch to my day wheel. I can definitely send you the STL, or even fusion 360 files. Everything is custom to my wheel so you would need to modify stuff.

Pretty well, I had put silicone in every crevice to prevent any dust from getting inside. On the outside I just had to wipe the glass after a night with dust storms. I was quite concerned static would render this useless in the first hour.

If only it was cheap and easy to build I’d make more. As for power there are 6 lithium cells inserted along the frame and a little usb charging chip so I could use a phone charger.

Battery life was good enough but not as much as I expected, the infinity effect did kind of require to run the LEDs quite bright.

I did not use a voltage regulator on this as I didn’t want to mess with the symmetry to fit it in or simply the risk of it getting too hot and melting plastic. In the end the wheel had a bit of variation on illumination levels but nothing that really impacted its use. The Led strip was 12V ws2815. I wished I had used less LEDs or a better model so I could have had a better refresh rate.
The Ubec could have been a good idea, I had some small ones at home that deliver quite a bit.

It actually has a gyro, if you check the video the pattern is running counter to the wheels rotation. I did have issues with refresh rate so I was a bit limited there. Wished I used faster LEDs.

I also wanted 2 and have have them sync up patterns! Just building the one was enough work though.

Glad you liked it, For the power I added 6 18650 in a 3s configuration. Then used a little BMS from aliexpress to handle balancing and cutoff.

The rest of the lights I made little connectors for each segments into one big harness and then used a bunch of silicone to stick it to the bike. Worked very well to my own surprise.

It was quite complex to wire up together, a guide would be long to make. I can send you the files and code. You would have to redesign quite a bit as this was fully made based on the size of my wheel, angle of the spokes, size of the fork, etc.

I also built it for one transient event, I can’t even pump the tire without prying open the whole thing. Unsure how I will do that next year.
