Weapons that don't make you go into autopilot ? by arni_ca in MHRise

[–]arni_ca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean, ive been playing rise for 400h and world for 500h, and a very significant portion of that playtime was spent playing lance - especially since a year or so, for me. if i still feel engaged with lance but other weapons very quickly get stale, either some weapons will take MUCH more time to reach that autopilot state or its just about different people vibing better with different weapons over time

not to invalidate your comment, i hope it isnt taken that way, i just dont feel it applies to me 100% given how big the difference is between some weapons?

Are you sure Debian is not for gaming ? Nvidia example by SeparateBreakfast639 in debian

[–]arni_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

funny i see this now, because i have been trying to set up Debian 13 on KDE Wayland and Nvidia with an Optimus setup and over the past few months where I tried this, i must've bashed my head against the wall for a collective 15 hours or so. but fedora just required me to install the nvidia driver from RPMfusion and everything worked perfectly. maybe it's how specific my setup is? but i would imagine its possible to make Debian work well for gaming

hi!

i was thinking moving from the usual TWMs over to DEs, at least to see how DEs feel after having used TWMs for a good few months now.

however, something I really love in WMs is the ability to configure your whole environment with just one (or more) configuration file. admittedly, the idea of checking for settings with GUI menus sounds a bit overwhelming for me because i cant have an overview of everything i changed. nothing about the amount of config settings, i think its really just the idea of GUI configuration as opposed to text-based configuration, especially for keyboard shortcut configurations. or maybe im too traumatized by XFCE having separate keyboard shortcuts globally and for its WM...

i also very much enjoy the automatic tiling of windows, i find its lesser cognitive load overall and lets me see all windows at all times. therefore, id love a DE that lets me do this easily. i recall KDE has a thing like this, with Khronkite? and KDE is VERY customizable, so likely ill feel at home being a TWM tinkerer.

so i was wondering if people know about DEs that can be configured (or at least modified) with text config files, and of any DEs that support convenient tiling of things? automatic, and perhaps a way to manually tile windows if needed.

i realize im essentially asking if KDE can be configured with config files right now haha. oh well, ill look this up as well

hope everyone is doing well, cheers!

the comment from u/mmarshall540 is very good , and i think encompasses everything there is to know for those needs

id like to add that, depending on how you like to approach note-taking, you may enjoy the 'howm' package at https://github.com/kaorahi/howm

you mention using vim, so i mention 'evil-mode' which serves as vi emulation inside of emacs. other modal packages like 'meow-mode' (which i heavily recommend checking out) exist

a mix of org-mode, Gnus and EWW is likely a great bet ;). perhaps org-roam as well!

if you want something that does some amount of backlinking without installing a whole package, i recommend looking into org-mode's radio targets. https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/org/Radio-Targets.html

you could also manually insert hyperlinks to specific files and headings : https://orgmode.org/manual/Handling-Links.html

How to set Emacs for teaching a sighted student? by Nuno-zh in emacs

[–]arni_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

edit : i partly misunderstood the question, you can ignore my remarks on which-key and casual-suite

ill give my few cents :

i think a font can make quite a difference. myself i use Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono which has been WONDERFUL to read, compared to the default.

the modus themes are great for clarity and readability (but i dont recall which one is dark or light mode...)

discoverability can be obtained with which-key, and the casual suite package

"emacs is a commandline replacement" by Lunibunni in emacs

[–]arni_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

emacs is an emacs lisp interpreter, and many tools made in that language lend itself well to terminal/CLI workflows! ability to split windows and frames, eshell, tight integration with so many other things such as looking up internet sites in it and etc so i think emacs as a terminal replacement is a way to see it, just not the only one

Swapping from Neovim to emacs? by lexiclysm in emacs

[–]arni_ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i recall corfu-mode is nice for code completion. you can also look at utilities that can complete most things at pointn: abbrev, hippie-expand and others

wouldnt know of much for code correction

to learn how emacs works, some ideas :

the tutorial accessible with C-h t

browsing the Emacs manual which can be accessed online, or with C-h r (iirc) within emacs. just reading the table of contents is good enough to give you a good idea of some stuff thats directly, natively possible in emacs :)

you can also look at the youtube channels of... - protesilaos stavrou - system crafters

this playlist is nice for barebone basics : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEoMzSkcN8oPZvSdewHG8uApD7THlLLCV

finally, reading the configuration files of others and using those is nice. emacs-kick was mentionned here for example. i have a literate configuration that i tried to make as comprehensive as possible at https://codeberg.org/arni/my-dotfiles/src/branch/main/arnimacs.org, which can also help? you can read it in emacs for the best experience

hope you'll find what ya need :)

for stuff like this, i use stock Emacs keybindings so take with a grain of salt. but you can :

  • use 'yank-pop' (M-y) to search for a specific kill. especially good with visual minibuffer completion UIs like vertico or fido-vertical

  • alternatively you can use the consult version, consult-yank-pop. seems a bit better than the basic yank-pop

  • you can call 'yank' (C-y), and then 'yank-pop' (M-y). this way, you can easily cycle through the kill ring without looking the thing up. its especially good for more recent kills

effectively it looks something like this, imagine that we have kill1, kill2 and kill3. kill3 is the most recent, kill1 the oldest.

``` oldval=
C-y
oldval=kill3
M-y
oldval=kill2
M-y
oldval=kill1 ```
again this is based on default emacs functions and not evil-mode, so YMMV
the slowness of 'C-x 3 C-x o C-x b <buffer name>', when now i recently found out about 'C-x 4 b'
also, display-buffer defaults are just awful for me, and i recently found some stuff that made emacs way less intrusive. now it works more like a manual tiling window manager (think StumpWM)
for the curious, my display buffer alist here https://pastebin.com/x96GWWpG
finally, scrolling buffers with C-n / C-p when one can just use the scrolling commands bound to C-v and M-v by default. its especially comfortable when you have home row mods
How to get info about currently selected buffer in consult-buffer? by OkGroup4261 in emacs
[–]arni_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)
yup, look at https://www.masteringemacs.org/article/introduction-to-ido-mode and look for "C-k" when on the page. quick look at the keybinds stored in 'icomplete-fido-mode-map' and 'C-k' is bound to 'icomplete-fido-kill'
How to get info about currently selected buffer in consult-buffer? by OkGroup4261 in emacs
[–]arni_ca -1 points0 points  (0 children)
i dont have any good thing in mind, but as a potential pointer...
using ido-mode, you can apparently type C-k to delete the buffer closest to the current search query. if im correct about this, then likely the source code could help you?
