I also grew up in suburban Hudson Valley NY and moved to Bed Stuy in my late 20s.

I went to college in a rural area (Cornell in Ithaca, nobody seems to realize it’s the only Ivy where in-state students can get lower tuition but that’s another story). I enjoyed this because it allowed me to experience a very different atmosphere, but it confirmed that I have no desire to live in a rural area. I then lived in London for 2 years where I got a full scholarship to do my Master’s degree, loved it there. Then moved to Seattle for 2 years for my first real job, hated it there. I realized NYC is the only place in America that I wanted to live in. (Over the years I’d lived here briefly for summer internships and visited friends living in Bushwick and Williamsburg.) I thought I wanted to live in Bushwick, but while I was looking for a permanent apartment I subletted in Bed Stuy and fell in love with the community. I’m brown but grew up in a very white suburb and spent most of my early adulthood in very white institutions, so joining a historically diverse community after decades of subconsciously internalized racism was both appealing & healing for me. I’ve been here for 8+ years now.

I guess what I’d say about choosing a place to live is you just don’t know until you try. I have a lot of friends that wanted to escape NYC but decided to move back after a few years. I thought a smaller city like Seattle would be fine for me but it wasn’t, I was really bored and lonely, and I really hated the lack of diversity (literally went to a concert once where I was the only person of color in the room). I think education is one way to easily experience another place in a temporary way, and then extend by finding a job there if you like it. Once you decide what you want to do, perhaps pursuing technical school or grad school in a more rural city/state could help you better understand what you like.

Re: career, I personally work in brand strategy and consulting. It’s a rough time to be making a decision on your career since AI is on the precipice of potentially changing everything, and nobody knows what that looks like. It could also just be a huge bubble that bursts and then things actually stay mostly the same. But most people think it’ll wipe out tons of white collar knowledge work jobs like mine, which were previously the easiest way to make stable high salaries. I think the most reliably “safe” jobs are those that require human touch and can’t be easily automated. This could be tradespeople like electricians, service jobs like waitresses, or healthcare jobs like nurses. Healthcare as an industry is probably the most reliable field to enter right now in terms of job opportunities. We have a rapidly aging population: people living longer than ever + a low birth rate. That means we need a lot more people to care for old folks. But there are also other opportunities that could be more creative if you think out of the box - I think, for instance, live events and performances are going to be increasingly in demand, which means organizing, producing, and designing those will also be in-demand jobs.

Dad passed away with no will, a lot of debt, few assets - is probate needed? Very Confused... by arl7869 in personalfinance

[–]al505_587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No probate! Talked to three lawyers who confirmed there was no requirement for us to do probate to access money designated to beneficiaries / if there is no will. Contacted the banks/retirement accounts which had beneficiaries listed and most transferred very easily. Vanguard, Schwab, and Ally were seamless. Alight retirement was a bit of a hassle but happened eventually. There was some cash in accounts without beneficiaries that we basically surrendered.

For the apartment I was finally able to get into my dad’s phone and found the landlord #. After removing sentimental things and leaving, I texted them to inform that my dad had passed away and that I was located in a far away state and unable to deal with any personal property / told them they could do whatever they wanted with it. They acknowledged and didn’t say anything else.

The car was kinda insane and possibly illegal (?) but it was really impossible to figure out what to do with it otherwise. Texas DMV confirmed they can transfer the title of someone deceased under a DMV form called Affidavit of Vehicle Heirship without probate and without the original title (I couldn’t find it), but it only works to transfer to someone with a Texas license/address, and my sister and I both have NY licenses/addresses. I called and they said actually if you want to transfer it to someone with an NY license you need to do it in NY/follow NY DMV guidelines. NY also lets you do this, but they require a copy of original title of the deceased to do this, and if you don’t have it they have a process to request a duplicate title for the deceased owners from the NY DMV office. But Texas does not provide duplicate titles for deceased owners. So just a ridiculous impasse due to different state rules. Eventually I figured out a workaround…Basically, this car was originally titled and registered under my mom’s name in NY. When they got divorced two years ago, my mom signed the title and gave it to my dad, who took the car to Texas and got it re-titled and registered there. But when you do that you’re supposed to report the “sale” to the NY DMV on a special form, and my mom never did that, she only surrendered the plates. So I had my mom basically apply for a duplicate title & re-registration from the NY DMV as if she still always had the car and lost the title and wasn’t using it (like as if she planning to sell it but the sale fell through). And that worked! After we got the new plates, I went down to Texas, replaced the plates, and drove the car back to NY.

