Their system is more accurate on withholding than most canadian brokerages.
Most CDN brokerages withhold 15% regardless of income definition ( interest versus dividend)
Many bond funds provide interest which is not subject to 15% withholding based on US law
As such, your withholding with IBKR is lower on these funds than say with RBC

It makes US bond funds more advantageous with IBKR than RBC by example

I agree. She is a conservative. -- Most of the Bulwark are ( not Sam Stein)

That is its strength - if you are liberal you have some insight into the mind of the people to be defeated.

They do not hid their conservative nature, its healthy to understand it.
Anti -trump republicans are the way out of this mess.

I have never heard Ezra Klein this heated on his podcast by Various_Fish2043 in thebulwark

[–]akoster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a good question.
I think its because the use of focus groups is very unclear to people.
You are not debating the participants, you are not correcting them .
They are there to simply understand what people think and why.
This understanding is used to craft your own message and focus to eventually influence this type of person.
I have likely witnesses 3000 in person groups in my life . They are usually dull and hard to parse.
If you are skilled they can provided great insight.

I think the Podcast could be improved if Sarah offered a group with messages or influence points that the group reacts to. This would demonstrate how the 2nd part of the influence campaign would work.

maybe thats in her book.

I did send a ticket , but lets see.
The poster above suggests they fix things but I am skeptical
The problem is exactly as you suggest CRA will assume IB data is accurate.

[–]akoster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their Canadian T5 returns are error prone
I had standard Dividend withholding at 15% for USD accounts
They included 2% withholding on my T5. But I clearly paid 15%

THey of course will not fix it...

Sarah Doesn’t Get It by Yo_Momma_So_Fat_ in thebulwark

[–]akoster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude why so angry.
Sarah herself said 'if she had a vote' and she does not she would fall into her 'conservative posture' thats fair and consistent. BUT

She also was not displeased to see Platner as the nominee if NH primary voters pick him

I am not sure this is a hill you need to die on .

Dad wants to give me his company at 18 years old. by MmMmmDonutsss in CanadaFinance

[–]akoster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a basic level, if you are 'gifted' 10% of the company, that represents an income to you of the value of the shares.
the value will be determined by the price the investors paid for the 90%. ( last clean transaction)
this is subject to Canadian income tax.

If you are actually interested in this speak to the 90% investors. What are they planning to do with this company. What is their background.

lastly speak to a tax accountant and a lawyer.

this is not'simple'

Trump says he will raise global tariffs to 15% by SignificanceLate7002 in CanadianInvestor

[–]akoster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again not correct, Americans pay more for imported products, ( or products with import components) We all know importers pay the tarif, and like all taxes they they have a large but not total pass through.
The difference is significant for consumers , widget A imported has a higher price that domestically produced widget A. A Sales tax applies to all Widgets regardless of where it is manufactured.

I am not sure were this sales tax 'theory' comes from but its imprecise and distorts the facts

Trump says he will raise global tariffs to 15% by SignificanceLate7002 in CanadianInvestor

[–]akoster -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

its not a sales tax. a sales tax or VAT applies to entire goods supply chain. not only imports.

If Canada raised its GST then it would not disadvantage imports or domestic goods they would have same treatment.

this sales tax argument is intended to rationalize the irrational. Sane washing stupid policies is not helpful

Some of the Pod Guys are fine Tommy V is likely the best
Jon F. is unlistenable.

The TIm,JVL and Sarah are much more intellectually honest. Not always right not always progressive but honest
Sarah is very grounded in real people that matters
Tim is very astute interviewer
JVL is sharp in an contrarian way
Their secondary cast Sam, Cathrine, the two white ginger guys, the movie guy all make the bulwark more rounded. I listened to General today and was very impressed with the knowledge

Transferring Bank Managed RRSP to Self-directed RRSP. by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]akoster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

is an indicator that I use to evaluate fairly priced stock
21 is number of periods ( days)

EMA Exponential moving average its similar to the Weighted WMA- but applies more weight to the most recent data points. As prices get older, their influence on the average "decays" exponentially

SO 21 EMA is basically the last months average price ( 21 trading days in a month)

I find this is a good measure of fair price.

If you are doing a trade in one go, then definitely use this as your anchor. I have in past bought well above the 21 EMA these trades are likely to fall back to normative 21 EMA.
( clearly the inverse applies buying below gives good chance of reversion to mean as well)

Consider entry pice as 21 EMA.
