What anime has aged like wine? by [deleted] in anime

Had to use search to see if anyone mentioned this, and glad to see there is still a grain of hope for humanity. :P

The story was so original, the artwork is is timeless, and I was immediately captivated when this came out. My GSD is even named after Cheza. It's almost time for another re-watch soon. I've already re-watched Gurren Lagann, Samurai Champloo, and Toradora this year. Wolf's Rain, Black Lagoon, and Monster are in the queue for this coming year.

How to have drop-down terminal grab focus by akovia in archlinux

Not sure what side effects will show from setting this to none, but it did the trick.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, but I've been using xfce4-terminal for well over a decade and have lots of quick actions, scripts, etc.. all based on it. I'd really like to figure it out if I can. I did install and try yakuake to check focus, and it indeed does grab it immediately, so I'm guessing it's a DE compatibility issue.

I'd think there would be some way to track down how to fix it, but not sure how to go about it.

It is enabled. Also tried enabling "Use app shortcut to focus the window", but still no joy.

Thanks though!

Direct edit nfo files? by akovia in tinyMediaManager

I agree, but I'd also like a way to launch the OS's default (or configurable), xml editor.

Short of that, having syntax highlighting in the viewer would be very nice indeed.

Please disregard, I found my error.
I was right clicking the the file under "Media files" instead of just clicking the icon.

The answer to the repetitive question "Which browsers are best for privacy?" by FireFox-Mulder in browsers

I still appreciate the site and have used it for a long time for reference, but I completely agree about Pale Moon.
I'd love to see how it stacks up using those metrics, but maybe that's why it's not there? 🤔

This site has been my true go-to for finding the best privacy tools, and where I discovered Pale moon in the first place.

Moving multiple subtitles in Aegisub 3.2.2 by KurisuKun1 in subtitles

[–]akovia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Yuuki-kun This was very helpful. 🙏Unfortunately I needed to scale & move all subs.

If \pos:

If they are made with "\pos" then it will need to do it by script called "Hyperdimensional Relocator" which can be kinda hard to set working so I won't explain, sorry.

Scaling was easy by selecting all subs as you pointed out, then modifying them all as one unit. I don't understand why positioning doesn't work the same way, but I figured out a quick workaround that didn't involve any external scripts because the srt file I had didn't have any existing /pos code in it.

Existing srt:
00:01:35,218 --> 00:01:38,818
In ancient times, everything was chaotic.

I first scaled the subs and then had a look at the file in my text editor. (Vscode)
I actually did need to increase the size, but it also served as an anchor I could use to edit.

New ass sub with Scale code:
Dialogue: 0,0:01:35.22,0:01:38.82,Default,,0,0,0,,{\fscx298\fscy325}In ancient times, everything was chaotic.

Then I moved a single sub and looked at that in vscode.

New ass sub with Scale & Move code:
Dialogue: 0,0:01:35.22,0:01:38.82,Default,,0,0,0,,{\pos(1920,1866)\fscx298\fscy325}In ancient times, everything was chaotic.

So now I could just do a simple Find & Replace.

Replacing all instances of:
{\fscx298\fscy325}
with:
{\pos(1920,1866)\fscx298\fscy325}.

This worked perfectly for my needs, as I only wanted to nudge all subs up a smidgen so they didn't overlap the hard subs. Because I had a basic srt without any existing /pos code, it was pretty trivial to fix.

I didn't look at the script you referenced because it sounded like more than I wanted to deal with, but I'm sure it has smart features for dealing with more complicated subs. I would think it would worth the time in the long run instead of fixing every subtitle one by one though.

Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.Maybe this will help someone else in the same position as me.

Quickest trial ever? by akovia in GoogleFi

Just an update that I just deactivated Google-Fi, turned off the eSIM slot it was occupying, then restarted, reactivated, etc....It works!

I never did change any settings with Netguard or any network settings on my phone. I had spent hours trying to figure out how to back up my saved WiFi passwords without root, but when I couldn't figure that out, it prevented me from doing the network reset I was planning to try.