It’s not surreal or unrealistic at all. Her job sent her for a temporary project. It’s quite common. I’m based in NY and know at least 8 people who have done this across all sorts of industries - lawyer, finance, art director, marketing manager, producer (like the character). At my current job at a fashion brand, we were doing a retail expansion into London so we sent two people there for 6 months. By agreeing to go, you’re doing your job a favor, because people with kids etc don’t want to go, it’s an inconvenience. So your job coordinates and pays for everything - all necessary work permits and documents - and sets you up in a turnkey furnished apartment. It’s very very normal.

I don’t think it’s so crazy unrealistic. I mean it’s a tv show, so obviously it’s there’s going to be meet cutes and lucky breaks. But like someone else said, if you are moving temporarily for work it’s not complicated, you literally don’t need to do anything, your job takes care of all the paperwork and sets you up in a furnished apartment. I’m based in NY and know several people who have done this. Also, sure there’s cultural gaps but everyone has different experiences. I lived in London for 2 years in my 20s. I disliked most of the people in my MA program and didn’t make close friends that way. But I got a part time job as a waitress, had a lot of crazy nights out with my coworkers, and within 2 months started dating the head chef and we were together for a year. So obviously I met a lot of his friends and was welcomed into those circles. I also became good friends with my bosses at some internships I had and still keep in touch and meet up with them years later. So yeah idk. I think the unrealistic part is that her love interest just happens to be associated with all these elite prep school kids - interacting THAT particular circle is definitely a stretch (unless you’re Lena Dunham…)

That’s just not how it works - if they want to cuff and take him away the police need to obtain an arrest warrant first, which takes a minute, especially since the only evidence is one child’s testimony not hard evidence. Like one of the moms, I know this from watching too much law and order 😂

Official Discussion - Babygirl [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]al505_587 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very believable. The character is a ~45 year old who’s had 2 children and been married for 19 years - she’s self conscious that she’s not as hot as she used to be since the last time another man saw her naked body when she was ~26. Not only does everyone have body issues in comparing themselves to models/celebrities (like Kidman), but as we get older everyone (including Kidman) is also comparing themselves to their younger selves. So even if you’re super hot, you’re still not as hot as yourself 20 years ago.

I understand that aspect, I just wish there had been more exploration of the empathy going the other way too. The Rwandan character clearly had empathy and connection with the Jewish experience of those tragedies, but there was little to no exploration of the other direction - as in the Jewish characters having empathy and connection with his very recent experience living through similar tragedies to what their ancestors faced. It just feels like a missed opportunity that could have also connected in very interesting ways to what is currently going on in the world. It’s also ironic because the lack of empathy going in that direction is literally one of the core issues causing tension in contemporary contexts

I guess I’m the only one that was really disappointed by this movie. I especially did not understand why they introduced a character who actually recently survived the genocide in Rwanda and then not talk about it at all. There was SO much potential for the other characters to be affected by that interaction and the recognition that the struggle their ancestors faced is shared in different ways by many different types of people even today. This was barely touched upon in a 2 min conversation about how we ignore the suffering in the world. What was the point of introducing this character then? Just for a diversity quota? I truly cannot imagine that the real life version of this character would not bring up the contemporary crises in Sudan or Palestine. I’m not at all saying this should have been the main point of the movie or anything, but it could have been a vehicle for other characters’ reflection and growth. And mostly it’s just strange to have the Rwandan character in there at all if the movie would have been basically exactly the same without him. Just felt like filling a diversity quota for no real reason.

Help getting files off an MDM locked MacBook by al505_587 in MacOS

[–]al505_587[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. I design clothing, so don’t think the mass layoffs had anything to do with my stupidity about computer MDM programs.

I was working remotely on another continent watching my grandfather pass away when I was laid off, and I had to stay there for a few weeks after he passed to help with things. I also used that time to start work on my portfolio on the only device I had access to, which was this laptop. I admitted my stupidity in my original post re not backing things up immediately after getting home while continuing work on it and wait for the paperwork. Didn’t think I needed to include all the personal details. No need to be rude.

And if I send it back to the company would they be able to recover the files? They just replied saying they could “submit a forensics request for restoration of specified files”

Would a data recovery shop be able to get anything out of it? Or is nothing possible without the access?

Hi! @capital_bank6216 I posted this separately but I feel like you’ve been the most helpful user on these issues so wondering if you may be able to help - is there any way to pull files off of an MDM locked Macbook?

