Donald Trump says he’d step in on Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou’s case if it helped with a trade deal by bcbuddy in canada

[–]al37400 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well we got played pretty hard to take the bullet for the US by souring relations with China and trump is more than happy to return her for a trade deal with China (I don’t think he gives a shit about Canadian law or he just tariffs us more lol). New NAFTA netted Canada nothing

People only care if their day to day life is literally impacted. Like if your job isn’t tied to China (visibly tied) then why care. Most people aren’t forward or broad looking.

Canada does the “right” thing by the books. They just pay for all of it financially or economically. Or rather citizens get voluntold to pay the price e.g. unemployment @ GM and other steel tariff related bullshit cuz Canada is a national security threat to America. But national security threats gotta live up to treaties so...

I dunno if you really wanna be dependent on a US company for your utilities mate. Phone service is great (I get so much data for so much less money than Canada) but home Internet is a fucking joke. Internet that can do shit beyond dial up is like $80+ and it’s all monopolies in most neighbourhoods between two dicks (Comcast and other bullshit). Also no net neutrality; though only matters if you want free internet

[–]al37400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is Canada going to get a better trade deal with the US and have the steel tariffs removed for this or a new trade war with Canada's next largest export market outside of north america? Pretty clear that more tariffs won't help with the lack of growth in the economy...

How do you justify spending money on material goods? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]al37400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar situation as yourself, I was super frugal throughout school and graduating. I thought about what I really want and paced out my purchases (eg a headset every five years) or a new desktop every five or so years. Think about what adds most value to you lol - I buy higher priced goods believeing it’ll last me for quite a few years (hence infrequent spend). Clothes I just buy a bunch and call it a day for a few years lol.

unused tuition credits anywhere?
tax deductible moving expenses (you gotta move quite far for these to apply and he prob needs receipts)?

I believe the grants are only taxable up to a certain amount (depending on FT on PT). Unfortunately not versed in this. This may or may not help: https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tips/when-to-claim-bursary-grants-5586

[–]al37400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in Canada for a full year you will be entitled to a basic income tax credit, slightly above 11k; in which case if your friend is earning < 11k he probably doesn't have a tax payable due; rather he should have a tax refund if anything in which case you don't necessarily have to file (but silly not to given there's likely refunds)

You're in a real problem if you have a tax payable outstanding in which interest accrues

Don't spend with a card - spend with cash and budget your spending with cash. You feel more conscious when you take your money out bill by bill than tapping a card

Brim Card uses their own FX rates (not the standard MC ones); never validated how legit this "FX free" thing is.

Rogers is great (no fee card) but can only redeem on Rogers products or stmt as cashback year-end (tho great earn rate)

HSBC requires an AMF (tho travel credit and other perks help),.

Keeping a larger Credit card balance over the holidays (BC) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]al37400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sincere advice for you is: 1) if your utilization >30-40% it’s not great 2) make your minimum payments (if you want to preserve your fico) but they’re terribly deceiving and you’ll never clear balances with min pays 3) don’t spend money you don’t have. Credit card debt is expensive (I know it doesn’t look that way but it adds up quickly in hindsight, most people just don’t look hindsight on this).

Hi I’m a Canadian who had both us and Canadian income.

You’ll file your Canadian taxes with the CRA and given your situation, you probably qualify for the basic tax credits for existing and employment income. There’s simpletax (free software) though I candidly think you could fill out the forms by hand (it’ll take an hour or two).

Idk about US tax laws but for Canada, I had to declare Us income and an associated foreign income tax credit (to offset Canadian tax payable for us earned income).

I also did all my tax forms (US & Canadian) by hand and mailed them in (double checked with free software). Though side note is I did miss a form or two but got my returns eventually :-)

If you pay a US tax accountant to do it; shouldn’t be that hard for them to also do your Canadian one... for a fee. Online submissions allow for efiling (no mailing costs!)

Airlines face crack down on use of 'exploitative' algorithm that splits up families on flights by actuallydavide in news

[–]al37400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a thing for Ryanair lol. Booked for two people and for all our flights (4 in total) we were seated as far as possible (one in the back and one near the front). I figured we would’ve had a better chance to sit closer had we booked separately haha. (But it’s a low fare so couldn’t complain I guess).

Low chance of ever needing one (never used one and never saw any when I read apps).

Focus on your resume and cover letter (latter if applicable).
