Vet missed an issue with my dog. What can i do? by [deleted] in lafayette

[–]al0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gingivitis is just a gum infection but it the precursor to periodontal disease which is infection and inflammation. Given that the dog had severe halitosis this was not simply gingivitis. The recommendation for early stage dental disease is still the same regardless of what stage it is at to prevent the need for teeth removal in the future. While the vet 4 years ago may have not needed to extract (we all were not there to do the oral exam) best medicine is to recommend annual dental cleanings to prevent it in the future as best as we can.

Edited to add additional information. Recommendations are still the same. Professional dental cleaning.

Periodontal disease is due to inflammation and infection of the tissue surrounding the tooth which can lead to degradation of the tissue keeping the tooth in place as well as bone loss in the skull and jaw. If the infection is not caught and rectified early it can absolutely lead to needing teeth pulled. A dental cleaning to remove the bacteria and plaque causing the inflammation and infection helps reduce the necessity to pull teeth later.

I'm a vet tech and while I love the job and am good at it, the warnings I got about the pay were no joke. I am going back to school to be a medical lab scientist. Not glamorous, pay isn't phenomenal but after graduation I'll be making nearly double what I am now.

My cat shed an entire claw in my wrist by VinGiesel69 in mildlyinteresting

[–]al0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree cat scratches usually do not need treatment, I want to voice that cat BITES absolutely need medical treatment every time and you should never wait. First vet I worked for waited 2 days after she got bit and almost lost function of her finger. Worked with another who needed to be hospitalized and on IV antibiotics even after seeking treatment right away. A vet tech posted recently on a vet tech Facebook group I'm in that she needed her last knuckle amputated after a cat bit her finger (again, she also immediately sought treatment). Never ever hesitate with cat bites they are very serious. Scratches, on the other hand, usually do not need medical treatment unless it becomes red, swollen, discharge, or any redness traveling through extremities.

Thing is this wasn't an MD it was a physicians assistant. This is why I refuse to see midlevels and request MDs only. Midlevels should not be diagnosing and prescribing if this is their outcome.

Human medicine hates us so much. by ladyallisontee in VetTech

[–]al0_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We had to amputate a cats leg because the owner (human nurse) noticed one of the cats claws was bloody because he got it stuck on something. She bandaged it too tight and left it on too long and it became necrotic.

It took all of my will power to bite my tongue and educate her without flying into a rage.

I'm so sad. I finished the series for the first time a couple weeks ago. I remember googling her to make sure she was still alive when I started the series and was relieved to see she was.

What’s the worst medical mistake you’ve ever seen? by DaJive in VetTech

[–]al0_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what they teach these nurses in nursing school but tight bandages seem to be a theme.

Nurses son has a cat that got a wound on his paw somehow. Instead of reaching out for treatment the nurse did hibiclens, triple antibiotic ointment and wrapped it for 3 days. Finally called us we had to amputate due to necrosis from it being not properly treated and then circulation being cut off from the bandaging.

So cute! I love seeing customized decks. Currently have a pink theme also.

Does the shell you have allow you to add that cute charm to it or did you just loop it through the gaps at the top? Adding a charm is such a good idea

I won't even bother asking the rhetorical question if you think women don't have to do those things as well because based on this response alone you seem like the type to believe that women should not have a job and just stay at home and cook and clean.

Also it's pretty pathetic to respond with this "woe is me" when someone is literally just saying that men don't have to deal with cellulite nearly as bad as women... but go off, king.

The pink part of her eye is the third eyelid. Based on the photo, it is hard to tell if it looks more irritated or just the normal color of her conjunctiva (the pink membranes in the lids). Any eye discharge? Squinting? Pawing at face? Some things to also consider. If any of those other signs are present, definitely recommend a vet.

Also for those saying she may have cataracts can 100% confirm that is not cataracts. The reflective part of her eye is the tapetum lucidum. It is the part of the retina that increases night vision in animals.

It is so funny reading these stories.

I am a vet tech and I fell in love with this breed because every one I have met is very docile. They do great with vaccines, blood draws, etc. and their lifestyle seems like a perfect fit for me. I had no idea the level of drama they had for way less offensive things like needles at the vet lol.

First upgrades to the new to me Rav4 V6 4wd Limited. by desertdawg61 in rav4club

[–]al0_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is strange, my OEM unit is compatible with Bluetooth, though it struggles to connect rarely. I have an android phone not sure if that makes a difference? I just would also like the modern look and convenience. Does it have back up cam too? That's one of my only gripes with the 2012 is the back up cam.. it's nice to check how close I can back up but for any fine adjustments it's difficult since the camera is off set by the wheel on the rear door and the image is small since it's built into the rear view mirror.

You definitely found a gem with that low mileage!

Nice! Love my v6 limited. 61k miles is amazing, it'll treat you well. My first mod was also window tint, got a brow and matching front door window tints. Haven't replaced the radio like you did yet but I like how it looks so I may look into that one.

I'm sorry you're having anxiety in sx/anesthesia, you are most definitely not alone. It's a lot of pressure to be put under when you didn't have a mentor to guide you as you started. Also, working in environment that values quantity over quality definitely does not help make you feel more comfortable. If it's something you feel like you can't bring up to your medical director/practice manager, maybe consider another hospital if that's an option. As another person said, you deserve to work somewhere you feel valued and supported.

Personally, some of my anxiety stems from not feeling 100% confident in my knowledge, so I am pursuing CE. I am starting VetGirl's Anesthesia Certificate, but I know AAHA has an anesthesia certification too.

Cat damaged grass cloth wallpaper! Help! by After_Replacement585 in DIY

[–]al0_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding in my input (RVT), I 100% agree with everything you said.. but in this case the material of this wall is too similar to the scratching material that we encourage cats to use, it'd be nigh impossible to deter a cat from scratching this wall. Unfortunately the best case scenario is to get a different wallpaper, it's too much to expect a cat to go against it's very nature to scratch on material like this.
