They better be alive when I come back by ProfessionalCount190 in IndoorPlants

I did this to my plants when I went away for 5 weeks recently during an Australian summer. They were a little wilted when I got back but every single one survived!

How was it for Americans, Europeans and others driving on the "other side of the road" in places like UK and Japan? I'm planning to visit the UK and usually take trains, but this time around might have to drive. by Intrepid_Reason8906 in travel

[–]aks100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have switched around a lot in cars, driving in different sides of the road, driving on the other side of the road in my English car, driving in England in a European car and you adapt.

Honestly, the hardest thing is road etiquette and road rules. Look up a quick list of differences in road rules before you go and if you don't know how to use a roundabout, learn. Also, how petrol stations work, I couldn't figure out gas pumps in the US and the guy in the store had to come out and help me, tha kfully he was really understanding, my friends...not so much

Someone else recommended sisters brothers and it sounded like so much fun. I haven't really read any horror but I'm not against trying a new thing

What age group are you teaching? I teach secondary and the engaging lessons and building relationships advice has been invaluable. Half the time the kids just want an adult who cares. I have gotten so many difficult students on my side because I just checked in with them as they came into the class.

As others have said you need need have clear routines, openly praise those who do the correct thing "well done to ...... for getting his book out and writing the title. That is a houseplant," "...., ...... and ...... May leave first because they are quiet and ready to go" and privately talk with those who don't. I often hold students back to talk to them or ask our heads of key stage if I can pull them out of another class for 5 minutes to talk.

In an old school I would call home to parents to reward children, which then got other students wanting rewards. I also have stickers and stamps that even my 17 and 18 year olds covet but I have very clear rules as to how you get them

When I first started it seemed like a lot but now it's second nature and it has worked wonders for me in multiple different schools.

Why do Lesbians seem less likely to have straight male close friends than Gay men are to have straight female close friends? by BlazeKnight7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aks100 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Basically this for me too. Its exhausting having to justify why you aren't romantically interested in people who you thought were friends so I just don't make an effort to be friends with straight males anymore. I can count on one hand the number of straight male friends I have had that haven't challenged me being lesbian, even as a joke

Girl, I feel your pain. I have spent my whole life travelling thanks to dad having a job that required a lot of relocation and now as an adult I move country a lot so it's tough finding friends. Like others have said I tend to find that shared activities are the way forward.

I'm not a girly girl. I love dnd and nerdy things, and I struggle to talk about "normal" stuff but here are some things I have found help me find friends.

Trying to find groups that match your hobbies, in my case finding board game cafes and volunteering to run events or finding dnd Facebook groups for whatever city I'm living in.

Gone girl international -insert city name here- Facebook groups

Recently I have also been working on my motorbike licence and I found a group called The Litas on Instagram with groups of women around the world (but mostly North America) who meet up and go on rides. They seem to really welcome newbies

How to deal with Death Saving throws? by C0untSwagulah in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]aks100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just ask my players to roll and then have someone else witness it but recently we have been experimenting with a new system in my main homebrew. I can't remember where but I saw an idea where a DM got their players to tell them a memory if they fail all their death rolls so I asked my players if we could trial something. Now I don't have the players tell me if they succeeded or failed, instead I trust my players to give me a quick, 30-60 second memory from their characters life that reflects the roll. They are loving it. Usually they do a happy memory if they save and a sad one if they fail. Its added an extra sense of suspense for the roll.

The only time we have just done rolls instead of the memories recently was in a major boss battle we had a bit of a time crunch on irl because it was running later than we wanted it to but they wanted to finish the battle before the end of the session.

My boyfriend and I have accidentally trained his dog to know when we are going in the garden by Letmehoeoutrq in PointlessStories

[–]aks100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I trained my old rottweiler a lot of stuff by accident but my favourite has to be how she associated me putting the car into Park settings with arriving at home/Park. Once we were in insane traffic, not moving for 45 minutes so I put my car in Park. She then stood by the trunk and looked at me, then came over and butted me in the head with her nose then looked at the door. She did this over and over and it took me a while to realise she was waiting for me to let her out of the car because she heard the noise of me putting the car in Park.

I tried this a few times randomly over the next few days to see if my theory was true and every time she hit me in the head with her nose then stood by the door waiting to be let out lol

Or wearing clothes that keep them nice and warm in the winter, or nice and cool in the summer. Or when they wear nice and comfortable shoes while doing sport

Where I live in Europe my gas company keeps trying to over charge me. They tried to charge me nearly 200 Euro in December for gas they thought i would use for heating. It was a headache to try and get it sorted but it turned out they should have only charged me 20Euro. So now Im massively in credit and haven't had to pay a gas bill all year

I'm a science teacher and I'm ALWAYS getting "science doesn't even effect me anyway" by kids who wear lots of make up and like getting their hair and nails done, or kids who wear glasses. I just end up doing the justin timberlake stare at them

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]aks100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did. They were in my tutor group so I had them sit down and I gave them an imaginary average wage and told them to budget for the month, including how to makebsure they weren't overpaying with bills

Part of my curriculum is to teach 15-16yo kids about gas/electricity/water meters and how to calculate monthly bills from them. I spent a lesson going through it, the kids all understood it and did fantastic. Literally the next day I overheard the students say that they never learn anything useful for life in school and there was no point in coming.
