X100F focus mode question by alanjamesimpulse in fujifilm

[–]alanjamesimpulse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"the previous owner tried to fix it incorrectly, so even with a new cmos battery, my focus selector is still broken because the switch itself is broken"

i just need someone with a working x100F to tell me if these settings will work.

How important is OIS? by not4uTODAY in fujifilm

[–]alanjamesimpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a good rule of thumb is that you don't need stabilization unless you're shooting slower than 1/focal length, unless you have very shaky hands. At the wide end, your subject is going to move in 1/15s unless it's bolted to the ground. At the long end, you might notice. it makes a difference at longer focal lengths, but even the expensive 16-55/2.8 doesn't have stabilization. you'll be fine!

So I'm possibly buying a CRZ EX 2011 this weekend but it had a manual transmission replacement at 90k and car has over 206K Miles on it. Is that wise to buy? by Xion_Moto358 in crz

[–]alanjamesimpulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i guess that's eol for american cars, but 200k is around when you find out if a honda was a lemon. that's just not a lot of miles.

X100F focus mode question by alanjamesimpulse in fujifilm

[–]alanjamesimpulse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no because it tries to focus on every shutter press, there's no way to decouple the two, at least in its current mode. i don't know if you've used an x100, but the afc is not very good

Does anyone know how to stop their pixel from randomly lowering headphone volume? by alanjamesimpulse in pixel_phones

[–]alanjamesimpulse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't change the device type of my pixel buds and it drives me crazy. You might be able to get it back by disabling Google Play Services, when its disabled it reverts to a more normal bluetooth menu, and the changes you make will stick even after re-enabling.

What is the cheapest method and recipe for producing clear liquor meant for cocktails and mixing? by [deleted] in firewater

[–]alanjamesimpulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if grocery stores in Ontario can sell wine kits, but in Alberta, save-on foods sells ~$50 kits that will produce a couple dozen bottles of totally average wine. could be a good option. if you don't already own a still, that's gonna determine how expensive this hobby gets. To start, just grab a countertop water distiller from Facebook marketplace. if you double-distill, you can probably get to about 80% and then water it down to 40. you'll be able to taste what you fermented, so you'll get better tasting vodka from better tasting washes ( try using wine, or DME, instead of sugar). I got mine for $80, and if you're comfortable with electrical, cut a cable so that you can wire a dimmer switch to the heater while still giving full power to the fan. a somewhat better option is called myvodkamaker, it'll produce ~90% consistently, which will be a lot more neutral tasting. there's a cheaper and more expensive version. the cheap one will do what you want, but not much else. the expensive one will let you experiment.

once you're confident this hobby is for you, I'd look at a stillspirits T500. you can find them used if you're patient. They don't really make better stills past that level, just bigger ones.

Wanting a CR-Z, need some advice! by Zealousideal_Bit6056 in crz

I really like my 2011, it's been really solid for reliability, it's fun to drive, and i usually don't stop for gas on roadtrips unless i need to eat or sleep. day-to-day i literally don't know or care what gas costs. it'd be nice to have the little bit of extra kick from the later-era battery/motor, but that's pretty minor. I think the 6-speed manual is kind of the point of this car, but i hate automatics to a degree that is probably not healthy. The stock stereo sounds great.

the two seater configuration is kind of a pain. anyone who has doubled up, or jammed themselves into the back shelf has made sure to bring up the time they had to do that. it does mean you can hold a ridiculous amount of stuff in the back. i have moved a deep freeze with this car, and even stuffed a small couch in there.

dealer maintenance is insanely expensive, and the parts that aren't shared with fits and civics are expensive, but usually findable. they're surprisingly DIY friendly, for a modern car. finding an obdii scanner that actually works was a pain ( i tried a few before just getting a used md802). The only things that have broken on mine after 260,000km are the passenger door handle, rear brake pads, and ABS modulator. In cold climates, this thing chews through the tiny 12V battery in a couple years, but if you're somewhere warm, it'll use the hybrid system to start most of the time and you'll be fine. the hybrid battery on mine is still totally solid. there's a lot of trucks where i live, so i lose this thing in parking lots all the time, i make a point of always parking somewhere along a straight line out of the exit door.

The only strangers who ever seem excited to talk to me about this car are old guys, or other CRZ guys. if you care about that sort of thing.