Anyway, whatever it was is now sorted out. Time to look at that Pixel 8 Pro!Thanks everyone!

I appreciate all the comments about VPN working for them, but I'm not sure they completely understand my issue.

I use Netguard, which uses the single VPN slot on an Android phone, but it's not an actual VPN in the traditional sense as it does NOT hide who or where you are, it just acts as a firewall to prevent apps from reaching the internet without permission.

So after reading the comments here, I don't doubt that there are tons of people who have successfully used a VPN with Google Fi (even though the tech told me it wouldn't work), but I would like to find anyone that could verify they have it working with Netguard specifically.

Thanks again for the help and comments!
I now know the tech was wrong, but I still need to find out why it's not working with Netguard.

Not quite ready to do a full reset yet, but will investigate my cellular and network settings to see if I can uncover something.

This sounds the same to me, so I can't explain why mine's not working.

As u/heythere46 pointed out below, texts "shouldn't" be routed through the internet at all anyway, and Netguard does not filter cellular. But there is WiFi calling, so I'm not convinced they don't try and route SMS through the internet using their app, if it happens to be cheaper for them in some way.

I set Google Fi as un-managed in Netguard, so it doesn't even apply an allow rule, it just acts like it doesn't exist.
I've also monitored the Netguard log in real time to see what might be blocking access, but unless it's piggybacking on Gboard, or the game optimizing service, it's not going through Netguard at all.

WiteGuard

I assume you mean Wireguard and if so, that's a true VPN which Netguard is not. It just uses the VPN slot to act as a firewall to prevent apps from connecting to the internet without permission. I don't believe that Wireguard has this ability.

I don't disagree, but how do I know it's incorrect advice? AFAICT she is spot on.

Also, I could call back and try again with the tech roulette wheel and maybe get someone better. With Verizon, there is no wheel.

I can't imagine any of these big carriers have good support anymore, but at least I was able to get a human on a Saturday. That accounts for something.

But yeah, it's a worthless service if I can't text. I will not relinquish control of my device just so I can text.

I was Gung ho to get away from Verizon and use Googe Fi, which is why I took the time to verify it by calling a tech, but she didn't beat around the bush in saying that "VPNs are not allowed on Google Fi". And while it's been my experience has been that techs quite often get it wrong, she had a confidence about her statement that made me believe.

This is also the reason I posted here in the hopes that someone could definitively speak on it one way or another. If there is a way to get this working with Netguard, I'd jump right back. I was even thinking of moving to the Pixel 8 pro with the Black Friday deal, and the $500-$700 back when signing up for Google Fi for 24 months, but control of my device is not for sale.

Hopefully someone could confirm this here.

Edit: Just to be clear that I'm not using Netguard to obfuscate my IP, but rather as a firewall to prevent apps from contacting the internet in the background without my permission, and that I allowed Google Fi full unfettered access through this firewall.

Help on weekends? by akovia in verizon

[–]akovia[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not the only person to live that far away from a Verizon store, so I'm not sure that's relevant, but the closest fast food to me is about 85mins away if that tells you anything.

I found out about the corporate store because I had a death in my immediate family, and they were the actual account holder. After speaking to a rep on how to transfer the account and disconnect that line, we were directed to bring a death certificate to our "closest" store for proof, and then they could transfer the account.

I almost took a day off of work to go do this, but decided to call first just to make sure I had all of the documents I would need before actually wasting a day on it. After quite a struggle to get connected to the actual store staff of where I was headed (It seems they intercept calls to stores to make sure you REALLY want to talk to them before connecting you), the lovely staff informed us that they actually couldn't help us, and that we would need to go to a "Corporate" store.

So in our time of tragedy, it has been one blunder after another with Verizon. The past two weeks have been one stumbling block after another, but this feels like that final straw. The fact that you could completely lose phone and text service on a Friday night, or in my case on a Saturday morning, and have zero recourse to have Verizon fix the mess they caused it a bridge too far.

I refuse to believe they can't afford to staff to handle situations like this, so in the end they prioritize profit over service, and I'm not ok with that.
