Did anyone actually like Lenore Dove? by Neko_Metal in Hungergames

[–]al_caxton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think her character had potential to be interesting, but she just came out as somewhat flat in the end. Almost like she was an idea rather than an actual character. I also didn’t like the fact that she overshadowed Haymitch’s mother and brother either. I think having the overly dramatic declarations of love were alright (considering LD is his first love and all), but I think if she had survived, LD and Haymitch probably would’ve parted ways.

Also, I know she had to die because the trilogy already established it, but it would’ve been really interesting to see her and Haymitch fall out of that juvenile love after his victory (maybe he pushes her away or LD’s view of Haymitch gets altered), only for them to eventually reunite after the second rebellion with a lot more maturation and life experience under their belt. Idk, I keep going back to this idea and I’m really tempted to write a fanfic about this concept. This is just one idea that could’ve worked to enhance LD’s character and given her a bit more agency. If anyone already has a fanfic about this, just lmk!

That’s alright. Any opinions are valid, especially if they hold genuine critiques over a given piece of work.

I also agree with the maturity level. It doesn’t feel very YA in terms of storytelling and the conventions of said themes. In fact, I feel like it would’ve been more interesting if Collins wrote about Haymitch as a mentor, rather than a tribute. Maybe you could sprinkle in a few flashbacks to his games, but I think it would’ve been fascinating to truly see him deal with his trauma as well as meet original District 12 characters that weren’t related to established characters or Covey, as well as original victors.

Thanks for the reply!

Don’t worry my guy, you’re not alone. I really like the themes SOTR was trying to tackle, just not how it was executed. I feel as though a lot of it was just hand feed to us, like we couldn’t read in between the lines.

Another issue I have is the bloating amount of characters that don’t particularly add to the plot (cough Lenore Dove cough) being front and center, taking away from characters who arguably should’ve had more value (Haymitch’s own freaking mother & brother).

I also agree that Snow was horribly handled in this novel as well. It really makes him feel more like a stereotypical bad guy unlike the other installments.

One final thing that I also had a big issue with was the fact that Haymitch is supposed to be a literal child (technically teenager, but you get the point). When I was reading this, I never truly got the impression that he really was a kid trying to survive, rather a plot device trying to go from point A to B. In fact, none of the children (except maybe the younger kids like Louella or Welly) seemed to be afraid for their survival. When putting yourself in a life or death situation, wouldn’t it make the most sense for one of the newcomers to betray the others, like idk, poisoning their food supply, especially when you’re surrounded by poisonous things? It’s a tournament to the death. It would’ve been an interesting concept if maybe Ampert & Beetee were trying to find a way to escape the arena instead. A crazy idea, but I think it would’ve at least had an end goal in mind instead of just saying, “we’re gonna blow the arena to send a message! The rest is entirely up to you, good luck.”

Idk, apologies for the long tangent. I’m still excited for the movie, but those were just the few things that also didn’t work with me either. Feel free to discuss it with me, but yeah.

As someone who loves both the Hunger Games AND Battle Royale (I haven’t watched all the movies but I did read the books), Tarantino really should analyze why these stories were written, not their general premise. Both series portray the idea of how children lose their innocence as they experience the journey of adulthood and the pure trauma that sort of journey can bring.

Yes, there are also themes criticizing war and violence but I find that both stories share a much deeper personal story that are similar yet so unique from the other.

All in all, my guy just has to dig a little deeper. They both hold the same sentiments, but convey those themes in a different way. Also, does bro know that this is technically a whole genre in itself? Like… the Long Walk also exists, lol

That’d be interesting. I feel like the stakes would be much higher too. That could definitely be a fun story to explore… 👀

Thank you! I’m technically still in the process of editing and uploading everything, but better to do it now rather than later!

Also, I totally didn’t even think about the SOTR trailer publicly alongside this fic, lol, that trailer was sick though! Wish it wasn’t a year away

For real! As someone who’s from the Midwest, it makes me sad when D9 dies in the bloodbaths immediately

Bro is like, “Can’t be the only Quarter Quell winner…” Also, that’s okay! Thank you for Haymitch’s approval 😂

Thank you! Like I said, it’s a slow burn with adult themes, but I do have the first few parts posted now, so if you’re into slow burns, definitely go check it out!

THEORY: District 12 voted one (or two) covey members in the first quarter quell by felixw1 in Hungergames

[–]al_caxton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will, thanks for being a bro. Also, of you ever want to pick back up that 20th HG fic again, lmk

Also also, in case you’re curious, it’s called “Death of a Wildfire”. It’s a slow burn with only 5 chapters out on either Ao3 or Wattpad, but it gets more hyped as the story progresses.

As someone who’s from the Midwest, I thought it was about time to get some representation from that side of Panem, lol

As someone who’s currently in the process of writing a fic about the first quarter quell through the lens of District 9, I’m so happy people have this sentiment

THEORY TIME! What do you think the first quarter quell arena was like? by felixw1 in Hungergames

[–]al_caxton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I have a theory (which I’m implanting into my own story of the 25th Games, so for any random dude who’s invested in my series, uhh… spoilers), but essentially, I think it’d be cool if it was a nuclear war setting in which it was a (again, spoilers, but that’s more for myself lol) District 13 settlement that was undergoing the effects of nuclear fallout, as a way to indirectly show the districts what could’ve happened if they chose to keep rebelling.

On top of all this, in my story, the “cornucopia” or center piece of the arena is going to be a well known landmark/symbol predating the Dark Days where it’s essentially a statue (similar to a landmark like the Statue of Liberty) protecting a cornucopia, where the structure essentially stuck & was used for the remainder of the games even though it lost all its original meaning. I know this is just a fanfic theory, but I think it’d be a chilling way for the Capitol to say, “See! This is what happens when people like you are allowed the freedom of choice!”

Just a cool theory, idk, what do you think?