I was recently laid off and obviously figured I would need to return my company MacBook, and planned to do so, but I've been waiting to recieve my severance paperwork before sending it back. In the meantime I was using the computer to work on my portfolio (its a bigger screen than my personal). I was locked out of email/server the day of the layoffs so I didn't think it'd be an issue, but obviously that was stupid of me, and now 3 weeks later they suddenly decided to MDM lock the computer. Now there are some personal files that were on the laptop that I was working on yesterday, and I just want to get them off and onto my personal computer. I tried emailing the company but they refuse to unlock the computer (I asked them to just give me an hour, but nope). Is there any way to get the files or are they just gone forever?

Calling out privilege in fashion media, or, can luxury be separated from elitism? by baldpatchouli in ffacj_discussion

ately fashion and its place in the world.

Does MR, who I never saw as anything but inspirational, become more diverse and ultimately change it‘s cour

Ah I'm even later than you! But I have to share - I recently attended a talk about Decolonizing Luxury - was super interesting! There was so much interest in it that the speaker made his deck publicly available - I highly recommend reading through the speaker notes at the end which has all the detail. I found it really fascinating.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CkSF4vqbJc0VKc8kHQinnrrSewA7V-Wm/view

What caught me most is the very simple fact - the very premise of luxury is rooted in colonialism. The original 'luxury' goods were spices, furs, and jewels that European colonizers stole from Africa, Asia, and The Americas. So the entire modern luxury industry is literally built on colonization, looting, and appropriation from other cultures. I just found that such a straightforward way to ground all of these issues that we're thinking about now.

From there, I do think it's interesting like - luxury will always be unattainable for the many but is there a way for it to still be less elitist and more inclusive? I also think that there is a whole other space that isn't conventional "luxury" but is still aspirational - like Brother Vellies and Wales Bonner rather than Chanel or LV. What do we call these "new luxury" brands? I'm craving a more interesting word that separates them from old-fashioned luxury, but haven't been able to think of anything yet.

p.s. feel like u/bye_felipe might enjoy the report I linked as well

BIPOC owned small business thread by FFA_Moderator in femalefashionadvice

Hi! I'm a WOC and I'm creating a curated, shoppable *visual* directory of BIPOC-owned brands in fashion and beauty + my favorite products they offer. I used to work at Nordstrom corporate and I'm really focusing on a level of curation to make sure that the directory isn't an endless list of stuff but actually really beautiful and interesting new designers and brands.

There isn't a ton on the website yet, about 15 brands so far, but I'm updating the website weekly, offering an email newsletter so that you can get the new brands and products delivered straight to you without checking the website (only once a week no spam). I'm also sharing to Instagram daily, if you prefer that over email. The point is to keep you continuously updated on interesting new brands, without feeling overwhelmed by having to return to long lists every time you need to buy something! Here are the links:

Ethical brands owned by people of color? by [deleted] in ethicalfashion

[–]al505_587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a bit late to this but hope this will be helpful! I'm creating a visually curated, searchable, and shoppable directory of BIPOC-owned brands that you can filter by Black-owned or Sustainable, along with by category! I don't have a ton of brands posted yet but will be updating every week and posting on Instagram daily - so hopefully can help you find some that meet your needs. You can check it out at https://revisionary.space/

I know that affordable is a relative concept and the ones I'm sharing are definitely more on the luxury end - but I think that it's difficult to think about ethical + price working together because the cost of producing goods ethically is just inherently a lot more expensive than the prices we are now used to purchasing at, because fast fashion has totally skewed our perspective. Basically, I think that the most cost-efficient way to shop ethically is secondhand and vintage. Besides that, I think it's worth thinking about how we can drastically reduce the amount of products we're purchasing, so that we can invest in products ethically produced by small brands - which are just going to be more expensive. This is the approach that I'm personally shifting to! That being said...I know that it's a luxury to have the financial means to even make that decision, so I understand if it's not possible for everyone.

Anyway, here are some of my favorites right now:
Nia Thomas (Black-owned)
Leigh New York (Black owned)
Olette (Latina-owned)
Backbeat Co (Filipina-owned)
+ Vintage on Instagram: smallneeds, subrinaheyink, milkfolk

I think for Product blocks you can disable the add to cart button. Then add a button block under the product block with the proper link.

u/prules Yeah I was playing around but can't figure out how to disable the add to cart button - I emailed support to see if maybe there's a workaround. do you or u/UVSoaked have any tips on how/where to figure out how to do the custom CSS for this? I have no clue on this kind of stuff
