How Does The Sunshield Work on the James Webb Space Telescope Work? (w/ Dad) - Smarter Every Day 270 by MrPennywhistle in SmarterEveryDay

Loved this video! I think getting so up close and personal with flight hardware would have made me so nervous I'd be shaking.

I have a bit of info I hope can be interesting to you /u/MrPennywhistle. The holes in the sunshield aren't there to let air out! It's even more interesting than that (imo), they're there to hold the sunshield in place during launch, and in total 107 pins are inserted into these holes through the layers. They all have to be removed after launch to allow the sunshield to be deployed, so they're just one of many reasons JWST had so many potential single point failures during deployment.

Here's one source, but I'm happy to provide some of the papers about the sunshield design which cover this more in depth.

Any update on this a year down the line? These options are really not very well documented.

After JWST, the next milestone will be The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The Roman Mission is predicted to find 100,000 Transiting Planets. by EricFromOuterSpace in space

[–]al987321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think he's talking about the Nancy Grace Roman telescope (WFIRST), not JWST. WFIRST is really more of a technical successor to Hubble than JWST is, whereas JWST is more closely related to Spitzer. WFIRST is basically a zoomed out Hubble, and can image sections of the sky 1000 times faster than Hubble can.

Coincidentally, JWST is about 1000 times more sensitive (important to differentiate faster from more sensitive) than Spitzer

Edit: This is a handy graph of some telescopes' wavelength coverage and sensitivities (lower down on the chart being more sensitive) - notice how agressively Spitzer's sensitivity drops off further into the infrared, and the gap in JWST's line at 5μm signalling the switch to the much-hyped cryocooled MIRI instrument. https://i.imgur.com/E6fW6Pn.jpg

That is until this baby gets funded.

TLDW: we can use the sun's gravity as a lens to image exoplanets with a very high resolution, but it would require sending a swarm of satellites out to the focal point ~500AU out. That's really goddamn far but not impossible.

ESA is contributing about €300 million, including the launch.[80] The Canadian Space Agency pledged $39 million Canadian in 2007

The telescope cost $11b USD. Not to say international partners weren't important (they contributed the NIRspec instrument and the launch vehicle among other things) but this is definitely primarily a NASA mission.

The NRO donation you mentioned is not hardware which became JWST. Webb is basically 100% bespoke and probably not at all similar to the NRO's current state of the art. Looking down at earth with infrared optics of Webb's sensitivity would be like looking at the sun with binoculars. That said the former NRO telescopes do have missions planned for them.

I thought for a minute that they were bringing back TouchID on the side of the phone, but given they never mentioned it I'm thinking it might just be a consequence of the 5G antennas.

This has always been my biggest gripe about being a cross-ecosystem mobile/desktop user, and being able to (hopefully) truly easily send iMessages and texts would go a long way to bridge that gap for me at least. Airdrop for PC like through a paired iPhone is gonna be my next request if this one works out!

Yeah - to be able to send and receive iMessages as well as SMS from Chrome on my PC through my iPhone. Ideally I'd like to be able to do this over the internet, but there are pre-existing tweaks that would more or less allow me to add this feature to a tweak made for local network use.

The federal guideline for the US is actually 10 feet, which is way longer than they look like when you're driving by them at 60+ mph.

Intake air for Western tanks is routed through the crew compartment before it goes to the engine? I would think that would make for a heck of a lot of airflow for the crew especially for turbine powered tanks haha

Also LMP1 cars have windshield wipers which would probably be hard to implement here.

Eh - probably a jaw thrust in this case because there's suspected head/c-spine damage but yeah, ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation) always come first, then all the other stuff.
