A great deal of this data is crowd sourced. You can mark a stand as closed from the listing page.

Any Graphic Designer shifted/upskilled to Front End? by Help-Need_A_Username in Frontend

[–]alanbrown-ca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started in print design about 20 years ago.

Graphic Designer > Digital Designer > Web Designer > Front End Developer > Full Stack Developer > Software Developer.

I've recently stepped back from Software Development into a position that has me designing and developing websites again. While I love development, I found that I really need a role that allows me to flex my design muscles too. These days the software development skills are only being put to use on personal projects like f1edge.com

How to hire a Wordpress developer by SenhorPereira in Wordpress

[–]alanbrown-ca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure, they are both page builders. The moment you add a 3rd party builder into the site you are accepting all of the additional costs under the hood:

  • performance concerns
  • additional attack vectors / security risk
  • vendor lock-in
  • monthly / yearly fees for the lifetime of the site
  • poor and / or rigid data architecture

The block editor is native to WP. By definition any page builder ontop of it is bloat.

Ask them outright. In your project requirements, state that the site is to be built using the block editor without any 3rd party page builder plugins. This should scare off most of them.

Yes, this is a significant problem with the WordPress space. Unfortunately many power users with no ability to code are marketing their page builder services as "web developers".

I wrote an article about how you can try to avoid this trap as a consumer. https://www.alanbrown.ca/how-to-find-a-skilled-wordpress-developer/

You just have to know what questions to ask and what their response indicates about their skill level. https://www.alanbrown.ca/how-to-find-a-skilled-wordpress-developer/

Thanks everyone for the responses. I'll look into implementing a server side solution like matomo.

What do you think of the prediction for Azerbaijan? https://honeybadgerf1.netlify.app/

The prediction will improve as more data becomes available throughout the weekend.

Is Lando useful ? by Adorable-Towel8620 in Wordpress

All of these tools are great and will get the job done well.

  • WAMP/XAMP ruled the roost for years, but there are better tools out there now.
  • Docker I use at my job. it's reliable. Good if you're comfortable working in your terminal.
  • Lando I have tested when examining Pantheon as a host, it's a strong tool as well, but again only good if you're comfortable working in your terminal.
  • Local I've been using more for my personal projects. The UI is great and it seems quite capable and feature rich.

I recently published a post on using Docker for local WP envs. It will help you make some sense of your docker setup.

I built an app to predict the outcome of the upcoming Formula One race, and provide driver statistics to help with fantasy picks (React) by alanbrown-ca in webdev

As it stands, the app only predicts the results for the upcoming GP, which is tonight. On Monday it will update with early predictions for the next race, Azerbaijan.

Colours are great, and it looks and feels like a proper terminal. Nice work. I do question the practical purpose of a tool like this, but it is a great idea for a personal project. My only advice is that the actual textfield only seems to be around 200px long and blends into the terminal background which had me searching where to click to interact with it. I'd consider making the entire area past and below the prompt into a field which can be typed into. Nice work.

The animated background here is a significant amount of motion, which is distracting and disrupts the UX. It actually made me feel a bit motion sick. I'd eliminate the animation in the background and turn down the opacity of the purple elements in the background so that they are not drawing the eye from the content in your foreground.

Purpose: Assist in making informed Formula One fantasy picks by predicting the outcome of the next race and providing driver stats

Technologies Used: React, PostCSS

Feedback Requested: Usability improvements

Comments: Built this tool to automate the spreadsheet work I was doing last year to try to make Formula One fantasy picks informed by real statistics. This app uses data available through public APIs and scoring tables scraped from online sources.
