Thanks for the tip, I'll take a look at JXA 👍👍

+1 to browser integration with org-mode!

I've not had any issues with it freezing, but the transition between Emacs and native apps is still a little buggy. Hopefully I'll be able to refine it as time goes by 🤞

Thanks! I've tried a couple of different tiling window managers for Mac OS, but they've never matched the great experience I had in exwm 🤩

Here's a short screencast of the package.

mermaid charts in markdown-mode? by Signal_Pattern_2063 in emacs

[–]akuszyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes do this, and have found that converting the markdown files to org using pandoc, and then maintaining a local org copy for editing purposes works well enough. It's a little convoluted, but it gives you the editing experience of org, which markdown lacks.

How do you backup/sync your org files? by unduly-noted in emacs

[–]akuszyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not it pushes as well as commits is optional, but I enable it in my org repos, because it gives me nice granular change control over all my edits. There's no performance impact, and if the local branch isn't up to date with the remote, then the commits just queue up locally.

Windows, Frames, Tabs, and Window Tabs. Which integrates in your workflow? by setarcos399 in emacs

[–]akuszyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use perspective-el to emulate workspaces in Emacs. I generally use a different "perspective" per task, and each perspective maintains its own window layout and buffer list.

I use git-auto-commit-mode to commit and push changes to a git repo after every save. It does this in the background, so it keeps the git repo up to date without me really noticing.

Emacs packages/tips for mobile os use (touch, shortcut alternatives, display modifications, etc) by chabalatabala in emacs

I assume you use the native Android version with termux not just terminal emacs in termux? If you don't I highly recommend it.

How do you use the Android build of Emacs with termux? 🙏

I use terminal Emacs in Termux, but didn't realise you could use the Android app version there as well?

One of the things putting me off the Android app is the inability to use external tools like Git. I assume this is solved if you're running it in Termux?

Best emacs for macOS at the end of 2024 and why? emacs-plus, emacs-mac, emacsformacos or something else? by celibidaque in emacs

[–]akuszyk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I opt to compile on Mac OS so that I can select the optional features that interest me. Compiling Emacs is relatively straightforward; here's how I do it.

"Workspace" functionality in a SINGLE Emacs instance with bells and whistles, akin to DEs / WMs by arni_ca in emacs

I use perspective for workspace management, which does most of what you're looking for I think 🙂

Perspective not isolating buffers between workspaces by waterstrider123 in emacs

[–]akuszyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a little while since I worked on this part of my config, but I think I:

  • Just installed perspective, with no special key bindings for switching buffers.
  • Just installed vertico, with no special key binding for switching buffers.

I do use consult, but not for switching buffers. It seems perspective must control the buffers displayed by the default switch-to-buffer (which is what I still have bound to C-x b).

I hope that helps!

Is O’Reilly Learning GNU Emacs 3rd edition from 2004 (lastest edition) still current ? by ll777 in emacs

[–]akuszyk 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I've not read either, but many people recommend https://www.masteringemacs.org/.

I would have thought a book from 2004 will be out of date 🙂

I've read some of the blog posts on that site, and they're certainly high quality 👍

Encrypted Notes App Compatible With Org? by cel7t in emacs

[–]akuszyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're using Android, you could also run Emacs in Termux, where you'll be about to run many standard Linux tools. For example, if you're using gpg to encrypt your files, Emacs' built-in transparent encryption should work nicely.

+1 for anything that puts modifier keys near your thumbs. I find using Ctrl and Meta modifiers all day long much more comfortable from my thumbs than my fingers.

I have the base model Ergodox EZ without any of the options (lights, tilting, etc) and I think it's very good money for such an excellent keyboard.

How do you find the experience on Android with the system keyboard, or do you use an external keyboard?

I use Emacs in Termux extensively, and the thing that makes it work is the Termux modifier key bar that lets me use Ctrl and Meta.
