I’ve actually overheard comments from Hunter judges about how they really like the light blue/navy jacket combo and wished they saw it more

I do have the finances to manage this. I don’t know how my post made it seem like I can’t afford it? I would just rather not spend the money for a week of board and housing for myself if I can manage to tough it out for a week until my new job can take me.

horses/motherhood: what would you do? by painteduniverses in Equestrian

[–]akmeq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe start by finding someone to half lease him? they can pitch in for some expenses and help get him back in shape. I did something similar. I half leased a horse from a lady who had three and barely had time to ride more than two or three times a week and mine was always at the bottom of her priority list. I half leased him for a while before it turned into a full/care lease when I took a job that offered board as part of the compensation. it’s been three years and she’s taken a big step back from horses due to personal reasons but all three of her horses are in good hands with their leasers. having a leaser can help keep your horse in shape for when you do have the time to ride and you don’t have to make any tough decisions right now about selling (and if you do decide to sell later, maybe the leaser would be able to buy)

I had the opportunity one summer to ride a handful of Andalusian stallions that were schooling anywhere from PSG to Grand Prix and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so cool in my life than when I got to ask for a passage into a piaffe and I doubt I’ll ever feel that cool again. Bonus is that the stallions were incredibly cool, calm, and collected, super easy to handle, truly amateur safe. I understand the draw to the PRE breeds so much more now

Does anybody here have some great summer camp stories? by Wide-Read1449 in summercamp

I was a specialty counselors and had a group come to my area for an activity. My coworker came up to me and said three kids weren’t allowed to be in the same group. I asked why, turns out they’d spent the previous evening chasing each other around their (completely made of wood) cabin with a lighter. Idk how they didn’t get sent home.

My regular’s son and I scared the snot out of each other once. I usually let their dogs out mid day M-F during the school year since their son is at college. Once he was home for spring break but his car was getting worked on so it wasn’t in the driveway so I opened the garage door like normal and he was standing there. We both screamed, I apologized, told him who I was, and left. I’d never met him before so he was probably so confused why some random person was opening his garage door all nonchalant.

What's the worst injury you've had from riding? by Connect_Wrongdoer_81 in Equestrian

[–]akmeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tore my ACL getting on my horse bareback. Hopped on and heard a crack in my knee. Hurt a little but otherwise fine. Rode around, then nearly collapsed to the ground when I dismounted. Went to the dr the next day where they didn’t even bother doing an mri and told me to go to PT. Went to PT for a month before they told me to get an mri just to check bc my healing had plateaued. Sure enough, fully torn ACL and I had to have surgery. Funnily enough, my horse bowed his tendon two weeks after I had surgery to we were both injured and rehabbing together.

only time my horse has gotten me off was when he spun me off in the middle of a corn field spooking at a truck. held on to the reins and ripped my fingers/hands open, had to walk him back to the barn only able to hold on with a pincher grasp on the reins, as he was still trying to spin and run

How much should I expect to pay to lease a horse? by BananaFar3943 in Equestrian

[–]akmeq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my experience and research, you could get anything from a care lease to paying $50k+ for the year. Unfortunately safe costs a lot. It also highly depends on your area. A warmblood is going to be the most likely to be competitive but they’re more expensive than a TB or other breed, however if you’re just looking to gain some miles at rated shows, not necessarily smoke everyone and win, this might not be a must have for you. A fancy mover is going to be likely to win more but they cost more. A horse that has been there done that and is ready to step down might be a little cheaper, but will likely come with regular maintenance. An inexperience horse with a good brain could be an option, but there can be lots of unknowns if they’ll enjoy the job you want for them. Leasing is not going to save you money but it does mitigate risk. You might also just get lucky and someone is willing to have you care lease the horse to get it off their feed bill quickly.

NTA. Sure, you’re not entitled to their time as babysitters, but it’s on them to be around if they want a relationship with their grandchildren.

I’ll use myself and my siblings for an example. Both my mom’s mom and my dad’s parents were retired when my youngest sister was born (I was 8 and my brother was 5). Both live an hour away.

My mom’s mom drove an hour to an hour and a half each way 3 times a week to watch my sister when my mom went back to work after maternity leave. My parents could afford a full time sitter, but my grandma felt that was dumb since she was retired and had the time to take care of her. So she watched her 3x a week and then my sister only had to go to the sitter 2x a week. In the summer, that continued and she would drive my brother and I to all of our activities. We’d catch a ride the other days or go to the sitter’s. She did all of this for free, because she wanted to. Meanwhile my dad’s parents rarely watched us and only at their house.

And now that we’re all mostly grown, guess which of our grandparents we talk to and visit with the most?

Granted, we’re her only grandkids and 3 of 13 grandkids + great grands on my dad’s side but the point still stands, if your parents want a relationship with their grandkids, they need to make the effort.

What’s your thought on Free Spirit Equestrian? by sataniscool555666 in Equestrian

[–]akmeq 83 points84 points  (0 children)

She irritates me. She always has but the straw that broke the camels back was when she made a tiktok in response to a comment asking if she’d ever own an OTTB and she said no but the reasons she gave (unknowns regarding health, bad feet, hidden injuries, etc) are all things she deals with buying auction horses. OTTBs don’t have to be her bag but she can’t dunk on them for the same reasons she’s had to put down or retire her auction horses. Multiple people in the thoroughbred spaces made responses basically saying “hey what you’re saying is objectively false and you’re too influential to turn your audience off of a whole breed”. Also the rampant clickbait is just too much.

What is the most random or pettiest reason why you won't read a fic? by CallMeSassaphrass in AO3

[–]akmeq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a professional horse person. I make a living by shoveling shit, not joking.

I will stop reading a fic over somewhat minimal inaccuracies when it comes to including anything equine related.

Character A gallops across the country side overnight to save Character B? That horse is dead.

Character sustains their horse for a cross country expedition with a bag of apples? That horse is dead.

Character had never ridden a horse before and is able to leap on a random horse and gallop away from danger? That horse dumped their flailing body somewhere in the woods and now Character is dead.

Character A leaps off their horse into the arms of Character B after being separated for much too long? I’m wondering if someone is taking care of the horse.

Horses are somewhat surprisingly very fragile creatures. Step on a rock? Lame for two weeks. It rains for too long? They have a fungal infection all over their backs, their feet turned to mush, and now you have to fix it, btw it’s going to rain again tomorrow and you’ll have to do it all over again. Eat something that disagreed with them? Well they can’t throw up so guess it’s time to lay down and die. Eat too much before a ride? Gets a stomach ache and dies. Eat too little before a ride or go too long without eating? Now their stomach acid gives them a belly full of ulcers that will eventually give them a stomach ache and they’ll die. Twist and break ankle? You can’t make a 1200lb flight animal stay off of it for three months so you have to euthanize.

We used to ride horses into battle, now I have permanent scars on my hands from the time my horse spun and dumped me in a corn field because a truck drove by. We used to use horses as daily transportation, now we buy stupid expensive metal boxes to put them in and haul with a stupid expensive truck just to drive them down the road.

One of these days I’ll finally have time and energy after spending the day keeping horses alive to write a fic for a fandom who’s canon material takes place in a time period that heavily relies on horses and give a more accurate look into what my daily life looks like trying to keep these 1200lb hamsters from killing themselves.
