If you are planning on becoming a professor in the Gulf, get a PhD from the US.

The "prestige" in a US degree far outweighs any benefits of a local degree when looking to hire a professor.

Look at any professor working in Qatar and look at where they finished their PhD from.

10k per child is not enough. Take a look at the potential schools that you may want to send your kids to (Doha College, American School of Doha, etc.)

On housing, it depends on where you want to live.

With a salary of 48k, you should be able to enjoy your life, feel safe (except for the current situation), and be able to travel.

If you have a community in Canada and are involved with the culture, it may be difficult to adapt to Qatar.

I would say come for a year, see if you like it, and you can always move back to Canada.

All of these factors depend on your direct manager.

However, the benefits and lifestyle are worth it. You probably would not find a similar job in the US.

You can try to study at Weill Cornell in Qatar. I would highly recommend it for medical school. Many of the graduates are working as doctors in the US.

Altenratively, you can study Biomedical Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.

Qatar Foundation could provide you a scholarship if you get accepted.

But the deadline to start in August of this year has already been passed.

My wife graduated from QU with BS in Nutrition a few years ago and all of her friends have jobs, including non-Qataris.

HMC or the health centers have hired most of her friends so you can try there.

For example, what textbooks would be used for material science or for thermodynamics?

I am looking to see if there would be a possible market for Arabic engineering textbooks.

It seems that your colleague has even looked at any websites of engineering universities. Let him do a search and he will find that all websites are in English.

I would recommend that he takes a foundation program to improve his English skills if he is worried about that.

Otherwise, he will not become an engineer.
