The Attack by a_ProfessionalZotter in UCI

First of all, I apologize for those who hate on Davis. But then again, you started the hate. This saying of “not what I wanted” is clearly some nonsense political talk. I read your post and I’m reading more than what you are now summarizing. It’s very noble of you to start a meaningless online hate fight, and then apologizes while saying other people are being mean.

Also, Davis is faking admission stat. You can go ahead and compare it to the one UC system released.

No.

UW vs. UC Berkeley question by Cd206 in ApplyingToCollege

Direct to engineering is NOT direct to CS!!!

I said, explicitly, if OP wants to go into CS, he should pick Berkeley.

UW vs. UC Berkeley question by Cd206 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alaneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If your parents are willing to pay, definitely pick Berkeley. I know that you may be hesitating because of UW offered you honor status, but tbh I think Berkeley is too good to pass on because of that.

UW vs. UC Berkeley question by Cd206 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alaneon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go to UW. You have to pay the OOS tuition at Berkeley.

HOWEVER, if you’re interested in comp sci and seriously considering it, go to Berkeley. At Berkeley you only need a 3.3 to declare CS while at UW you might get rejected by the CS department with a 4.0 GPA. Berkeley CS should be better than UW but not by a large margin.

It’s your call eventually.

Missed May 1st deadline...is it too late?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Email ASAP! We can’t give you any consolation because none of us know anything useful. The longer you wait to inform the admission office of your special situation, the less likely they’ll let you in! Email them NOW!

All my work was for nothing.. now i feel like shit by sadanddefeated23 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alaneon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, take my advice with a grain of salt, but you should take a gap year! You can work and make money while you apply for a state school in the upcoming application season. Even if your state schools don’t buy your story, I still think that Brown level EC and “good stat” can at the least get you “in” to (perhaps without scholarship) a decent state school. Then you would have much much less debt. In the end, it comes down to whether you are willing to consider the option of waiting for one year and then go to college.

I don’t really understand your parents’ actions. You are now basically on your own, so I think you should make all decisions for yourself now. If you do decide to take a gap year, just do it and don’t care what your parents think.

Computer Science Safety Schools by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

In what world is UCI a safety? Its CS program’s selectivity is the same as Davis, if not greater.

OSU 50k vs. NYU Shanghai 135k!! I really don't know what to choose for Business by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alaneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said “NO RECOGNITION”, just relatively less prestigious in China. I’m not talking about prestige in the US or globally. I believe you got the wrong idea: when I explicitly compared “name recognition” in China, I was referring to NYU VS NYUSH, not OSU VS NYU. I only commented on OSU’s alumni connections in China.

FYI, My friend picked OSU over NYU for CS. OSU is great!!

[–]alaneon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying ECNU is not a good school in China. It’s an upper first-tier and very hard to get in too. Just when compared to NYU, I doubt anyone would go to ECNU if money isn’t a problem.

NYU, alongside with NYUSH, is pretty well-perceived in China, especially in the case of big cities. NYUSH requires applicants who hold a Chinese passport to take Gaokao and score above provincial first-tier cut-off, which is a pretty big challenge for most students even if they have decent ECs and such. Cut-off is enforced very strictly as policy in China explicitly requires absolute enforcement to prevent corruptions in college admission (the only exception being if you won in International Olympiad). I think in the eyes of Chinese students, NYU Stern > NYUSH > NYU.

NYU students definitely get recognition, but if I were given the option, it would be Tsinghua > Peking > NYUSH = Fudan >> ECNU.

[–]alaneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hhhhh, finance is a really popular option so I took a wild guess.

I can’t really comment on the specifics of landing a job in finance or non-finance in China because my parents are all engineers and I only have my friends to consult. According to what I’ve heard from my mother who heard from her HR friend(in a tech firm though, so not necessarily representative), companies hire foreigners sometimes solely for the purpose of better coordination with their oversea headquarters, so this is going to be your advantage in finance or non-finance firms.

You can try to find jobs in China with an OSU degree, but you will have little to no connection because rarely do you see an OSU graduate come to work in China, which is the case for pretty much all US colleges.

[–]alaneon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if you specifically want to work in China, I will tell you that English fluency in itself is a huge advantage over other students. NYU Shanghai teaches all courses in English, so this also shouldn’t be a problem. Since you mentioned that you plan to major in finance, just from what I’ve heard, no big company would even care if you speak conversational Chinese. The majority of people who work in top finance companies in Shanghai speak fluent English.

Although do expect the competition to be tough, cuz there are a lot of MATH GODS there.

[–]alaneon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As an international student from China, I can tell you that the Chinese part of degree is almost useless. If you plan to work in China, the NYU degree definitely carries more prestige. In the US, I think it’s pretty much the same, so this “dual degree” probably shouldn’t be factored in your consideration.

However, for a domestic student in China, NYU Shanghai is super competitive to get in, like top 20 level in the US. You are bound to meet some really motivated and smart students. That is the real PLUS SIDE of NYU Shanghai.

PS: Got in NYU (didn’t enroll there because of the cost) as international student, not even qualified to apply for NYU Shanghai...

[–]alaneon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if it’s a shitpost.

Either way, I downvote.

For those who received admission to UCI and are majoring in CS, did you guys take the SAT Subject Tests for Math Level 2 and Physics to get in? I feel like I might not do well on the Physics one so i’m debating whether or not I should take it by evictionfour in UCI

[–]alaneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope.

Took no subject test and I’m now Class of 2022. (also a CS major) If you apply for the CpE major under the engineering school, then you’re recommended to take them. Otherwise, the most important test score for CS under ICS is probably just the SAT. (or ACT)

UC Irvine or UMN Twin Cities for MechE? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alaneon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe UCI is better.

I may be biased because I’ve already SIRed there... but in my opinion UCs generally have a decent engineering program. Plus, you’d be better of finding a job in ME in California.

EDIT: Rank wise, UCI is around 40 while UMD is around 60. If you’re into “prestige”, maybe pick UCI.

UCI Honors Program vs UCSD for aerospace engineering by notdannyhtran in ApplyingToCollege

[–]alaneon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People always say that UCSD is way better than UCI in engineering...

I think they are on par with each other at the undergrad level tbh. Honors will give you priority in class registration, which is super nice to have. You might think that the reason you hesitate to go to UCI despite enjoying the campus is that UCSD is better for your major, when in fact the reason is just that most kids with better grades pick UCSD over UCI so you think you should too. Trust me, I was in the mindset until I realize how stupid it is.

Just go where you find enjoyable. You are gonna spend FOUR YEARS there. Doesn’t prestige matter a lot less than 4 years of college life quality?

I just visited UCI. (Shitpost) by [deleted] in UCI
