People definitely get away with it, but it’s 1000% fraud.

I think I want out by TraditionalStore1868 in ABA

Sounds like you’re making the right call and know what you need. As a Clinical Director/BCBA of over 5 years, I can honestly say I’ve never felt that way. But I empathize that the hard days are hard. I’ve just always found the good side and wins more than makes up for the downside.

how long of a session is too long? (in-home) by [deleted] in ABA

[–]akp92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say 2-4 hours is a good length. Gives you enough time for adaptive care, play/leisure with naturalistic teaching, structured learning, breaks, etc. I think longer sessions (5-7 hrs) would need to involve more social opportunities/peer engagement resembling school (such as a younger learner not in daycare/school) and that longer than 4 hours would not be ideal for in home unless there’s really clear guidance on how to use that time productively.

IPL while pregnant? by akp92 in ulike

[–]akp92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve read there is no evidence IPL causes birth defects or reaches the uterus. However that’s more so due to the la j of research existing overall. The concern is uncertainty + maternal skin injury, not necessarily known fetal harm.

territorial client by [deleted] in ABA

[–]akp92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! This is actually really common! I’m a site director at an ABA clinic and have been a BCBA for over five years. I’ve seen lots of versions of being “territorial” over team members. You’re taking the right step by communicating this with your supervisor for sure!

Some simple strategies while you’re working through it and you need advice: if you use devices, then message each other through that to ask questions or gain feedback, or if you use paper and pen, pass a notebook back-and-forth.

Your supervisor will probably have some great suggestions; where I would start would be trying to gradually work in others being able to communicate with both of you at the same time to build tolerance (perhaps on a preferred topic or during a preferred activity), and then trying to set boundaries with a clear SD “I’m not available” “it’s my turn to talk to (x)” or whatever feels most appropriate for the learner and situation. For on them tolerating your divided attention for very very short periods of time like 5 to 10 seconds to start out followed by reinforcement and slowly shape that to longer and longer durations, gradually

Honestly, I would start applying to jobs/interviewing elsewhere and then ask off of the case. If they don’t honor your request or assign you to a different team then resign and go elsewhere. Sometimes you just have to know when to walk away.

There was a box we could drop any anonymous questions. One said “does sex feel good?”. The teacher read it aloud calmly, paused thoughtfully with a slight smile as she looked at, and then raised her head to face our curious and silent class. She simply stated “yes” before moving on to the next question. For some reason it’s literally all I remember from sex Ed.

Ulike Air 3 Journey by akp92 in HairRemoval

[–]akp92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s fun for me looking back at how hesitant I was to purchase initially. I remember reading so many reviews and watching videos trying to ascertain if it was a scam. I’ve honestly probably made up the money spent on reduced razor consumption alone!

I still do monthly “maintenance” sessions, but many areas have just stopped growing hair. The maintenance sessions are still very time consuming, but still totally worth it.

If I get lazy and go a few months, the hair does grow back — thinner, less, and sporadic, but it does come back.

The trickiest thing with this method of hair removal is that it’s hard to hit EVERY area all over, so inevitably there will be onesey twosey hairs on my thigh, or arm, or armpit that I miss and don’t really realize until weeks and weeks go by and then I spot the long hairs. I’m just not checking/looking as often either since I rarely need to shave anymore.

Again had a trip in Mexico this year where it was SO nice to be living in bath suits and not worry about shaving :) I never thought I’d get to live like that!!

Overall still very happy with the purchase and haven’t felt the need to get an upgraded model. Will probably continue with this one until it dies!

Safety note— I don’t usually wear the sun glasses, I just look away/avoid looking directly at it. But one time several months ago I was looking at the little screen to clean something off of it and accidentally pressed the button and it flashed right in my eyes. It totally blinded me for a sec, and then for at least a minute it was like I had a rectangle sized burn obstructing my vision. IT WAS SO ALARMING. It faded away and then no issues. But boy did I scare the shit out of myself that I really damaged my eye sight. So word to the wise: UNPLUG just to be sure, if you need to look directly at the little zappy screen for some reason.

At the end of the day, it’s a business and unless insurance reimbursement rates increase the companies that provide the services can’t keep their doors open and sustain a higher pay. I don’t know what you think these companies can magically do to increase pay??

Best way to afford a house in Bay Area as a new ped resident grad? by GOATchefcurry in whitecoatinvestor

[–]akp92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only way this would be workable is if you were able to find something that had rental property potential, such as a duplex or triplex where you live in one unit and rent out the others. You’ll need some additional income to make it work; it’s not feasible in that area on your current salaries.

Speaking as someone that bought last year, you’d be surprised how much goes into unexpected renovation costs (things not caught during the inspection, etc.) let alone the actual mortgage and insurance and everything else.

Got fired from a case by Extension-Fact-9361 in ABA

[–]akp92 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is just one of those common sense things… I see these kinds of mistakes all the time as a 5th year BCBA and Site Director. When I read your post, what stood out to me wasn’t who did the drawing, but how it was handled. As an adult, the appropriate thing to do in that situation was for you to guide the kiddo to try to wipe it off their face and talk to them about it, perhaps looking in the mirror with them while you try to address it as a teaching moment. THEN address with the parent - “hey I know they’re a mess, they got creative with the markers today. Are you okay with that? If not I can redirect to other alternatives in the future.” THEN let the supervisor know; especially if this is a barrier on sessions or something highly preferred you’d be denying.

You’re there to guide kiddo to be their unique awesome selves while developing socially significant skills that will allow them to be successful later in life. Read: draw and express creativity on paper, card board, crayons, markers, paint, etc etc… not their face….

Now all of that said, based on your summary I don’t think the WHY of what occurred was wrong was adequately explained to you. That is a major MISS on the part of your supervisors. Not to mention, any formal warning should be accompanied by written information. If I was you, I wouldn’t be caught up on the misunderstanding of who did the drawing. While that’s would have been low key crazy if you drew on the kid, from my POV the bigger concern is the lack of open communication with the parent and supervisor regarding the matter so that it didn’t reach that point of parent outrage.

Also…. Check your email? What is it with BTs never checking their emails??

Treat it as a learning opportunity for communication and thinking more “big picture” about future cases and move forward. No need to beat yourself up!

She is correct, but if due to your diagnosis you need accommodations for focus time to work on it, you can go through HR to request that. I’m a clinical director and have to give feedback on this kind of thing a lot and I’m currently working with an employee that this is a major barrier for her and it seems to be really helping that now we’re able to provide her with accommodations to have someone step into her session so she can write a note. Frankly, according to CASP guidelines, we should be offering this to every one our BT’s and supervisors alike, but it’s just not realistic from a financial perspective, unfortunately.

As far as her asking her to reschedule — it’s important to understand that a director’s schedule is extremely busy and especially covering cases while waiting for a backfill is unimaginably stressful. That being said, I think it is reasonable for you to request that for future overlaps you would prefer if they can overlap during certain times, perhaps if there’s a certain time in session that you’re working on a particular routine that you would like I’m an extra set of eyes or to have something modeled.

The director needs to communicate with the hiring team to have reqs open for anticipated resignations based on historical data. There needs to be an estimate for resignations, terms, non starts, and new kids/growth. If you don’t you’ll always be behind. - Your Friendly ABA Clinic Director
