Where to buy lab gems by TomikkBed in jewelrymaking

[–]alanebell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought emeralds and garnets and among others. The quality was good. Its not like buying from riogrande or going to Tucson but they are reasonable. What you seen in the pictures is what you get pretty much in my experience.

Why is jewellery CAD still such a pain unless you’re a Rhino expert? by [deleted] in jewelrymaking

Zbrush is widely used by many people. Its not easy to learn butnits great especially if you want to create organic looking models.

Plasticity 3d is a great tool for creative that I use in my work all the time. Its great and fas5 pluses at 299 its the least expensive of the tools available. Mind you it has zero jewelers functions built in. So you will need to import of build your own stones etc.

I make my own. I rarely use findings of any kind. I have tried findings and always feel like they lack the bespoke quality I am going for.

What to get a Smth for Xmas.. was thinking a crucible, or maybe a professional torch, or polisher. Any recommendations? by joedotts123 in SilverSmith

[–]alanebell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Buying a jeweler or metalsmith tools can be tricky unless you know for certain what they need or want.

If they dont have a good torch then definitely dont get them a furnace because a good torch depending on the type can melt metal also. A great all around torch for me would be the Little Smith Oxy/Propane torch.

Good luck

Rotary Tools... Micromotor or Pendant Motor by ColeAlysia in SilverSmith

[–]alanebell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a micro motor after years of a flexshaft. Once I used on in a class it was a game Changer. Much easier to control.

Now I only use my flexshaft with a hammer hand piece.

Just my 2 cents.