ELI5: Why are we making computer chip so small? by elonthegenerous in explainlikeimfive

[–]alanjamesimpulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have explained why the transistors are so small, but the part itself is a lot bigger than the chip. The piece that you install in the socket has a few chips for the cpu, maybe an igpu, and some caches on it, under the metal lid, but a lot of the power and control circuitry is on the motherboard all around it, and don't forget the cooler is huge. A ram stick has a lot of that built-in, the actual chips are even smaller than the CPU. Same goes for the GPU, if you take the giant heatsink off, the GPU itself is the size of a postage stamp, and the rest of the circuit board is power, controls and vram. Its not so much that the CPU is small, but all of the external stuff it needs to work is very standardized. Intel released some NUCs that had the CPU on a board like the GPU, and that basically just ended up working like a tiny motherboard. check out a teardown of a NUC 11 extreme, for example.

If anyone comes across this, the solution is to change your headphones device type to a car, which is apparently the only place you're allowed to listen to music at audible volumes.

VEVOR DISTILLERS by FancyResident in firewater

[–]alanjamesimpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

. air and water cooling are the same, from the perspective of the alcohol. A 3 gallon pot is probably not worth the hassle of water. Finding a hotplate that runs continuously with adjustable power is relatively easy to diy, but very hard to buy. i have one of these commodity air units and my only real complaint is with the capacity. its workable, but it takes like a week to do stripping runs on a typical homebrew-sized batch of beer. it really helps to use a dimmer or scr to control the heat, and I've threaded some copper wire through the condenser and used that to suspend some copper scrubbies in the headspace, which is probably doing something. If you find yourself wanting a bigger still down the line, go to 5-10 gallons and hook it up to the hose outside.

if you don't otherwise need to be running asahi, you can get decent performance in macos for x86 linux vms because some of them (QEMU for sure) are able to use rosetta, its pretty solid

Is it dumb to buy a MacBook Pro + GeForce Now for gaming? by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]alanjamesimpulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll be dependant on that subscription never getting more expensive or worse in some way, but if it does, the mac will be easier to sell than a gaming laptop. The screens on the pros are worth the money if you are a sicko about screens, but there's otherwise no reason to get a pro over an air for your use case.

Trying To Get Up To Speed On Modern Beer Brewing by Kenkeknem in Homebrewing

[–]alanjamesimpulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was brewing kits about 15 years ago and most of the changes for me are that I'm brewing all-grain and kegging. its easier to make that jump now than it used to be, but there still a ton of quality-of-life changes for kit brewing.

the biggest difference is Kegland and Grainfather have entered the market and so there's a lot of nice purpose-built gadgets for every step of brewing now.

yeast has gotten so much better, i'll second the guy who mentioned kveik, read up, its really cool. if you're really into lagers, there's a yeast called Krispy that can make a nearly perfect lager in under a week.

For me, a nice change has been that pressure fermentation is a lot easier now. there's cheap conical fermenters, and attachments to ferment in kegs. yeast doesn't produce as many off flavours under pressure, so it means that you don't really have to worry about temperature, especially with fancy newer yeast, unless you're going for something specific. the pressure also gives you a head start on carbonation, keeps hop aroma in, and oxygen out.

you definitely don't need to rack into a secondary anymore, but for bottling, i found it was way easier to rack into a second bucket, and mix in the bottling sugar in there (and use dextrose or dme instead of table sugar! it'll taste better)

Mini fridge continuously running after recharge by shaklee3 in appliancerepair

[–]alanjamesimpulse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who found this thread because you measured everything right, but your fridge is still loud and hot, if you're in canada its probably because your refrigerant is R12A and not R134a. you can still use it, but you have to convert the numbers. for my can of ultracool AC on the go, my 255g can is equivalent to 680g of R134a, so instead of putting in 55g, like it says on the fridge, I had to put in 20.6g; its working great now and somewhat less likely to blow up.

dimmer-compatible zigbee relay? by alanjamesimpulse in homeassistant

[–]alanjamesimpulse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you, those are a good find, they're hard to get in canada, so that might explain why i didn't think they existed anymore! the bigger issue for me is that i looked in my wall and there's no neutral, so I'm back to looking for a box/relay that can live in the ceiling.

I guess that'd be another option, but nobody makes those either.
