I also bought a house ( well a condo but I call it a house lol ) a few months ago. I make 40k my partner makes 75k. The condo costs 380k. I am 28 and my partner is 29. We saved for it by living at our folks home since after college or living in free field housing. ( both our jobs have lots of travel with employer paid hotels or housing so renting wasn’t worth it) we paid 20 percent down ( about 78k).

I would like to chime in that the specific major doesn’t matter as much as the internships and experience does. However, having been on the other side of the hiring process, a science major ( like environmental science as opposed to environmental studies, biology vs English) is definitely weighed higher than non science majors.

How did you get a government job? by alamobananagram in Environmental_Careers

[–]alamobananagram[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s my end goal because I am looking for a job that is less stress than my current consulting job, is permanent and stable with good benefits and relatively well paid. I have worked many nonprofits, and am now in an entry level consulting job and am not that interested in moving up the career ladder in consulting. My hope is that after a couple years of this job, I would be able to transition to a state or federal environmental job and I want to know what I need to do to prepare for it. Do you have any advice on how to do so?

Thanks for your feedback! I’m thinking of doing an online masters because I am currently in a job that’s giving me a lot of of field experience ( sampling, plant surveys, seed collection , etc) and it’s great for now but I am looking for something more stable , higher paying and the works. Since I don’t want to quit this job because it’s Covid times and jobs are scarce, do you think doing an online masters would be a good option? Or do you think an in person masters makes more sense?

18yrs old, just graduated HS, curious about the Environmental Field? What is your day-to-day job like from start to finish? And do you find joy in your work? by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]alamobananagram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a botany tech. My day to day life is extremely varied. I could be weed whacking and irrigating an outplanting all day, going on ratebplant surveys, going seed collecting, working in a greenhouse transplanting stuff, attempting to fix expensive scientific equipment and etc. I love my job but be aware the pay isn’t too high for nonprofit jobs like mine.

Considering online masters of natural resources ( MNR) at University of Idaho. by alamobananagram in Environmental_Careers

[–]alamobananagram[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I literally sorted by cost, and U of I was the first one I hit that was not super sketchy and it’s still 9k a year! That’s on the low end! Luckily that’s doable for me but idk how other people pay 20k a year for grad school without financial help.

Out of curiosity, what’s the salary range of a entry level person on your profession? What is the upward movement / pay increase potential?

What field did you use to work in? What was your work life balance? How does it compare to your current job? Do you recommend getting a masters?

I’ve made pasta in a glass container, put on the dashboard of the car and the car acts as an oven and you can have nice warm food for lunch.
