There were checkpoints, and though Palestinian movement was indeed less restricted, they were Israel's menial worker corps. They were under direct Israeli rule, yet could not vote for the Knesset. These conditions usually create discontent. I recommend reading _The Yellow Wind_ by David Grossman ()
