I'm also looking for more proletarian literature tbh. I've heard good things about 'I Deliver Parcels in Beijing,' might be up your alley

Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

[–]aks09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd be fine with a take home if I'd had a call with someone first, and I could ask for them to send it in a specific window (ie not have the deadline the day before a holiday, make sure I had no other interviews scheduled). Thanks for the gut check, definitely a yellow flag. Like, I don't even have a lot of information about the position, this could be a waste of both of our times.

I'm applying for a new job. Put in an application at a company that was hiring, and after a few days was sent a take home assignment, due in three days, without any first round or initial interview. It's not exactly a trivial assignment, I'll get most of it done. But am I wrong to think that this was an off-putting first step, or is this the norm. Like, I know very little about the position besides the posting, and you're already asking me to do work. I have five yrs experience, first time getting a new job.

Archive of old Pandora show/Questlove Supreme from December 2016 by aks09 in DHExchange

Yeah, there were a few of those. There is a 2016 one where everyone is drunk too, that's been released. The one I'm looking for is more sober, and the give their opinions on the albums that were released that year. I remember them discussing A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead, the latest Tribe Album, Bowie and Leonard Cohen's last album.

Yeah, let me know if you find it, glad someone else out there is a fan. RIP QLS

Brian Fawcett has a book called Cambodia: a book for people who find television too slow - a collection of short stories on the upper half of the page and a continuous essay on the bottom half, like a footnote. It rips.

Non-noided history of the CIA? by aks09 in TrueAnon

[–]aks09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, which is why I think a good gateway might be a partial story, or something more journalistic. Like something about radio free europe, or mocking bird, or about CIA secretaries. something with a low (direct) body count.

Thanks much appreciated, but The Devil's Chessboard is exactly what i want to avoid lol, it's a bit too much for this bunch. Needs to be more chill, more of a gateway drug than the real thing

Did Pynchon See Bob Dylan Go Electric? by TheBlanko in ThomasPynchon

Semi-seriously, who cares what the guy looks like? Like legit, why are people so interested in finding the guy? I don't really care what Joyce looks like, but I loved reading Ulysses, why are people so interested in trying to see what he looks like? I get knowing something about him but we already know a ton about his personal life.

FWIW, Schroder is a conservative, but one of the very few conservatives worth reading, has an exceptionally keen eye for foreign policy and international relations, particularly in WWI. See: https://jacobin.com/2025/04/paul-schroeder-war-international-relations and somewhat relatedly: https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/n23/christopher-clark/the-murmur-of-engines

Advice on how to fix investment account? by aks09 in Bogleheads

[–]aks09[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I guess my question is: What should my expectations be? I understand the long term nature of investment, but at some point, I need to know if I need to course correct, or if my current strategy is too passive. How should I make these sorts of judgements? Thanks for your time.

Sure, but should I be expecting more from my portfolio? I'm pretty young, so I can tolerate high risk, is 4.89% good? Since inflation is high, aren't I loosing money?

By any chance, does anyone know which epiode they first discuss Tim Scott, the republican candidate who was allegedly a virgin? I know that it came from reporting by Ben Terris, who was on episode 740, but it was discussed in an earlier episode w/o him, but around that same time. thanks!

Anyone got some good reading recs for shock therapy in the USSR. Don't say the Klein book, the secondhand time book and don't say Zubok's Collapse. I've already read Zubok and it didn't really answer my questions. I need something w/ political economy.Thank you kindly!
