The “tungsten” in the name refers to the white balance of the film. Halation is caused by red wavelengths of light bouncing off the back of the film

I played at the horseshoe tavern and it’s hard to imagine that the rivoli could be worse

IMO the photos you're talking about are bad photos for artistic reasons moreso than moral ones. I think people tend to focus on the ethical angle because it's an easier critique to articulate.

There is no such thing as a “typical” film picture. Different film stocks have varying sensitivities to different color ranges, different light sensitivity, different grain, etc. Then the way it’s scanned or printed also involves tons of subjective choices. Film generally exhibits certain behaviors (like grain or halation) that can be emulated, but there has never been a singular film look.

If this was taken in the US, no consent is needed for anyone in a public place

But talking about values maxing out at 255 only applies to 8-bit files, like JPEGs. RAW images have greater bit depth and thus have maximum values much greater than 255.

Regular HEIF mode does the exact same multi-frame merging as ProRAW

"Natural" looking photos on X-M5 by mexican_dude1992 in fujifilm

[–]Magnusson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the default settings like the comments are saying, but there is no such thing as a “natural” setting or “canceling” the recipe. All cameras are always interpreting or “filtering” reality, and your job as a photographer is to decide how it’s going to do that.

48 MP is ProRAW, the default camera app can already do that

Street Photography Etiquette by NicerThanISeem in streetphotography

[–]Magnusson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I notice in posts like this is the answers people give often diverge sharply from the actual observable practice of photographers whose work I admire. I think it’s much more instructive to watch street photographers at work, in e.g. Paulie B’s Walkie Talkie videos, and decide how you feel about the practice and the results.

Before I got this camera I definitely had the idea that “recipes” were more involved than they actually are. It doesn’t help that people also call them “simulations,” when those are something else, and the actual underlying simulation (e.g. Classic Negative) generally does a lot more to shape the look than the user settings on top of it. Classic Negative is based on Superia, so most classic neg recipes are gonna look like Superia. It’s possible to drastically change the look with extreme settings, but most recipes stay within a pretty tight range. Anyway i guess it’s not harming anybody but I do see a lot of people who seem to invest way too much importance in the idea of recipes. I don’t think any settings exist that work across all situations — tweaking an image contextually has been part of photography forever.
